Ayla is a villain. With a gift that allows her to see when anyone will die, she’s remorseless in her profession as the perfect assassin. When she wakes up in a cryo-tank three thousand years in the future, and no idea how she came to be there, all that matters is survival.
Rescued by Leith and the crew of the Nuria, Ayla discovers a far evolved world of space ships and galactic colonization. But everything comes with a price, and though Ayla is no princess locked in an icy tower, she still has to pay for the rescue she didn’t know she needed.
Given over to Leith, a darkly handsome man who reads Ayla far easier than she’d like, they must work together if Ayla is to repay her debt. As the pair come to learn how dangerous one another are, so too grows a lustful bond that comes with rules of its own. Fighting to learn why she was frozen, Ayla’s dragged into Leith’s past with a criminal organization seeking to take over this sector of the galaxy. In order to survive, Leith will need Ayla’s help, but Ayla doesn’t know if she’s willing to pay what it will cost her…
Beginning a writing journey with an epic 21 book series, Ejay started her author career in 2014 and has taken on the ups and downs of self-publishing with her fantasy series The Last Prophecy since 2016. At the start of 2019, she put the series on the backburner to write Behind the Veil in 25 days, and signed a publishing contract for the gothic noir novel to independent publisher Literary Wanderlust. She resumed self-publishing a scifi series, Queen of Spades released across 2020 and 2021, as well as signing another contract with Literary Wanderlust for NA fantasy, Echo of the Evercry. Believing in more than one path to a career in publishing, Ejay pursues self-publishing alongside querying traditional publishers with multiple manuscripts.
If you ever watched Firefly or even the much older Blake 7 then you will be aware of the joy that a ragtag crew aboard a spaceship can bring. This book about an unusual woman woken from cryogenic sleep three thousand years after her last memory has just that sort of feel to it with outlaws, villains, political unrest, vengeance and betrayal all thrown in. This is no insipid, feeble heroine though as Ayla is a trained assassin who right from the start proves she can protect herself. Rescued by Leith and his fellow crewmembers Ayla quickly adapts to this new world but she's no passive miss to be underestimated. Capable of what to me was a wholly unique concept of knowing someone's ' death day ' Ayla struggles to remember what happened to her but quickly begins to form relationships with her fellow crewmembers. Leith is her love interest but I particularly enjoyed reading about Casey ( a true revelation ) and Kabe who was an absolute sweetheart. I really enjoyed reading this book by a new to me author and although it's sci fi it wasn't full of gobbledygook and instead concentrated on the characters and the dangerous situations they faced. This book has definitely got me interested in reading the follow-up as secrets about Ayla are clearly about to be revealed. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Ayla is a villain. With a gift that allows her to see when anyone will die, she’s remorseless in her profession as the perfect assassin. I enjoyed reading it.
Dawson has created a delicious villain in Ayla. Awakened after three thousand years, this ruthless woman handles whatever comes her way - soaking up spaceships, interstellar travel, politics, corporate criminals, intrigue, and a fabulous new array of weaponry for her assassin's skills. But it's not all straight up for Ayla, though there is a stack of fast-paced action. The author takes Ayla through a roller-coaster ride of emotion, recovery, betrayal, and discovery that keeps you turning the page to see what she has to handle next. The prose is sharp, spare and clear. The action is snappy and the characters develop well over the book. The author sneaks in a few small pauses to let us catch our breath, painting in the future world and its people and culture, then we're off again. Ayla's gift comes with its thorns and the multiple story lines have us following twists and turns as Ayla's rescuers get into a stack of trouble of their own. The author pushes Ayla's buttons as she explores her new team relationships and regains her sense of adventure after her long hibernation. Add in some mystical and emotional connection to the supernatural nature of her gift and you have a wonderful sci-fi action romance. And, the science and technology are beautifully drawn for my liking, a lovely balance of the possible and the probable matched with an imagination that has captured the future world-building so well. The ending is only frustrating because the sequel is not yet published. I was delighted to receive an ARC of Queen of Spades and thoroughly enjoyed the read. Well worth your time.
Thanks to Netgalley and the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love going into books blind, so I didn't really read the synopsis. I was so shocked by the first chapter and I think I read this book pretty quick! I was also surprised by the romance and the smut (you know I love it). Definitely a quick and easy to read book. So if you're looking for a nice sci-fi adventure with some romance; pick this up!
Definitely a great book for people who are character driven, but also for people who are plot driven, because SO much is happening. The characters and their relationships were definitely my favorite part. Ayla is so badass and I'm just really curious to see what she is going to do next!
I loved Awakening and am excited for the next book in the series. Dawson hit the right mix of romance and sci-fi action and created a ragtag spaceship crew I'm rooting for with all my heart. Occasionally I found myself lost in some of the details of about the technology of the future, though Ayla seemed to catch on very quickly. At times the world Dawson created felt too similar to our own—maybe 300 years in the future, not 3,000.
After finishing the book, I felt that the prologue was unnecessary—it could have been a flashback later in story, and it introduced too many characters we didn't hear from again. I would have preferred to have started the book at the same time Ayla started her new life. I think the author was trying too hard to avoid the trope of starting a book with the character waking up, but the filler before Ayla's awakening was confusing and could turn off some readers. If readers are tempted to DNF, I would encourage them to read the first two chapters to get a feel for the writing and the world Dawson creates.
I wasn't too sure how I would like this book .. but it turned out to be really good. The relationship between the two characters was on point. The story was well written and will keep you intrigued throughout the entire read.
Library recommendation: Recommended for public library science fiction romance collections and/or science fiction collections.
Warning: Hereafter, you chance spoilers. I will try never to reveal major plot points, but to review any book, you must reveal some parts of the story.
_____________
Number of titles I have read by this author: 1
Love story speed: I guess you could call this a medium burn. This is the first book in a trilogy that appears to feature the same H/h throughout.
Relationship dynamics: The Space Crew Tactician (H) / The Out-of-Time Assassin (h)
Physical descriptions: Ayla is olive-skinned, with brown eyes, short, dark hair, pouting lips and a sharp jawline. Her height is really only addressed in relation to other characters (e.g. “[Leith] towered over her”). Leith is described alternately as having a dark brown skin tone and having an amber skin tone. He has dark, deep-set eyes, a broad chest, shaven head, silver tattoos, and is generally described as “chiseled.”
Sexual content: Some; on-page and explicit.
Triggers: child death; violent death; unapologetic murder by h
Grammar/Editing: There was a significant need for editing in the copy I read in terms of awkward sentences, typos, comma splices, etc. I requested this book on Net Galley as an ARC, but found that, in the front matter, it was listed as already published. Thus, I am unclear whether the copy I read was the final, published version, or an ARC. For rating purposes, I am assuming the latter. If the former, my rating would be reduced to 3.5 for content and clarity issues.
Review: This novel is set primarily on-spaceship and on-space station, 3 millennia in the future. The worldbuilding is pretty good for the casual sci fi reader – it won’t give you a headache trying to remember all of the details like some heavier sci fi can. The pacing is somewhat inconsistent, being slower paced in the middle of the story, but this isn’t an impediment to enjoyment of the book, overall.
The main characters are Leith and Ayla. Although she’s an assassin, Leith accepts Ayla as she is, which is one of his many attractions. While their relationship starts with some animosity, respect builds, and then chemistry follows. I wouldn’t say that their relationship is at the HEA stage by the end of the book – it is definitely still developing and will evolve in the next installment in the trilogy. Casey and Cabe are the primary supporting characters and they are very likeable. They have their own individual mysteries and I can tell that we will see more development of these characters in the subsequent books. Other characters are also well described, at least physically. I did have some lingering questions after reading but, while I wouldn’t call the ending a “cliffhanger,” I was driven to immediately purchase book two (which is currently available) to continue with the story.
Full disclosure: I received a free advance review copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Ayla Queen is my hero (well, heroine). She's like a mashup of all my favourite female protagonists (Buffy, Xena, Captain Marvel). She will literally end you in a blink of an eye. I love it. And no hesitation! It's so refreshing to find a heroine who shoots first then asks questions later! And to have such a unique ability of not only knowing a person's death date but altering it? You better believe this chick is a futuristic grim reaper. But to be fair if I'd woken up from a 3 thousand year old sleep, missed the world go by, found my body altered, my life stolen from me AND no memory of who put me in that sleep to begin with, I'D shoot first then ask questions later. Ayla is rage. And Leith Develan? Gorgeous, level-headed, powerful alpha Leith is the only one who can make our dear Ayla sheath that blade of hers. It's an incredibly beautiful relationship that forms between them and aside from the fact I was screaming at them to give into their emotions from the moment they clamped eyes on each other (hate or no hate that may or may not have clearly been between them at the time), it was SO WORTH THE WAIT.
The side characters, Kabe and Casey truly give me life. The banter is everything! (Casey is my spirit animal!) And god I just need her and Kabe to be together already!
E. J. Dawson has created a fantastically vivid world with wonderfully addictive characters. Ayla's anger is palpable, she's unhinged and from a completely different time to Leith, Kabe and Casey so I enjoy the way EJ reminds us of that by throwing in Ayla's experience with guns and other pop culture references which had me chuckling and "awwwing" at Leith/Casey/Kane's reactions. And I just want to put it out there that Leith helping Ayla understand the future and the new world is so frickin' SWOONSOME.
I don't keep this a secret but I love a hero who can handle a tough heroine. Leith's consideration and patience with Ayla was commendable. To the point where I could no longer stand the angst any longer. I adore slow burn romances and theirs was executed perfectly. I may or may not have expressed my impatience to the author but that's neither here nor there.
For ages I've wanted to delve into a rich, new sci-fi romance story and it was fate I came across Awakening: Queen of Spades' upcoming release. And I got more than I bargained for. From the get go I knew I would enjoy this book. I knew I'd immediately be in Ayla's corner, knew I'd ship her and Leith, see Kabe and Casey as a married couple (loool) and dive headfirst into a sci-fi fantasy adventure with all four of them. In short, I'm very impressed with EJ's debut. I loved it. I loved it. I loved it. I'm DYING for book 2. I read it too fast and now I'm suffering from withdrawal symptoms!
I'm down for the journey now. Officially buckled in and ready for more adventure, please and thank you, EJ!
Ayla has been asleep for a long time, three thousand years in fact. Trained as an assassin because of a gift that allows her to see a person's death date, Ayla was a military weapon many were happy to utilize. When she suddenly is awakened from cryogenic storage, Ayla falls right into a fighting fray with the team who found her.
Leith and the crew of the spaceship Nuria rescue Ayla taking her with them on a mission. She has so much to learn and little time to do it. Ayla wants to work in order to repay her debt; her memories are spotty so finding out why she was frozen is essential. Ayla's talent is a blessing and a curse since looking a person in the face and knowing when death waits is quite a burden though useful for enemies as she can influence that date. She has learned to mostly keep that information to herself. Her world has taken quite a paradigm shift so she is constantly trying to catch up on this whole new world in space.
While she and Leith work together against the Nuria's foes and Leith's enemies from his past, they develop a strong attachment. This story has quite a bit of action and adventure with a sidecar of romance. It does more or less end in a cliffhanger so if you are not a fan of those, wait for the next book.
Before I begin my review for Awakening: Queen of Shades book 1 by E.J Dawson, I would personally like to thank the author and Netgalley the opportunity to read this ARC and I have reviewed it honestly.
Meet Ayla, a kick-ass assassin, and join her in a futuristic, science fiction space saga as she awakens from a 3000 year cryosleep. With no idea how she came to be put asleep, Ayla must come to terms with her new reality whilst navigating her unquenchable blood-lust and unsettling ability to read a person's death day. Enjoy a fast paced, magnetic and lustful tale with attractive characters and lots of bad-ass-ary.
Awakening features, but is not limited to, the following themes: ○ New adult ○ Science fiction ○ Cryosleep ○ Space travel ○ Assassin ○ Kick-ass female herione ○ Mental ability ○ Slow burn romance
My overall rating for Awakening is...
5 stars!
I'm not a huge sci fi fan but the word assassin got my attention. I'm so glad it did. This story was incredible! The world building, characters, futuristic technology and mix of themes were utterly unique, exciting and tantalising. Add an assassin and a slow burn romance you've got an impressive book. There was also one steamy scene that got the blood boiling, and what's more satisfying then that?
Ayla is one of the most intriguing main characters I've seen in the young adult genre in years! Without giving away any spoilers, she is cunning, brave, resourceful, and does what she needs in order to survive a...unthinkable situation. The authenticity of her character, and those of Leith and Casey in particular, is so seamlessly integrated into a futuristic world that it doesn't seem like a made up world at all.
Dawson's pacing is on point, which helps the vivid characters and "you'll never figure it out" plot twists flow smoothly. I found myself wanting to pause and take it all in, but also needing to keep reading to find out how the characters got themselves out of yet another spot of trouble. Unlike similar books in the genre I've read, the story twists don't appear abrupt or forced--Dawson plants clues and explains details just right so that the story unfolds naturally.
If you like kick-ass characters and a bit of mystery, you can't miss this one!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book for an honest review.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was very excited to receive this book. I liked that it was about space and written in the villain’s POV? Color me curious! Ayla is a likeable enough character. She’s a total badass and super independent. I like how she had to get out of her comfort zone and form relationships with those around her even though she’s never really relied on anyone but herself. But to be totally honest, this book kind of fell flat for me. I felt like the characters were underdeveloped and that made it difficult for me to connect with them. I mean, Ayla had been locked away for thousands and thousands of years and when she’s finally freed, she just rolls with the punches and gets right back into the swing of things? What happened to her planet and people? And what about Leith? We get nearly nothing of his backstory. This book is packed with action but I felt so disconnected from the characters that I kept getting distracted from what was actually taking place in the story. Overall, I give this book a rating of 3 stars. This series has promise and potential to be really great. But I don’t think it’s for me.
I was given this ARC for an honest review. I actually enjoyed this novel, even though this genre is not my favourite. I thought the concept of Ayla's "super power" was a clever and original touch, especially her ability to tear out pages. Very evocative. It made me want to read more about where this will lead Ayla, and at what cost.
I also loved the fact that the fantasy/sci-fi elements were not so technical or detailed as to cause you to lose interest because you had fallen down a rabbit hole of self indulgence.
Queen of Spades: Awakening was such an intense read.
An adventure thousands of years in time but still firmly grounded in what happened to MC Ayla in the real world, the plot only thickens by the end, heading into book 2. Awakening has action packed fight scenes, snarky androids, alien food and drink, both virtual and physical assault ops, super-powered nanites, vivid space stations and settings, and some very steamy scenes! Great for anyone who likes romance with their action, and deadly machinations with their sci-fi!
E.J. Dawson made me fall deeper in love with Science fiction. She has a knack for not underestimating her readers, and I love that.
Her ability to add the perfect amount of accessories (details) to a story make for smooth reading and left me hungering for more of the world she created!
Good thing she was so inclined to gift us a trilogy!
I thoroughly enjoyed this sci-fi adventure. Ayla is the ultimate misunderstood villain. The cool crew of characters that free her from her prison, each bring something unique to the story. The world building is creative and the action is a thrill-ride! I’m looking forward to the next book in this saga. An excellent read.
This story took me completely by surprise. After an interesting, but less than exciting, prologue and a disorienting wake-up sequence, I didn't have high expectations. But then Ayla was on her feet and I couldn't put the book down! There's just the right mix of sci-fi action and gut-wrenching emotion. The characters were so real, I feel like I know them. Reading book two is not optional; I need to know everything asap! I hope the author is busy dreaming up many more sequels!
An assassin frozen in time must survive an unforeseen future
Ayla is an assassin with a special skill set. She can see how someone will die before it happens. She uses her skills to complete her murder for hire contracts until she awakens one morning to find she is several thousand years in the future and now owes this stranger Leith for bringing her back to the land of the living. As she works to repay the debt, she also struggles to find the reason she was frozen over 3000 years ago. This story is action packed and fast paced. The characters are well developed and the scenes are descriptive and makes you feel like you are right there in the story. This futuristic sci-fi thriller is a must read for anyone who is looking for a great adventure to distract you from the stress of our current Covid 19 world. Check this one out folks. It is well worth the read.
I’ve gotta admit, I’m new to science fiction. But this book was incredible! The writing drew me in, and the lead character was completely kickass. Looking forward to reading more from this author!
I received a copy of this book via NertGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I must say, this is one of the best books that I've read in quite some time. The beginning of the book had me a little confused and honestly the prologue could have been skipped. Its been a while that I have a read a Sci-Fi that has captured my attention quite like this one. The synopsis is well written and very accurate to the novel itself, there is nothing I dislike more than finding out a book is not at all what it was described to be. I feel like I should be more critical of this book but honestly, there was nothing about it that I didn't like, and that is rare. The author has some serious writing skill and I tip my hat to EJ Dawson. The characters were so well developed and there was a great dynamic between Ayla and Leith. I was constantly on the edge of my seat to find out what was happening next.
The great thing about this book was that the romance didn't feel forced, it was a natural progression that fell in nicely with the story.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Over the last few years, I've started moving towards Sci-Fi books with strong female leads and after reading several hundred, I'm having a hard time finding new books to read.
As I stated earlier, I am particular to books with a strong female lead and this book didn't disappoint. As soon as I finished it, I immediately checked to see if the second book in the series had been published, so I could continue the adventure.
Definitely recommend if you enjoy sci-fi with a strong heroine.
Dawson opens with a tension-filled prologue that sucks you in and makes you care about the characters a page or two in, before smacking you over the head with an action scene, featuring snappy dialogue. Queen of Spades: Awakening is an awesome sci fi novel. I liked the MC a lot and the way we discovered the world through her eyes. Totally worth a read.
Love this book. Ayla is tough but not unrealistic, and the romance is excellently paced. Like, I'm really impressed. I think I could have used more world building, as Ayla is thrust into a new environment, but I thought it was great. Sign me up for book 2!!
To say that I enjoyed this book would be an understatement. I fell in love with the world E.J. created and I'm now pretty desperate to read the next one!
I absolutely adored reading a story where the seemingly 'villainous' character takes centre stage as our heroine. Ayla is one of those morally grey characters who somehow manages to make you fall in love with her anyway. It took me a while to warm up to her as a person, but I completely understood her struggle having woken up thousands of years after she's been frozen in time and not knowing the world around her. One of the most interesting aspects of this story was her gift, the ability to not only see a person's death date, but rip out the pages of their life. I really felt like the primary theme of this was death and how fleeting life can be, which is a topic I'm well versed in so to see it in this instance was particularly rewarding for me.
One of the most beautiful parts of this story was the world E.J. created. It's subtly weaved throughout the story, giving you just enough to understand the setting which I thoroughly appreciated. I never felt lost or confused even with all technological aspects.
Now, I have to talk about the romance because let's face it, this is me and I love a bit of romance. The slow build of Ayla and Leith's relationship was beautifully executed. I felt the connection between them building and well, Leith's openness and willingness to try to give Ayla a home, that was pretty swoon worthy! The anticipation and the build up made the first kiss and subsequent steamy times so much more rewarding.
And a special extra mention goes out to her supporting characters, Casey and Kabe. Our lovable android made me smile with her smart comments. I loved the development of her and Kabe across the book. Also, this romance lover is totally shipping Casey and our resident doctor, Kabe.
I really can't wait to read the next book and see where Ayla, Leith, Casey and Kabe go next!
*I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest opinion given freely.*
This story is amazing! The premise, characters, and setting are all phenomenal. It’s layer upon layer of goodness.
The story revolves around the FMC who wakes up to a world thousands of years in the future. But that’s nothing. This FMC is no innocent Sleeping Beauty; she’s actually a highly trained, highly deadly assassin. Within moments, she proves it by killing a mercenary. And the best part? She does it by using her special ability. She can look at a person, identify the date they’re going to die, manipulate time, and change that date to the immediate present. Yep; instant death. I love this.
As if I wasn’t already staying up late to read this, it’s then revealed that the MMC is Black!!! Oh God, I’m sooooo happy to see this. I can’t articulate how important it is to see characters who look like me represented in a positive manner. The MMC is highly competent and intelligent. He’s calm and rational in tense situations. He’s patient and encouraging with others (his slow burn romance with the FMC made me swoony). His inner strength and grace were on full display in the face of a slur and grief at the loss of close friends.
The SciFi world created by the author is tech heavy and amazing. It’s vast and boundless, but the author’s descriptive writing brings it all within reach. The author’s explanations of folding and gating to transit the galaxy; cyborgs, weapons, and clothing made from tech that doesn’t yet exist; the physics of fight scenes in confined and open spaces; etc made complete sense. Whether grounded in reality or spun from whole cloth, the writing made those concepts very easy to understand.
The extremely well-written Black MMC has made this author a favorite for me. At times, the writing is a bit clunky, but I am completely forgiving that. With the unique premise, competent MCs, interesting side characters, and boundless setting, I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.
This was my 1st novel by this author. I really enjoyed it. I loved the relationship between Ayla and Leith. I cant wait to jump into the next book in the series.
