CyberFrog (2019) #2

CYBERFROG: REKT PLANET

Rate this book
The next chapter of the CYBERFROG saga, the biggest crowdfunded comic of all time.

It's 2018, twenty years after the VYZPZZ invasion. CYBERFROG has reunited with his friend HEATHER SWAIN, who is surviving in the New Jersey Pine Barrens with her ten year old daughter LILY and others.

They live by these four rules:

1. STAY IN THE TREES: The Vyzpzz have demonstrated that they have trouble maneuvering in the forest.

2. STAY NEAR THE SMOKE: Survivors keep bonfires going constantly. The Vyzpzz are repelled by smoke and fire.

3. STAY CALM: The Vyzpzz are intoxicated by panic and fear.

4. ALWAYS WEAR RED: The Vyzpzz can't see the color red. Wearing red cloaks makes you invisible to them.

The survivors believe that they are safely hidden, and have been living in relative safety for years. But the return of CYBERFROG brings trouble. Big trouble.

Van Sciver first caught the comic world's eye with his irreverent indie title CYBERFROG and stints on NEW X-MEN and THE FLASH: IRON HEIGHTS, but it was the landmark GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH mini-series with writer Geoff Johns that put him permanently at the top of fans' list.

No longer working for DC, in 2018 Van Sciver announced that he would instead produce his own comics, beginning with a crowdfunded comic entitled CYBERFROG: BLOODHONEY featuring his early character CyberFrog, for which he raised over $1,000,000 on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo.

Cyberfrog: Rekt Planet Is one of the BEST drawn comic books I have encountered. Between Ethan Van Sciver's art and Kyle Riter's colors, the internal page art is comparable to cover art. Cyberfrog is a complex character to draw due to his multiple reflexive surfaces. Van Sciver meticulously drew the reflected environment off of these surfaces as realistically as looking into a mirror. The detail is unbelievable. Not only can you observe the emotions and actions of the focused characters, but you can also infer the off-camera situation around them by studying the reflections. You can't just read the story, you need to also inspect the art.

Additionally, character's facial expressions realistically reflect emotion. Showing emotion is easy in movies, but in static art, it poses some challenges. We are tuned to catch the subtle changes in facial expression that defines emotion. Yet it is difficult to capture that in comic book art. Maybe it's the time pressure to complete, or maybe it's just a skill issue. But with Rekt Planet, and through the means of independent Crowdfunding, Van Sciver took the time and care to invest into drawing very realistic emotions.

This leads me to the Elephant in the room: Lateness. This project took three years to complete. I backed it on March 2020 and received it on Feb 2023. But not from negligence or laziness. But rather Obsessive Compulsion and Perfectionism. It was worth the wait it because the promised 48 pages of story had increased to over 64 pages (I believe it was closer to 70) and the quality of the art improved! ( take a moment to review the campaing updates, which includes fully colored sample story pages and images of the various covers - https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/et...)

What about the story? I enjoyed it immensely. BloodHoney (The first installment of Cyberfrog) I felt was a bit drawn out, a bit slower in pace (but that happens when you need to set up the universe). However, Rekt Planet had more diverse scenes on character building and interaction, more action scenes and a great revelation at the end. I truly enjoyed learning more about Heather Swain and her role in the community, her Daughter, Lilly, and her realistic child reaction to new situations, and the dynamics of the community they survived with. And i enjoyed seeing how Cyberfrog dealt with the handicap of not being fully enabled with his capabilities. It felt Empire-Strikes-Back-ish (and no.. the Vzzpyzz are not Cyberforg's father.)

In conclusion, Rekt Planet deserves my 5 stars because of the Excellent, art and story. Ethan Van Sciver has an extensive imagination, great drawing skill, awesome story telling ability, and I eagerly await the next Chapter: Cyberfrog: Red Extermination. I am expecting continued quality in art and coloring and for the story to take great and unexpected turns.

This is the second book from the main current Cyberfrog story. This is essentially a modern revisit of a character that Ethan Van Sciver created at the beginning of his career as a comic book artist.

The artwork is fantastic. One of the most well drawn comics ever produced. The colouring is also out of this world. The visuals are ten out of ten, faultless.

The story involves a Cybernetic frog awakening from a few decades of slumber to find the earth overrun by killer wasps. Cyberfrog is powered down due to being taken offline and he reunited with lifelong friend Heather Swain who now has to a child.

My major gripe is the thrust of the comic is focussed on what feels like should be a subplot. One hero going up against insurmountable odds is a brilliant conflict. However much of the story focusses on the human survivors and them laying low. The feeling I get is similar to what I experienced with the Matrix sequels. All out war is substituted with smaller conflicts and lesser plot threads. And there is an antagonist character we are told nothing about that enters the fray.

Ethan Van Sciver is a veteran comic artist and not a writer, and it does show. By no means is it awful or clunky, it is very sincere. I don’t think the main plot being developed as well as it could be and I was left frustrated that there was no huge action payoff. I feel I need a better story reason why Cyberfrog isn’t kicking ass and taking names for a huge chunk of the book.

I liked it but the story, I think, needed a reshuffle for it to be truly great.

Another triumph from Ethan Van Sciver! This is what comics should be and if the Big Two put out stories like this instead of woke propaganda, the US comic industry wouldn't be getting its a** handed to them by manga. Ethan knows what ACTUAL comic fans want: good story, great art and no preaching! No activism! Because he's an actual artist, not an activist. Activists have zero creativity, that's why everything they make is a self insert. Follow his projects on Indiegogo or buy directly off of eBay, you won't be disappointed. If my review sounds biased, it's because his work EARNED my loyalty by being GOOD.

I thought it was an incredible book. Way better than Bloodhoney. There are call-backs to the first book. But Ethan said that the 3rd and 4th book is where the important action will take place. These were to establish the setting and threat.

The art is next level, detail, made with care. It's a thing of beauty, fun, colorful.. the story is still not as good as it could be. It gets lost in the weeds a bit half way through but the art overcompensates for it.

Ok....THIS is a good example of being run by pure hype. The art was amazing I'll admit BUT with all the bragging and all the drama, this definitely doesn't live up to what Ethan SAID it was. He should spend less time attacking other people and more time working on himself....and yeah word does go around.

Good story. More villains. More fleshing out of the world. Van Sciver’s art is amazing. Very, very detailed, but also incredibly busy. Sometimes I think it distracts from the story and makes it hard to tell what is going on. But still a quality read!

Awesome follow up to Blood Honey, it’s actually 73 pages not 48 as stated here in details.

Worth the wait, and blew bloodhoney away in stakes and quality (which was already very high!) Beyond excited to see what comes next.

It is an improvement from the first one, HOWEVER it's still not what I was expecting or wanting. Hopefully #3 ends up getting better. It's nice to see Cyberfrog accepted by the people 'kind of' but it was still not exciting enough of a story for me.

Honestly I thought it would be better than the first one, it kind of was but it kind of wasn't. Hopefully the 3 rd one is better
