Gail Simone unveils her own unique vision for Wonder Woman in this hard-hitting graphic novel collection, Wonder Woman by Gail Simone Omnibus. Collects Wonder Woman #14-44 (2008), #600 and Sensation Comics featuring Wonder Woman #1.
Gail Simone is a comic book writer well-known for her work on Birds of Prey (DC), Wonder Woman (DC), and Deadpool (Marvel), among others, and has also written humorous and critical commentary on comics and the comics industry such as the original "Women in Refrigerators" website and a regular column called "You'll All Be Sorry".
A pretty consistent Wonder Woman run from Gail Simone where a well written Diana is allowed to shine. She is portrayed as fairly complete a character, so there isn’t much of an overall arc here for the titular hero, however, her traits and themes are well explored in some memorable, but fluctuating in quality, storylines. It’s a shame that it is the final couple of issues which struggle the most, especially as the start is so promising. Still strong and well worth a read, this is a great way to get into Wonder Woman after you’ve had your first helping elsewhere.
Ok so there was a lot going on in this omnibus. The first half had some moments that had me a little lost. I feel like some of it was due to the fact that this book started at issue #14. After reading, I feel like I should have read the 13 issues that came before. There were things that were already in motion that I feel like I would have grasped better if I had read those previous issues. Also, some stuff was probably because I know nothing about Wonder Woman except where she is from. I feel like the foe Genocide came out of no where. I was like who the hell is this? I also wondered who the outfit Diana was working for. Like how long and why was she with them. Some of the characters like Etta were new to me but seemed like they were part of Wonder Woman’s lore. The biggest WTF moment was when her hand turned into a red monster looking paw. Then the guy with no name conveniently pulled these two red gloves out that she and the other Conan type character put on. There was no explanation what that was about. Then the next arc, it’s all gone with no explanation. 🧐 However there were some nice action and moments that were entertaining.
Luckily the second half of the book dealt with things that had been developing in this book. I found myself less lost and started really getting into the story. Pretty solid art throughout as well. The only real drawback here was the arc about Diana’s moms sister. It was too short. I thought it was a cool idea that I would have like to have seen explored more. But still had solid ending. I’ll put this somewhere between 3.25 and 3.5 stars.
Gail Simone's run is wonderful in many ways. It creates a great cast of characters and really makes them into real, living human beings, whether they be Diana herself or a group of super apes. And when it focuses on mythology such as the amazing, extended arc with Genesis and the Olympian it soars. So maybe two-thirds of this volume is terrific.
But it also has notable drawbacks.
First, for some reason Simone insists on delving into the science-fiction universe of DC, and that never feels natural. It starts out with a very early GL & The Khunds storyline that disrupts everything Simone is building and ends with an unnatural storyline about snake invaders that ends the main story, postulating a previously unknown aunt and forcing us to work really hard to suspend disbelief.
Second, it has a bad ending. Most of that is that all the plot lines are dropped flat so that JMS can come in and write a crappy Wonder Woman story for four or five months before he gets bored and goes elsewhere. So, the terrific Nemesis romance plot is dropped and the super apes are unceremoniously written out and Achilles and his Olympians and Genocide are never heard from again.
Third, it has a rushed ending. The last issue is actually quite terrible because Simone suddenly brings in every supporting character she can think of and does a big, unearned victory lap. It's actually quite hard to read her last issue of the main comic, which is sad given most of the rest of the run is so good.
So, Simone was mostly good, and editorial was mostly bad, which means she was working at DC.
(There are also some one-offs that end this volume and are mostly mediocre, but I suppose it's nice to have all of Simones WW work.)
[On a third read, the weak parts of this volume and its general inconsistency were more obvious. The problem was that I'd read the Rucka run just before this, and even though it also had problems with DC screwing the ending, it was a much more consistent run, much more in tune with the spirit of Wonder Woman. Still, I think the Genocide and Warkiller arcs are quite good, just the flaws of others are more obvious.]
I nekako nedostaje neka velika završnica.
This wonder woman omnibus by gail simone is a bit of a mixed bag. Diana in her ‘secret agent’ phase rather than diplomat/ambassador. A few dark and gritty moments, some light hearted moments and some absurd moments. I’m less keen on the chapters involving the green lanterns, the alien invasions Achilles and Zeus but the points that really shine are anything with the amazons or the underworld. On the whole the art throughout is reasonably consistent but terry dodson and aaron lopresti are probably my favourites. The first arc The circle is very good. Expatriate wasn’t to my taste. Ends of the Earth was probably my favourite. a star in the heavens was a bit too silly for me. Rise of the Olympian was good but there was too much focus on the gods and not enough on the origins and resolution of the genocide storyline for my liking. Birds of paradise was ridiculous fun. Warkiller was also good but Zeus annoys me. A murder of crows had so much potential and the children of ares could have been formidable villains but they were criminally underused and the story wrapped up in just two issues. the wrath of the silver serpent seemed a bit of a waste of 3 issues that could have been spent expanding the children of ares. However the art of nicola scott almost makes up for it!
First off, I will be Diana’s biggest defender when it comes to her meta-human spy gimmick, although I prefer it to be temporary and not diminished in power. Still, it was a cool moment that continued the lore. I think Gail Simone made bolder choices to reinvent the character, but I love how Wonder Woman's story extends from the Greek Pantheon. I appreciated the inclusion of Norse elements, even if it dragged on and the dialogue felt off-putting at times.
I can’t recall some storylines, but I remember that she gave a certain villain a horrendous name that has prevented them from reappearing. Gail doesn’t always seem to be culturally competent—this is still an issue today, just look at X-Men—but this particular storyline felt like a genuine attempt at creativity. I believe Wonder Woman needs to have exclusively women writers for all comics going forward. I feel like these stories could have done more by allowing Diana’s personality to shine while passing the Bechdel Test.
I have not read much Wonder Woman but it would be hard for me to imagine it gets much better than this. I could feel while reading this that this was one of the fundamental definitive runs. It took Wonder Woman from where she was and stripped everything about her identity away. Each arc built to a conclusion transforming her identity and life. Wonder Woman is strong, she’s a warrior, and she’s a princess but her super power through out these books are shown to be her kindness, empathy and love.
I had high hopes going into this omni, considering that this is pretty widely regarded as a top-tier Wonder Woman run, but I have to say that I’m frankly unimpressed. Aaron Lopresti and Bernard Chang do most of the heavy lifting on art, and they both do a great job, but Simone fills every story with so much incessant dialogue and narration that it comes off like a bad Silver Age comic most of the time. Huge disappointment.
Some arcs were better than others, but overall this was a pretty solid run! Gail Simone’s characterization of Diana and understanding of the themes central to WW were pretty on point. The team-ups were fun, especially the one with Black Canary! The major thing I didn’t like was the unnecessary Tom Tresser romance, which I felt detracted from the quality of the run.
A little uneven, but that's to be expected from a wide run like this. Overall, I really liked it. It's my favorite work of Gail Simone's that I've read. Some of the art is way better than the others. I did not care for Dodson or Chang's art, but I really liked Lopresti and Scott's art.
This has been a nice, long revisit of a run that meant a lot to me growing up. While my introduction to Simone's work began with Birds of Prey, this cemented me as a longtime fan. Although this run isn't as popular as Rucka's, it has its own distinct charm.
I'm a big fan of Gail Simone and had wanted this, when the book initially came out. As expected with her work, it made me laugh, tear up at places, and rush to read the next page.
Some arcs were clearly better than others. Genocide stood out as a worthy villain. The intertwining of Greek mythology sometimes did not land or mesh well with the concurrent Wonder Woman stories.
Gail Simone is an absolute titan of the comic book industry and it is so nice to see her works finally given the Omnibus treatment, especially her run on Wonder Woman. This is great. It’s just great. Required reading for any fan of Diana Prince.
I can't think of a bad word for Gail Simone's Wonder Woman I just think she just gets her. This has some great stories in it that I think any fan of Wonder Woman would enjoy it.
