A concise guide about acupuncture that manages not to be too overwhelming or wordy. Author Sarah Swanberg does an excellent job breaking down what acupuncture is, discussing the main principals of it, delving into diagnosis and treatment, and then including lots of helpful info on the practicalities of it and how it can be used in action (pregnancy, allergies, migraines, weight loss, insomnia, memory, and many more). Also included is glossary, resources, and references to help reinforce everything discussed in the book. There are many helpful pictures and charts to help illustrate different techniques and to make it more visually appealing. It's not a very large book and can be immensely useful for patients who want to learn more about acupuncture and how it can be applied in their lives. An excellent resource.

Prior to reading this book I was somewhat familiar with acupuncture. Having read it, I now feel that I have a solid understanding of acupuncture and how it relates to traditional and metaphysical medicine.

A Patient’s Guide to Acupuncture provides a solid overview of the field, various ailments and conditions that may be treated by acupuncture and the theory underlying the practice. The perspective is primarily from an exoteric, or surface level vantage point, which serves as a useful starting point, but if you’re interested in a deeper understanding of acupuncture, you will need to seek out additional materials.

Overall the book has a nice design and the material is simply stated and straightforward. Also, I was surprised at the level of complexity concerning acupuncture and the range of conditions that acupuncture can treat. It’s really quite an amazing field and appears to be a valuable complement to traditional medicine.

Personally I would have liked a bit more depth concerning the deeper aspects and traditions underlying acupuncture. Also, when describing the acupuncture meridians focused diagrams highlighting the meridian in question would have made it easier to follow along through many of the discussions. These points do not necessarily detract from the experience, but rather would have enhanced the journey.

Overall, if you’re new to acupuncture or perhaps if you receive acupuncture treatments and would like to know more about the subject then this is your book. It’s a quick read and you’ll have a solid understanding of acupuncture by the time you finish reading.

Excellent book for both patients and professionals interested in acupuncture. I am an Integrative Medicine Doctor who does acupuncture for a living, and I still learned a few new things! Loved the explanations and graphics to demonstrate core TCM concepts. Easy to read given her style of writing. Overall, a very approachable book on a complex topic. Highly recommend.
