This is book two of the Cait Lennox: femme fatale series, but only the first book I have read by this author. Cait is the main character and she has inherited her mothers and grandmothers supernatural powers and abilities to connect with souls in the Otherworld. Cait is still working out what her powers are, but she definitely saved her brother’s life, the previous year, by insisting he didn’t get on a bus which later crashed. She has dreams which can also be visions. Her mother’s powers aren’t as strong, but she has great practice in alternative medicine and is attuned to her clients.

Cait was sent an email from a mother of a missing child, by someone she had given some help to, asking for any help she can provide in the search for the woman’s son, James, who has been missing for some months. She starts to gets dreams about what happened to James and she is dragged across into the Otherworld and finds the Gatekeeper of the Otherworld wants her soul for himself! She barely manages to escape and only does, as her grandmothers and other ancestors, join together to give her strength to overcome him and a spell to hold him off. She manages protect James’ soul and he now keeps a tab on her in return.

The death of young children leads to a cult killing them in a sacrificial manner, in different parts of the country. Cait dreams about a local group of missing children and the location of their bodies and manages to inform the mother of one, who asks the police to investigate. The other souls in the Otherworld are trapped by the Gatekeeper, who wants their souls for his power source, trapped in a place between Heaven and Hell, where they can’t escape and go to their final resting place.

Cait’s parents, Jools and G (yep! Only one initial – I’m sure it is probably explained in one of the earlier books as to why!), suggest a holiday to Italy for Cait’s upcoming 25th birthday and ask Cait and her brother Dec if they are interested in going with them, which of course they are delighted with! They meet up with one of their parents close friends Paul, who is working for a charity and is checking up on the conditions and all the aid money being provided for the refugees escaping from Syria, Africa and other places. They find out the local refugee camps are being run by family members of the Mafia and 90% of the aid money is disappearing! It is a large new source of legal funds for the Mafia and great business for them. Huge profits and the chance to control new groups of people who are at their weakest point.

Paul takes Cait and Dec with him as he goes to visit one of the refugee camps, but leaves them at a nearby small town to sightsee, while he is escorted by a bodyguard to the camp. Another interaction with a pair of refugee brothers trying to sell hats, gives more vibes to Cait and one gives off huge amounts of danger and malice. She had met the younger brother, Aziz, in the town they are all staying with and got a vision of his journey over the water and what had happened to him. He wonders if she is magical, for knowing such things, but his older brother tells him to stay away from the infidels.

Whilst in the small town with Dec, Cait notices that there is a man taking photos, which Aziz’s brother turns his back to, something that seems odd. That man, as she finds out later, is an ex-SAS Sergeant Tony ‘Ice’ O’Donnell, working for the Aussies to hunt a terrorist who killed some officers and is thought to be in the area. He has been to war and has his problems from his service in Afghanistan, which still haunt him and led to him being discharged from the SAS, but allowed to join a special force hunting terrorists. He is certainly not the type of person to believe in any of Cait’s dreams or insights.

Events occur which push Tony and Cait together in the hunt for this terrorist, known only as Mohammed, while Cait is still being haunted by the Gatekeeper of Lost Souls from the Otherworld. He has set his target on Cait and wants her soul. She has set herself as a target when she went searching for James. She needs the help of her family to overcome his power and keep those close to her safe. But somehow, the Gatekeeper has ways to reach her world, with links to the corporeal world through the Mafia, terrorism and the cult known as the Brethren.

There are parts of the book showing how Cait is growing to accept her powers and the new ones she keeps gaining. Her relationship with her family is a strong one and very necessary at times. The investigations into the cult murders of children, the events of terrorism in Sicily, Italy and the involvement of the powerful members of the Brethren are all linked through Cait and the Gatekeeper and she has a battle on her hands. This is an interesting mix of supernatural with the modern day plague caused by terrorism. Whether people believe in the supernatural or not, there have always been people with that sense or feelings of what is to come, or insights into others’ lives and those of their departed loved ones.

This book may question your belief in what may be possible in that area, but it is also a modern day saga of the scourge of terrorism and the plight of hundreds of thousands of refugees, fleeing from poverty, famine and war. Highlighting the good and bad on both sides of the equation. An interesting read, that start you believing it is a supernatural story, but soon adds in problems with the Mafia, a cult of sadistic killers of children and even terrorism. The role of Tony becomes quite pivotal in Cait’s life and a really important part of the investigation into the terrorists who cause danger to those Cait knows and loves.

Cait has a target on her back and her connection with James is still strong, he is now paying back to her for her help, with messages from his side of death, to help in her fight against the Gatekeeper and what is happening around her. I really enjoyed this book, the opening scenes with the refuges in a flimsy boat, were made very visual by the news reports over the last two years of refugees who didn’t make it, especially the tales of children dying and being swept up on the beach. All the thousands who we never get to know about! Hard hitting and lots of real life situations, all in a book that is really easy to read and with great characters. I really enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to others. I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Ok, I definitely do love fast-paced urban fiction, action and adventure, exotic locales and the paranormal, so I couldn’t resist the temptation that is Roderick Donald’s The Assassin's Apprentice: Urban Fiction with a Paranormal Twist (Cait Lennox: femme fatale series Book 2). Now the bad news here is that I got over a quarter of the way in before actually reading the cover and seeing that this was a book 2. The good news is that, while I suspect things were going on that I didn’t catch due to missing that prior book, this one can definitely be read stand-alone. Even better news is that it’s freakin’ fantastic. Cait is a superb kick-a** leading lady, just the type I love, and the story itself is superbly written, and superbly fun. Frankly, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed, I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the first book in this series and to then read the later ones as I can grab them.
