Many of us are addicted to something, be it cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, or chocolate. This book looks at why people become addicted and provides practical steps to help overcome addictions. It also contains a comprehensive information and resource section.
Overcoming Addiction provides an all-rounded approach to understanding and healing addition, covering social, emotional, and relational approaches, amongst others. I like the way the author broadened the definition of addiction to cover many things: from food, to work, to people, and of course, to alcohol and drugs. The book first explores reasons for becoming addicted, then it looks at overcoming addiction through emotional, physical, sexual, social, creative, intellectual, and spiritual nourishment. Then, the book talks about ‘staying off for life’ by modifying one’s lifestyle and receiving ongoing support. When reading, I found the concept of ‘emotional addictions’ very eye-opening, and whilst some of the definitions of addiction explored may not corroborate the medical definitions, it was interesting to delve into this topic from a primarily psychological perspective.
