This book is the third in the Grandma Dangerous series. It has humour, is fast-paced and has great pictures.
The story follows Ollie whose Grandma Florence is an explorer. "She’s always up to something. Mum calls her Grandma Dangerous." Except this time Ollie is forced to stay with his other Grandma Beatrix – “I call her Grandma Boring” – when his parents go on holiday. Luckily Grandma Dangerous rescues him, his friend Piper and his cousin Thomas, and takes them on a crazy adventure in Egypt. The adventure involved Ollie “crash landing in the ocean, riding a camel, walking over crocodiles and crawling through a DARK, scarab-infested tunnel to rescue his Gran’s dog.” Gran’s dog, a rare Egyptian Choodle, is believed to be the long-lost pet of King Tutti-Frutti. The legend says “he must roam the earth until reunited with his master” and upon his return all King Tutti-Frutti’s descendants would have a curse removed that makes their little toes super long which makes it difficult for them to buy shoes.
Grandma Dangerous is constantly telling little white lies to disguise her true intentions and she lives up to her name putting them all into lots of dangerous situations. She is also perhaps a bit gullible in this book as you can see what is happening a mile off whereas she seems to be oblivious to what others might be plotting for her dog. Overall the book is a humour book with a fast pace. The illustrations along the way are also well done. With two other Grandma Dangerous books out there (at time of writing), she is not slowing down any time soon.
A wonderfully funny and silly book that middle grade readers will love! The fast-paced plot and outrageous characters will have readers hooked and laughing out loud.
I personally thought this wasn't quite as good as Grandma Dangerous and the Egg of Glory, but it's still a fantastic book that will appeal to many readers, including reluctant readers and boys.
This series is a family favorite. My grandchildren have added Grandma Dangerous to my nicknames and I wear it as a badge of honor. The books are a great way to introduce American children to British language differences .
