The book Higher English Grammar and Composition is based on Modern English Grammar which has its base in descriptive linguistics and describes the structure/system of English language under Sound System, Word System, Syntax, and Punctuation; different from the traditional method of studying grammar which is based on Orthography, Etymology, Syntax, Punctuation, Rhetoric and Prosody.

The book has been divided into two parts. In the first part, all the rules of English grammar have been discussed. It also lays emphasis on vocabulary and use of English language. Reading comprehension, precis, and essay writing have been included in the book.

The book has been written for students and teachers of English. It will be useful for all those who are interested in English language and want to master it.

M.P. Sinha was Professor and Head, Department of English, CSJM University Kanpur from 1988 to 2002. His published books include, W.B. Yeats: His Poetry and Politics; Methods of Research in English; Modern Linguistics; and Advanced Learner's Grammar and Composition.

A.K. Awasthi, M.A., L.L.B., Ph.D., was Professor and Head, Department of English, H.S. Gour University, Sagar (MP).
