Kara thought that her lack of wings was a problem in the world of Valkyries–until she stumbled across a dragon's nest. She soon learned that wherever you found a dragon’s nest, a mother dragon was always nearby. No matter how much combat training she had, she could still become lunch.

She often talks to creatures of all kinds and has a passion for animals, nature, and travel. She lives in Queensland, Australia, with her husband and has survived teaching her three children how to drive.
Marked plays the role of a prequel for the Valkyrie Academy Dragon Alliance and the story follows Kara, a wingless Valkyrie who strives to show other that even those without wings can be worthy and brave. After an incident with her bullies, Kara runs out of the academy and stumbles onto a nest of golden eggs being attacked by a hideous creature. She displays a great deal of courage when she jumped between the egg and the monster, even if it wasn't that great of a decision. Despite this being a short story we get a nice worldbuilding and now that I read the first few book I have a better understanding at what really happened in this story.
A quaint, little story. Kara was born a wingless Valkyrie but she has heart and courage well beyond others with wings in her academy. In a rush to distance herself from some of the mean girls in her school, she ends up in the vicinity of a dragon nest. While in a limited sense this is almost a story in itself, it really appears to be more of an introduction than an actual story. Still, it's an enjoyable quick read.
Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
This short story is the prequel to the Valkyrie Academy series. It involves the meeting between "Wingless" as she is cruelly called by her classmates, our MC, and a very large and upset dragon.
As this work is available free, it offers a no risk introduction to the series and is a good indicator whether you should try tackling part one. I certainly will.
Suitable for those who have never read the series.
If she(main character whatever her name is) is wingless who’s only path in life is to be a slave, then why is she attending school? Why is she not already a slave? Why is the academy so close to dragons and other monsters? This chick just ran there. Someone with wings will make it in no time. Also the dragon speaks like any Jon Doe you bump into on the street. After MC talked them up, I was expecting more. This failed to peak my interest to read the book.
Ok, I just read this short intro to the series and I must say that I'm hooked!! Great build up and great way to set the stage for things to come. Not many authors can do that, and know that I've been reading all kinds of stories for awhile now. Ms . Cole I will out in the same category as Piers Anthony and Ann McCarthy, just to name a few. So know that you have a New fan and I'll be here reading your work!!
So far, I’m interested. I have to say, it has a good set up. It’s a little cliched, seeing how stories like these always begin with the character(s) being bullied in some way due to their impairment of some sort, but it still works. Interestingly, the heroine uses a sling, you don’t read about those often in books like these where the staple is a sword or bow.
Bottomline, it has the makings of a good series. Im definitely going to read the rest.
Well that was short and sweet and I am not sure what else. I see potential for the author I found this book for free on my kindle and overall it was okay. I think perhaps I should have read the first book for some reason prequels seem to make more sense if you have read another book in the series.
I'm not used to reading short stories, but I was super intrigued by the summary of this series. I started with this as the prequel, but I'm wondering if maybe I should have read the others first. I love the idea for this book. It's pretty hard for me to resist anything with valkyries/Norse mythology and dragons, but this book has both! I'm excited to see how the rest of the story unfolds.
This prequel gives you the backstory of the main character. This inquisitive child stumbles upon a wondrous discovery, only to find herself risking her own life to keep this precious find safe. This easy to read short really grabbed me and accomplished what it need to…it made thus reader curious enough to want more.
This is a wonderful short story of how the story begins. The story of Kara is a great way to get to know what lead to her learning about dragons. It just wasn't long enough!
This a shorth and sweet introduction to the series and intrigued me enough to want to read on, the character was enlivened so I want to know what her future holds. I'll be purchasing the next in the series!
I really liked this Prequel and I am looking forward to reading Book 1! I can't wait to start reading it! It sounds like this Series is going to be a Great Series! I think that You will like it too!
This is a free short story download from Cope's online newseletter and also serves as a prologue for the Valkyrie Academy Dragon Alliance series. This tells the story of Kara, a Valkyrie without wings, condemned to a life of servitude to the winged Vakyrie. Managing to escape briefly from the stifling Academy she stumbles upon something rarely seen, and also something very disturbing.
Acting as it does as an introduction, the story is quite slight but it is an engaging one. Aimed squarely at middle school age children, Kara makes a sympathetic leading character and her accidental quest is thrilling, wonderful and exciting
Anyone who hasn't yet found Cope's fabulous young adult books should take the opportunity to embark on her newest series of adventures.
