What is a better life? When your parents send you with an unfamiliar family to go west where opportunities are supposed to be better, Ellen wondered better for whom. Times were hard, that was true, but to leave her family in search of more opportunities for a seventeen year old girl was difficult. It wasn't long before she realized that the Martin family only took her along to help with the work required to travel west on a covered wagon. Befriended by the woman in the wagon behind theirs, Ellen came to the conclusion that she would be better off slipping away in the dead of night to search for her own happiness.
Who is your real family, one by birth or one by love?
Ellen was sent out West on a wagon train with a couple who offered to care for her. The people were not kind to her and she finally left them to be on her own. Ellen met a man and his granddaughter and was invited to come live with them. They grew to love each other and helped each other out with whatever they needed. Ellen's parents wrote to her asking her to come back home to live, they were doing better financially. Ellen was happy where she was and told them no. They demanded her to come home. She wrote and told them she had gotten married, which was a lie. Read to see what happened next!
This is a wonderful bitter/sweet, historical, adventurous, short story. I enjoyed this story, it is my first book by this author that i have read. It was well written, with a good plot interesting and entertaining from the beginning to the end. The vivid characters had personalitIes that came alive. At times it brought tears to my eyes, sad and sweet.
This is a story following Ellen on a wagon train to the West in the 1800's. She finds her enter-self and how to survive when necessary. She learns about families and friends on this trail. A good book for young or old.
A very sweet story. In today's society, young people look for a handout and won't help themselves. Although this is fictional, It's refreshing to see someone who has come up against difficult circumstances , use there brain and become a survivor. I loved the book.
What an experience. I valued her gumption and determination. Loved how she started with virtually nothing and accumulated more as she could. The love and wisdom shown her on the trail, plus God's numerous blessings lead her to a great life, despite hardships encountered on the way. The ending is good. Loved grandpa. He was sweet. A good read.
I was hooked from the first page to the last. Well wtitten, great flow, held my interest. I did not want it to end. Suitable for all ages. Quite a few life lessons and thought provoking.
The title of this story is the mantra of the theme. No matter what trials or challenges this family faced, they dealt with in faith and moved forward. A truly inspiring story.
This was a very easy book and conforting. It is different from anything I,ve ever read about going west. I would say that it would be good for young people to read. I enjoy reading all types of books, sometimes something like this book is needed.
Another awesome book God helping you through life young and alone and you meet two people that change your life and you meet the man of your life and life goes on kids and losing someone you love
