Rate this book

The Holy Quran for Educating the Child transforms the Quran into a modern and useful educational tool for parents and teachers, and thereby renders the beneficial power of the Quran widely accessible.

The Holy Quran for Educating the Child interweaves the Quran, in unprecedented fashion, with modern educational approach, thereby helping the Islamic world and the West to better understand each other.

The Holy Quran for Educating the Child celebrates and reveals the beauty of the Quran and its respect for human dignity. Thus, it both refutes various prejudices against Islam, and provides a resounding response to warped exploitation of the Quran for the justification of terror.

Respect for human dignity

Israeli author Ofer Grosbard is a clinical psychologist, having earned his degree in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University. He lectures at Tel Aviv and Haifa universities and the Arab Academic College for Education. His writing skills have been shared in both books and academic articles.

If ever there were a propitious time for this book explaining the Quran and Muslim teachings it is now. The globe is fraught with misunderstanding of peoples and their religious beliefs and the persistent ‘terrorist’ actions represent this problem of a lack of understanding between Muslims, Jews, and Christians. Dr. Ofer Grosbard brings light to this darkness in this excellent book offering explanations of the teachings of the Quran in a manner apropos of his field of expertise – psychology – linking modern science with the Quran and Islamic culture. This English translation by Chaya Galai helps make this fine book accessible to an even broader audience.

The book is divided into sections that address the teachings of the Quran in a manner that is appropriate between teacher and student – Loss, Illness and Tragedy (e.g., is loss an excuse for aggression?), Husbands and Wives (How should one treat one’s husband or wife? etc), Adolescent Girls (How should one treat a girl who dresses in unacceptably immodest fashion? etc), Dishonest Conduct (Is it always possible to repent? etc), The Parent as a Model (Is the authority figure all-knowing? etc), On Flattery, Boastfulness and Other Negative Qualities (How should on accept success and failure? etc) Truth, Promises and Personal Responsibilities (Do keeping promises enhance one’s self esteem? etc), Patience, Humility and the Need to Acknowledge Limitations (Is explanation preferable to punishment? etc), Forgiveness and Absolution (What can we do about anger? etc), Delinquency and Violence (How can we make peace between quarreling children? etc), Human Relations (How should we treat other people? etc), There is Always Hope (Does God want us to be strong? etc), and Democracy and Society (How can we foster a democratic approach to others? etc).

Reading this list of issues approached in this valuable book only touches on the impact Ofer brings to our attention. For each thought presented an example is given followed by an explanation with quotations from the Quran and in the words of a psychologist. This technique works very well and by the end of this book we realize we have explored many concepts once thought to be contradictory to possible current views. This is an erudite and very important book as written by a humanist who cares about human dignity. Highly Recommended.

I enjoyed this book and think there are a lot of good lessons and messages conveyed here. There are a lot of things going on in the world right now that are hard to explain to children and young adults, and this book broaches many of those topics.

Whilst not everything in this book relates directly to children, at least not what might be considered younger children still relying on a parent for education about life matters, the majority of the book is highly readable even for someone with little to no experience of the Quran sand for younger audiences.

I think books like this are valuable, because they cross the cultural lines and teach people about the beliefs of others, thereby helping to break through the walls of stereotypes that have built up. This book allows you to see first hand that there are a lot of good lessons in the Holy Quran that can be applied to daily life, regardless of your personal secular or religious belief system. I support the efforts of the author and hope he will continue writing.
