I figured since I use Jaeger's method in my thesis I ought to finally read the entire book cover to cover. So I did and I have to say: I am still convinced of the concept and its usefulness but there are a number of passages which made me want to scream "Edit, people! We've read this before.". Also the need to quote entire pages of Foucault is debatle, in my opinion. Since I'm not a novice to the topic of power and discourse etc. I was quite releaved to finally get to the "hands on part" which only starts on page 76. But I guess a big part of the forerun is necessary when addressing beginners. Yet I doubt that anyone without a basic knowledge of Foucault et. al. will be able to comprehend the scope of discourse analysis.
Still, it's a very useful book and judging from my experience it might even pay off to reread it after a couple of years or some more years into your studies. Familiarity with concepts like hegemony, power and knowledge, postcolonialism (when applying to so-called developing countries' topics), orientalism etc. - the relevant left-wing theories of the last decades - will be a definite asset while reading.
