Another Bump in the Road follows the experiences of Linda Burge along her 7 year journey with ALS. Through a series of interviews, Linda chronicles her illness, bringing the reader into the reality of living with ALS. She describes the impact of increasing disabilities, and the accommodations necessitated as a result. Throughout the book, vignettes from family and friends give glimpses of Linda's life before ALS. These snippets allow us to see and understand the whole Linda. Linda came to consider her illness a blessing that enriched her life. She lost the battle with an opponent she knew she could not beat, yet this story celebrates the triumph of Linda's indomitable spirit. She lived her life with ALS surrounded by a wealth of family and friends, and she maintained her independence and quality of life right to the end.
My favorite part was the way she handled the insurance company when they threatened to discontinue PT. I know all too well, what it's like to have to advocate for myself. After reading this, I know that I want to handle ALS the way that Linda did.
