Screams of agony. Cries of terror. The sounds of a dying civilization echo all around Josh Standing as he navigates the aftermath of this new post-apocalyptic world. All traces of modern advancements have been wiped away by the supernova EMP when he washes ashore on the Georgia coast.
Alone.
And when a psychotic gang takes Josh prisoner, he’s torn between grief and gratitude that his daughter isn’t discovered nearby. Josh swore long ago to serve and protect—and he desperately wants to help the other prisoners—but his daughter needs him, too. If she’s still alive.
Circumstances are only slightly better for Josh’s wife Maxine and their cancer-stricken son as they settle at the family farm in West Virginia. There, they discover Maxine’s beloved mother has been heavily effected with the aftereffects of the supernova, and her battle-hardened father struggling to keep the family together. Even worse, a local militia is targeting the farm for its resources, which causes further dissention in the family over how to handle the attacks.
When the dust from the firefights settle, the choice between duty and family will be the difference in who is left standing.
Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.
Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"
It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.
This is book two of the Supernova EMP series and continues to follow the Standing family as they are fighting to survive, whilst separated by circumstances beyond their control. Maxine Standing and her son Storm were at a hospital for his last chemotherapy session and her estranged husband Josh and their daughter Tally were on a ship with a group of young offenders, when the supernova and EMP struck. These initial events were covered in the first book and the start of this second book does a grand job of reviewing events for those that may not have read book one. It was also a good refresher of what had happened to everyone and where they had ended up so far.
Josh, Tally and Poppet, a mob wife, were chucked onto a life raft and have now been separated as it crashed into land. Josh is taken prisoner by a large gang who are holding people outside of Savannah, Georgia. The man in charge of this group is holding people by threatening those they love, sending the men of this group out to run raids in Savannah and get supplies for them. His own security team never go all the way in as it is too dangerous, but the rest he treats like cannon fodder. Josh is sent out on one of these teams and only just makes it back in one piece. He’s glad his daughter wasn’t taken with him, but however much he wants to find her, the ramifications of his actions if he escapes are too much for him.
Meanwhile, Maxine and Storm make their way to her parent’s farm and what they find when they arrive is really distressing. Maxine’s mother has been driven mad like so many others, by this supernova event and her father has her chained up in a room. Maxine’s work as a nurse makes her want to change the way her father is dealing with his wife, but they now have a lot more to worry about. A local militia have taken over the local town and have targeted their farm, stealing livestock and supplies one night. They then come around days later, offering their services as a type of protection racket and want to survey their stock of supplies, stating they wish to share supplies with all the residents of the town. What that really means, is that they will take everything by force and kill anyone in their way!
Battle lines will be drawn and not everyone is going to survive. The effects of the supernova have changed everybody. Some have become extremely violent and turned into killers, others have had any type of sociopathic tendencies however small, now been exaggerated beyond control, such as the leader keeping others prisoner by threats. Some who seem to be normal are still left struggling with their emotions and find that anger and blind actions are trying to take over. People can change on the flip of a coin, from seemingly normal and coherent, to a manic killer.
The book ends yet again, like the first one, on a crucial point and leaves matters on a cliff edge! It is an obvious place to stop the action, but certainly leaves you wanting to know what would happen next! There is action throughout the book, with battles to survive against whomever the characters come across and doing all that they can to avoid populated areas. Everyone is affected and not everyone has the where withal to fight or even the strength to overcome those with more power or superior weaponry. I loved the ‘ant man’ character and his prepper mentality and training. We are all in a situation now, where some of this may be of use to all, as our world changes around us with no control. I look forward to the next book in the series and hope it won’t be long. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
I received this book via a promo code and this is my voluntary review. I read Dark End as the ebook of this EMP-apocalypse scenario and have now decided to concentrate my journey through the rest of the series as audiobooks because Matt Weights narrative performance is as awesome as the world building. If you enjoyed Jericho the TV show, you will LOVE this series. The world has been screwed up by a supernova that wiped out all technology as we know it and has affected large portions of the population by turning them into violent crazies. The Standings are our family of protagonists in this post-apocalyptic scenario as they struggle to reconnect at Maxine's family farm. In this installment, Donald, Storm and Maxine deal with the threats to the farm from the new powers in Pictford, trying to hide her sick mother from Dale and his henchmen. Tally is travelling with fellow survivors Henry and Green, taking the risk out on the open roads trying to avoid Trace Parker and his minions while her father Josh, battles for his freedom and tries to do a little good for the kids Trace is holding hostage outside Savannah. A medical crisis forces Maxine to seek help from an old enemy to steal a doctor to help her son and the discovery that Maria is still alive, puts Josh and his reunion with his kids in peril as Dale Craggen mounts his forces. Ends on a cliff hanger, but I am still hooked to this series.
We pick up at the cliffhanger from the close of the prior volume when Josh was evicted from the Seahawk. This story from Grace Hamilton feels different to me. I’m unsure whether it is the antagonist, the inclusion of the children, the violence, or the effect of the supernova. I had recently written a review on another author who I felt had included more violence in the story than I thought usual for her. I wonder if this is an upcoming trend or I am just imagining this. In either case, the story is unique and interesting, the characters authentic and likable. The only problem I had with Josh was his willingness to stay to help instead of leaving to find his daughter. Although being an ex-police officer, I thought this out of character for him. I have to know how this turns out for the survivors of the supernova. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Deep End is book two of the Supernova EMP series and picks up where book one left off. If you read book one then you know the Standing family are trying to make their way to the family farm in West Virginia. There is a lot going on in this action packed, intense story and from beginning to end this captivating read had me on the edge of my seat hoping this family survives. The writing is great, the characters are believable and the apocalyptic world this author has created is scary and I can't wait to read the conclusion to this series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
When Grace Hamilton has a new book it immediately jumps to the front of my queue. Each book is better than the previous (and the previous was excellent). How she comes up with these stories and characters I have no clue. But you can count on her to have a unique scenario and characters with a personal take on the task at hand. This book is no different. It's an excellent continuation from book 1, the cause and effect of the SHTF are nothing you ever read before. Yes there is the obligatory bad guy group, but even that situation is novel in it's approach.
After reading Dark End I was curious about the sequel ...... and what a sequel! This part draws you into the story and will not let you go. Full of exciting, unexpected twists, finding your own powers and standing up for your values and standards in a time that seems to have no norms anymore. Maxine, Storm, Josh and Tally meet again, but the journey towards each other is one of hardships. A very strong sequel which means that you have to read part 3

There is so much happening in Deep End that it’s impossible to put down, rushing from one battle to another. On the surface, it outlines in some detail, the ugliness of humanity lost and taken over by evil and madness. But there is also a family already torn and on the verge of collapse. Relationships are strained and there are secrets held. It’s an exciting read that has the best cliffhangers ever! And I don’t care too much for cliffhangers.
Grace Hamilton writes outstanding apocalyptic drama and this book is an exemplar example of the genre. With plenty of depth to the characters and a continuing twisted storyline this book is easily worth the four stars given. The only negative to Ms Hamilton's books are the way the story splits over multiple books.

I enjoyed this book, it was non stop action with a gripping plot, and the characters are believable. I was on the edge of my seat, routing for MC Josh as he fought to keep his family together and get them to safety, but maxine irritated me as she seemed to be more concerned about her own personal drama than the reality of the situation around her, The narration was good, and I can't wait for the next book to find out what's next for Josh and his family.
First Matt Weight did an excellent job narrating and he’s moved to my top 10! Anything Grace writes will blow you away. She will teach you things too. Her characters are real and alive. They feel like people you could know and be friends with. Do yourself a favor and pick up this series or any of her series. I just found this author and I love her stories. This story is no different. There is plenty of action, drama, survival and the difference between good and evil. We might still have electricity but are we headed towards the Deep End? Thank you for another great story, I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I've read several books written by Grace Hamilton; she has done a great job at writing a good book; she is becoming one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read more of books her books.
The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

This one was tougher to start with everything going on in life and the world, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. A solid story that picks up right where book 1 left off and has a bit of action, drama, and heart it carries us to where we are eagerly awaiting book three.
If you haven't read book 1, don't jump in here. read these in order or you'll be lost :)

I have no idea how this author does it, but she has produced another wonderful book that shows the good and the evil that humans are capable of. A brilliant read.

Love the way this author always writes about family and getting home. But sometimes family isn't who you think. This family has already come through many enemies, but can they hang on. Recommend
Book 2 picks up where it left off from book1. Finally Standing family meet up after going through some difficult moments along the way. Even with them all together they are in another was with more people. Great read.
I have really enjoyed this book, and so far the series has been a really great story. It is very interesting and the adaptation and growth of the characters is very well written.
Wow! The sky sure has control over everyone with people trying to kill for no reason just the pain in there head. The trials of getting the family back together.
