SUCH AN INTERESTING FEMALE LEAD!

Many historical fiction novels have 'atypical' female leads, but usually that means they are studious, have a smart mouth and a quick wit or perhaps even a profession. Victoria, the female lead of this book, is the first one I can positively say was 'atypical' and in the best way! It gave a nice spice to the genre and I can't wait to read more of this series!

"There are so many more things a person can do simply because they were born with berries and not bosoms."
- Victoria Daring

THE THINGS I LIKED

Victoria: How can you not love a highbred lady, who doubles as a kung-fu fighting, french speaking spy??

Plot: As the name of the genre 'historical romance' suggests, the romance in these books are often the thing that carries them. But that was not the case here, because there was actually an interesting, engaging and surprising plot that went beyond mere romance - and I loved it!

Relationship: Not only was Victoria Daring a great female lead, her counterpart Richard was equally awesome! I loved his fierceness and his clear infatuation with Victoria.

Lovely, charming, and exciting...A Lady Never Tells absolutely blew me away!

I started this bewtiching novel one day while waiting for my boys at the bus stop and was instantly hooked! It's such a unique premise - set in early 1800s, Victoria, is the daughter of a respected British diplomat who was assigned to work in China. All of the Darling children (there are 6) have been raised there and taught special skills - from languages to fighting to espionage and disguise.

When her father is called home to London they are tasked with spying for the Crown. Enter Richard Downing, a Viscount who is bored with life and one night when he runs into Vic while in disguise for her first mission he is enamored with her and tries to find out who she really is. I absolutely loved Richard and Victoria! They played off each other so well and the romance was very believable.

I've always loved reading about big families so that was another plus for me. The Darling kids were a lot of fun!

I could not have loved this book more and cannot wait for the next book in the series! I'll also be checking out Lynn's previous books - she is a phenomenal writer!

You should definitely pick up A Lady Never Tells! It was one of the best historical romances I've ever read. Witty and delightful and an absolute kicker of a book!

Lady Victoria Daring, eldest daughter of the Earl of Gadstoke has had a most unusual upbringing. Raised in China and taught Kung Fu and weapons training since she was a child – she is most definitely not your average debutante. Her mother frets that if she doesn’t return to England for a proper season, she will never marry, so when her father is recalled to England to uncover an opium ring – a season is the perfect cover!

The Home Office has launched Operation Imperial Twilight and assigns Victoria to search the home of Malcolm Egerdon, the Earl of Banebridge. While searching the study she is interrupted by Richard Downing, Viscount Ganwyd. Richard is captivated and intrigued by Victoria but she escapes before he can find out who she is. But as luck would have it, they meet again and Richard demands answers – for her part Victoria is shocked that he recognized her!

I don’t want to go into too much detail and spoil the story, so suffice it to say this was a well written, interesting story with lots of secrets, angst, spies, action, intrigue, featuring a heroine who can kick butt and a very sweet hero who loves her. If you prefer your romances on the less sensual side, this book is for you – it is very low heat. I did find parts of the book that were a little hard to believe and not everything was wrapped up in this book (no cliffhangers – more like unresolved issues), but it was still enjoyable and I look forward to reading the adventures of the other Daring siblings!

Series: Women of Daring #1
Publication Date: 9/23/19
Number of Pages: 368
*** 3.5 Stars rounded up ***

Lady Victoria Daring and her siblings Lowell (Love), Honoria, Verity, Faith, and Grace had a most unusual upbringing. Their father, Devon Daring, Earl of Gadstoke (Ambassador to the Orient), saw an opportunity for all of his children to be raised with the skills to provide services to the Crown when he observed his eldest daughter’s interest in their servants practicing Kung Fu. Each of the children had very specialized interests and talents and all were trained without respect to their gender. They were all skilled, lethal warriors, but their mother despaired of ever getting them married and settled if they didn’t get back to England and have a season. Then, the perfect opportunity arose when their father was called back to England to uncover the source of an opium ring – their seasons would be the exact cover they needed.

The Darings are to report to Miles Leigh (Lord Leavenson) who will be their liaison to the Home office during their operation – named Operation Imperial Twilight. Victoria’s first solo assignment is to search the home of Malcolm Egerdon, the Earl of Banebridge for incriminating evidence. As she searches Banebridge’s study, she is interrupted by Richard Downing, Viscount Ganwyd. He is intrigued by her, but she manages to escape before he can find out who she is or anything about her. They soon encounter each other again in a chance meeting outside a shop on Bond Street. He recognizes her! How could he recognize her – her disguise was perfect? But there he is – and she knows he’ll be demanding answers.

This book sets up what I am assuming will be the overarching theme of the series – where each sibling will get their story as they pursue the villains who are part of The House of Cards Society. Those villains are at the highest echelons of London society and the Darings will have to tread very lightly to avoid detection, keep their reputations intact, and still capture the villains.

The premise of the story is good – if far-fetched – and I enjoyed the read. The writing was generally good but was a bit slow in a few spots. Of course, not everything was wrapped up in this story since the future books will solve the ongoing mysteries. One thing that just kept drawing me out of the story is the fact that they kept referring to Richard as a viscount – and I couldn’t see any way he would be one. His brother was a duke, so there is no way he’d have a courtesy title – and the story didn’t say anything about him performing great service to the crown or being given a title for anything. So – every time the story mentioned Richard as a viscount, my mind was off wandering again. The story intrigued me and I am looking forward to the next installment. I will mention though, if you like steam in your books, this one is lacking. I hope you enjoy the read.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

'Daring' Do and Intelligence gathering in Regency times, with a difference!

Oh my! Just into the first few pages and I was already heavily engaged. I'd spotted a whole family of interesting siblings who must have their own story coming. The Daring siblings! From an early age they have been steeped in various Chinese martial arts styles, amongst other skills, that could only be found in the Far East. Together their list of abilities are formidable.
Their father, Devon Daring, the Earl of Gadstoke, has been the ambassador to the Orient for twenty-five years. The Darings are part of a secret organization of the Prince Regent's to combat would be enemies of the crown. Now it's 1817 and they have returned from Zhejiang, China to London and are tasked to carry out matters of Imperial espionage.
Victoria Daring's mission for the Home Office, as part of Operation Imperial Twilight, is to search the home of Malcolm Egerdon, the Earl of Banebridge. That's when she's interrupted by Richard Downing, Viscount Ganwyd. The viscount is bored and when he stumbled upon an out-of-place maid at Banbridge's Spring Ball he's intrigued. The spark of attraction between these two will propel them together into interesting times.
I was excited by the premise of this new series. There were some highly thrilling moments but the story ended with way too many questions, including my uneasy feelings and dislike of Miles Leigh, Earl of Leavenson, the Daring family’s only direct connection through the Home Office intelligence network and the Prince.
Apart from that there were moments when the writing dipped, and didn't stay on par.
I wonder if having to use Victoria's exploits to set the scene for future events, meant her story lost some of its initial oomph. Somewhere some of the energy of the opening scenes that so captured me dissipated.
Still I'm hooked on the series and what the future holds for the Daring menagerie.

Lady Victoria Daring is the epitome of one caught between two worlds.
Born and raised in China. Knowing nothing of her legacy as a daughter of the English aristocracy. Save the wistful recollections of her rather displaced mother.

Victoria now finds herself, as a full grown woman of 26. Having spent the entirety of her life surrounded by family. And fully about the business of training in the arts of espionage. At the behest of her diplomat father, truly in "the thick of it."
When the family is suddenly called to England to sus out enemies to crown and country among the haute ton.
All the while still trying to hold on to her heart.

One part Regency romance meets two parts Mr. And Mrs. Smith. For the perfect concoction of love, lies, secrets, and knives. Otherwise known as A Lady Never Tells.

They say that "one never knows who one might meet on one's way to work." And so begins the story of how one very wary lady spy and one alarmingly curious viscount meet at a party and play the most glorious game of romantic cat and mouse for hundreds of pages. While scouring the town's ballrooms, opium dens, and various other hidey holes of the nefarious. For clues to the identities of key players in an illegal opium syndicate. Determined to dismantle the nation's elite. One secret at a time. And despite the ever-present threat of death. Have the nerve to fall in love.

The Lady Never Tells is the perfect book for someone looking to peel plot layers one by one. As the story's plot, characters, and motivations become increasingly more sophisticated. And it's pace ever more break-neck.

As far as character pairings. There is no doubt that Victoria clearly outstrips poor Richard at every turn professionally. Although the author does make the rather annoying attempt to dumb her down a bit. Just to give the old boy a somewhat sporting chance at something akin to catching her.
And then there's the old...
"I know everyone. So let me help you gain entry." Ploy for relevance. Which worked.
What keeps interest high in the couple?
Finally?
His sincerest love and awe for Victoria, and all the bad-assery that she has to offer.
Both now and in future.
Bravo romance!

On a darker note.
This story also takes a very poignant and expertly conveyed look into the murky depths of addiction and withdrawal in the Regency era. Providing an overall depth to this tale. And making it all the more stunning in its craftsmanship.
Again, I say...
Bravo.
This book is the first in an ongoing series. It is highly recommended that this series be read as a collection. And in its entirety.

Can a woman raised to be on the top of what was expected from her, find someone whom will accept her wholly.

Right from the premise of the book I was intrigued, the Darings siblings were introduced as a group of super agents in the making with an historical background.
Then there were many breaches in the historical rules, how a second son of a duke could be a Viscount, was he rewarded a tittle?
It is the regency period, never a young woman on the shelf or not could have been allowed to go out with a gentleman without someone acting as a chaperone.
The main characters are nice persons, Richard, after some years of wandering among the London society, finds himself bored and looking for giving a true meaning to his life.
Victoria is herself lost, her upbringing made her a powerful weapon but her heart is confused on how combining spying and a family life outside hers. She has so many uncertainties, when her job requires self-confidence.
So when they partner, they also bring focus on themselves and those around them.

I loved the idea and the relationship between the different Darings, each has its own strong personality. But the more the story progressed, the more I had doubts about Victoria, for the eldest and supposed strongest, she was quickly unsettled and lacking reactions. And I am not fond of women with wobbling knees when around handsome men. For all her training, she lacked a bit of strength to control her own feelings. Sure, nobody is perfect, and flaws help to render a character more realistic, I would have preferred her less emotional and perturbed when around Richard, more focused on her mission.
I am very much interested in her sisters’ and brother’s evolution, they all sound a great group of very various and vivid personalities.

In all, it was an entertaining read with a suspenseful background and a bunch of colorful characters.

Wowza! To say this was an entertaining story is putting it mildly! Lynn Winchester has pulled out all the stops to start a new series with the Daring family that will keep us anxiously awaiting for the next story in the series!
An unconventional heroine, Lady Victoria Daring (an apt name must I say!) had grown up in China where her father was a diplomat. He had wanted all of his six children to learn something "useful." So when each was old enough he employed masters in various specialities to instruct them in everything from languages to kung fu, throwing daggers and acting. What an upbringing!
Their mother was anxious for Vic to get to England and have her debut, to find a husband. Vic herself felt a longing to experience more...
When their father recieved the missive from the Prince Regent that he needed their "skills" for Crown business, the adventure begins for the Daring's and this one is for Vic!
On her first mission she is posing as a maid at a party to find out information needed by her superiors. Anxious not to mess up, of course she runs into a very handsome gentleman, Richard, Viscount Ganwy. Well he is intrigued right away in looking at the maid, who seemed a bit out of place and had the most amazing eyes!
Needless to say he sees through her disguise and the adventure begins!! I truly loved this story and cannot wait for more!! Thanks for NetGallery and the fabulous Entangled Publishing!

The first in a new series & a refreshing read, the heroine Vic is a delight & somewhat different to the run of the mill Regency belle, I hope the other Daring siblings have their stories. It was a breathe of fresh air & I thoroughly enjoyed my first book by the author – it certainly won’t be my last. Intriguing characters & a story that drew me in from the beginning & held me captivated until the last page
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

This was a nice read, the plot was great and the suspenseful element of the book as the truths were revealed to everyone in the story was pretty interesting. The romance between Victoria and Richard was charming, witty and delightful. I also liked the author's writing style, but the one thing that i found a little trying was that the pace of the book was very slow, but overrall it was a good story and i recommend to romance readers that love a good spy story. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and all the opinions that are expressed here are my own.

A difficult book for me to rate. On one hand it was very well written and on the other hand, I didn't believe a word of Victoria training as a spy for the crown in China -. (as had all her siblings as well, apparently) - then working as an active spy in London. This is the Regency and spying was not something the English really did, especially a well bred woman, according to the history of the period. So therefore, you have to take this story as intended, with a grain of salt - a pure work of fiction and entertainment. I'm also not a great lover of spy stories, unfortunately, historical or otherwise. Apart from that, I did feel as if I were in the Regency period re other historical details - dress, carriages, etc. Vic and her siblings were bubbly, fun, modern etc, a reflection of young women in today's world. There is lots of page time given over to family in this story.

The main plot begins in April 1817 London after the earl's family moves back from China in October 1816 - not sure how long the journey would have taken back then, especially in a northern winter, so the travel time line seems pretty dicey to me.

The book opens with a chapter filled with siblings and other characters that fairly make your head spin. I don't really like to be bombarded with so many characters at the beginning, so I assume this was done on purpose and all characters will have a book eventually. Vic/Victoria is posing as a maid at a ball to try and find out 'information'. - what sort we don't know. She breaks into the owners' study and is secretly followed by dashing and bored Lord Richard, who literally bumped into her earlier. He finds himself fascinated with her, even though she's a 'maid'. He is intrigued as to the reason she is in the study in the first place and starts wondering all kinds of things - he is bored, you know...

A few days later, he and his brother pass her family on the street. They are introduced, and as a result, Richard figures out who Victoria really is - even though she isn't wearing a red wig any more and her name is different. LOL. 👩‍🦰👩‍🦱 Meanwhile, she wonders how he knows it's her... 🙄 Their budding attraction towards each other is constantly referred to throughout the following chapters via internal monologue - especially Richards'.. To Victoria, he is that 'dratted' man. But she's intrigued, none the less.

Query - Richard is introduced as a Viscount in chapter three. His brother is a Duke... So, are they half siblings? Then he is referred to as Lord Richard, which is correct if he isn't a peer in his own right.

There are chapters thrown in using the POV of a criminal? drug addict? bad guy?

Overview.:- If you like lots of characters overtaking scenes, lots of action and intrigue, strong modern Regency kick ass heroines who are bold and know Chinese martial arts, then this book is for you. If you like traditional Regencies that reflect true life in which the period of the book is set, then maybe this one isn't for you. The writing is good and the book entertains for sure. My thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the gift of the e-arc in return for my honest opinion.

A Lady Never Tells is the first book in the Women of Daring series by Lynn Winchester.

The plot of the book was intriguing and unlike any that I had come across before. The Darings who despite being English live in China. The daughters have been taught Kung Fu and their skills are so honed they work with their brother and father for the Crown as spies. They have been called back to England to discover the person/people behind an Opium ring. This book centres on Lady Victoria Daring although the whole family plays a part.

Richard Downing is a Viscount, he's enjoyed his hay day, his cavorting etc and he is bored with life. All that changes when he runs into a maid, literally, at a party and then follows her to make sure she is OK. He is shocked when he discovers her up to apparently no good when she picks a lock to a study and sneaks in. He catches her but she manages to escape but not before he is mesmerised by her eyes and the intrigue and excitement she has just brought into his boring life. When he meets Victoria at a ball and recognises her eyes he is even more intrigued and demands answers as to why she was dressed as a maid and what she was up to.

That is how they meet, and the rest I will not go into because I don't want to give any spoilers. I will, however, say that during the course of the story they end up helping each other, and fighting a strong attraction at the same time. One that for various reasons shouldn't be allowed to come to fruition.

There is danger, mystery, intrigue, murder, kidnapping, and just about the necessary romance to make this a romantic suspense book. I loved Richard's character, he was such a sweetheart, but I can't help but wonder how easily he accepted things that were so out of the norm. There were some other things during the story that I found a little unbelievable too.

The only other negative I want to mention is that because of all the Kung Fu and the forwardness of the women, also the dialogue between characters, I forgot that I was reading a Regency romance sometimes. I was disappointed that despite the good plot and the main characters I found myself pushing myself to finish the story. It's a shame really because I really did like the sound it when I read its blurb.

Would I recommend this book, hmm, I guess it depends on how fussy you are for detail. If you just love a good spy story with a bit of romance and don't mind if things seem a bit out of sync with the time period, then yes. If you are pickier and like 100% accuracy then no, not so much.

This is a story about a family that has been training to go into service to the king their entire lives. The eldest daughter Victoria is on her first mission when she bumps into trouble. Richard is a viscount that can’t get a girl out of his mind. These two have sparks and I enjoyed the read a great deal. I cannot wait for more from this author.

A Lady Never Tells by Lynn Winchester is Book 1 in a new series, "Women of Daring", and what a beginning.
I was intrigued and held spellbound from the first page. The Daring siblings are a group of agents in the service of the The Darings are in the service of the Prince Regent, to combat enemies of the crown. A Regency Historical Romance set in 1817, from Zhejiang, China to London, where they carry out matters of Imperial espionage.
Well written and well excuted. The characters are colorful, charming, and engaging. The storyline is unpredictable, intriguing, adventurous, captivating and original for sure. Ms. Winchester has once again keep this reader turning pages, although, I did find in spots where the story got a bit confusing, but for the most part this is a great beginning to a new series. However, Be aware that to me not all of my questions were answered, maybe, leaving for the next book.

Meet and Follow,
Victoria Daring and Richard Downing, Viscount Ganwyd on their journey to a HEA.

Victoria works for the Home Office, as part of "Operation Imperial Twilight", her mission, is to search the home of Malcolm Egerdon, the Earl of Banebridge, but she's interrupted by Richard.
This story has plenty of spies, secrets, secret identities, danger, intrigue, mystery, suspense, sensual tension and romance to keep readers reading, with a HEA.
I found A LADY NEVER TELLS to be an enjoyable, entertaining and satisfying read. Strongly recommended for fans of Regency, spies, mystery, intrigue, historical romance and much more. A delightful read.

Hmmm...where to begin.
To say that Ms. Winchester has stepped out of her "norm" with these characters is a YES. I found the Daring family intriguing in the fact that they were "born for this". The children of the Daring family are all trained to do amazing spy/assassin things in the Orient. (Imaginative) They get called back to London by the Crown to use their "special skills" and poor Victoria pretty much feels that is all they are or ever will be. As the plot unfolds, still not giving away the villain of course as this is part of a series, Victoria falls for Richard Downing.
I had never read a period piece quite like this before and it was not my normal reading material. BUT I have always enjoyed this authors writing so I thought WHY NOT. With that being said, I rather enjoyed this spy/mystery/love spin of a tale. No it didn't have all the mushiness that a lot of other books have but not all writers need to do that and I would feel great about letting one of my YA readers have this book. I feel that if you are into this sort of material that you won't feel that the pace is slow, I didn't, so make sure that you are into the mystery/spy thing. Don't forget a kick butt Heroine cause they will definitely be in this series aplenty.
I also read a review where the 'believability' part was questionable. I thought that was the point of books and imaginations, anything was possible....
I think this was well written, worth my time and I would read more in the series.
I received a copy for my honest review and that's what I've given!

This novel was an enjoyable read, with a kick-ass heroine. Lady Victoria Daring has lived in China with her family all her life until the are called back to England to work for His Majesty’s personal spy network. Victoria is a talented fighter as well as a master of disguise. Lord Richard Downing, a viscount, is bored with his life and with some of the friends he has. While attending an event, he comes across a maid with the most astounding blue eyes that he cannot forget. When he discovers it is Victoria, he sees her as someone who does not conform to the typical debutante and wants to know her. Victoria is shocked to discover someone has seen through her disguises, yet cannot help but be intrigued by Richard, but he is part of her list of suspects. Richard becomes more entangled with Victoria and her family, trying to discover who is responsible for the attacks going on within the city. Their attraction grows and develops in love, but Victoria cannot let Richard be involved with her dangerous life style. Victoria will do anything to keep Richard safe, even from herself.

Absolutely fabulous book! I read Regency romance - around 5 books a week. I found Winchester’s A Lady Never Tells to be wonderfully creative and refreshing. I loved her heroine Victoria Daring. Winchester infuses some humor into her intrigue and romance. And she brings to life a romantic swoon-worthy hero in Richard Downing. “Cursing under her breath, she looked up into the face of a man who couldn’t possibly be of earth… His striking green and gold eyes flashed with self-reproach, but that disappeared quickly, a look of shock rising up to fill his gaze with a brightness that made her heart thud. Dark brows arched to disappear behind a dashing fall of blond locks. And his lips...the bottom one fuller than the top, they quirked into a lopsided smile that made her belly flip.” The Darings are my new favorites. Crossing my fingers that the next book will be about another Daring adventure. I was given a copy of this book.

I was so engrossed in this story I did not want to put it down.
This story was about Victoria (Vic) and Richard and how their relationship grows. But this book is also about Vic’s family. Vic and her family (4 sisters and a brother) have been trained since they were young to be spies for the Government. They have been taught to fight – with and without weapons, how to blend in society so they can find out information. Richard runs into Victoria while she was on an assignment, and he is intrigue by her. He then runs into her again, dressed as herself, and he knows it is the same person, because he is still intrigue by her. This an also a very clean romance story.
This is the first time I have read a book by this author, and it will not be the last. I feel this book was written well. I hope Lynn Winchester will write books on the rest of Victoria’s siblings.

I received a copy of this book thru NetGalley, with no obligation to review.

Reviewed on my blog, Becky on Books, on 10/20/19.

I am such a sucker for spy stories, it is not even funny. Add in an entire family of spies, the eldest child of which has been trained in martial arts her whole life and can practically kill bad guys with one hand tied behind her back? I. Am. So. There!

I loved Victoria and Richard's story. I adored how he saw everything about her as a strength that Vic saw as a liability, and that he didn't have any qualms about bowing to her expertise. They are absolutely wonderful together, and I can't wait to see more of them as all of the Daring women (so many sisters! Though I hope their brother gets a book too...) work to bring down the criminal enterprise that is still at large at the end of the book.

Victoria is a fighting machine built to do the work of the Crown. She is daring and a Daring. She is strong focused and determined. Richard is trying to find purpose in his life when he meets the enigmatic Victoria. He is able to see through her disguise and the beautiful person she is.

This is the start of a great series. The characters are wonderful. The Daring family is like a group of super heroes. The remind me of the characters in the Incredibles movie. They are vibrant, spunky and fun. The story is filled with intrigue as they try to solve the problems facing their investigation. It is also a love story between Victoria and Richard. It is about building a relationship and accepting the person for who they truly are. It is about becoming a unit and working towards a unified goal. I can’t wait to see how the series will unfold.

DNF at 30%

Was intrigued by the premise but i was bored :/
Vic is supposed to be this super badass spy but she makes SO MANY MISTAKES that it completely discredited her 20 years of training and the ML is this bored aristocrat who is intrigued by the heroine because she broke the monotony of his life - it is said that he’s bored with society at least a million times
Very love at first sight and the ML especially becomes obsessed with her but not in a good way ?? I dont how to explain but i dont like him 😅

DNF. I think this is just a case of wrong time for a mood reader. Historical romance hasn’t been working for me lately. I decided to give this a shot because the premise sounds great but it isn’t the right time and I decided to DNF. Thank you Entangled and Netgalley for the advance reading copy.

I received a free copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review. For the most part I did like this book. Victoria and her siblings have lived in China their entire lives. Under their father, an ambassador, guidance they have trained in skills that could make them valuable to the Crown. Now that they have been called back to London, they are tasked with solving a mystery. While I am someone who is able to suspend her disbelief when reading or watching a movie, this book seemed ridiculous at several points. Most importantly the idea of a family trained from childhood to be spies and the skills they seem to posses. That issue aside the book was entertaining. After running into Victoria at a party where she is dressed as a maid, Richard is determined to discover the truth. I would be open to checking out the next book in the series. 3.5 stars.

Number of titles I have read by this author: 1

Love story speed: Slowish burn

Relationship dynamics: The Gentle Lord (H) / Tje Kung Fu Proficient Spy (h)

Sexual content: None. Kissing and mild fondling only.

Triggers: Violence; violent death; drug use (opium dens); heroine who is usually independent and adept, but who becomes a bumbler as soon as an attractive man appears

Grammar/Editing: This ARC had some typos, incorrect word usage and comma splices

Review: For any reader who does not appreciate long descriptions of spy training (in this case, Kung Fu training) and long, very detailed introductions to characters (protagonists and villains alike), this book will seem incredibly slow paced. The author also spends a great deal of time in the point of view of the villain, which won’t be to every reader’s taste. It is clear that a great deal of research went into both the setting and the skills displayed throughout the novel, but an unfortunate typo has turned Gunter’s Tea Shoppe into Gunther’s Tea Shoppe, which detracts from the reader’s perception of the quality of the research.

Richard and Victoria are a cute couple with a slowly developing relationship – she definitely has to let him grow on her. I did find, however, that certain of their unchaperoned activities were unlikely to have been acceptable to society in the historical setting. Richard has a bit of a changeable character: he is gentle and sensitive to people’s feelings, but also wants the heroine to “beg” for things and to submit to him. He is also intensely focused on the heroine from the beginning of their acquaintance. I did not find him to be the most engaging hero, but neither was he abhorrent. Victoria is a well-trained fighting and spying machine (although she overestimates some of her skills, like that of disguises). She is also a bit changeable. For most of the book, she wants nothing more than to serve king and country, but then suddenly cries at the thought of never being married, which hadn’t ever bothered her until that point in the story. The supporting characters in this novel are very well developed – in some cases, like the villain, to the point of unnecessary repetition. That being said, I fully intend to look into the second book in the series when it comes out and see if it is of sufficient interest to continue the series.

Princess Bride quote version: “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means” – Inigo Montoya

This book was received as an ARC from the Author, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own

Lynn Winchester new novel, A Lady Never Tells, is the first installment in a brand new Regency Series. Ms. Winchester has written an absolutely charming and enchanting novel.

Victoria {Vic} Daring, is not your typical lady of the Regency period, and her family’s business is very unconventional to say the least.
Trained in espionage and intrigue. All of Darings from father and her charming sisters Honoria and Verity, are part of a spy network trying to reveal the men or women hiding behind masks in the House of Cards Society.
Their mission, spy on people responsible for smuggling and any crimes against the Crown of England.
Victoria is a master in disguises for the Imperial Espionage Home Office. A Historical Romance set in 1817, from Zhejiang, China and quickly moves to London where she and her siblings have taken a position, as part of "Operation Imperial Twilight"

During one of those missions, she is almost discovered by a dashing viscount named Richard Downing. Meeting Richard only complicates things. While trying to gather gather evidence, Richard is becoming an obstacle. More importantly his family is on list of people to be investigated.
Victoria has made a definite impression. She is not an ordinary lady of high birth, she enjoys fencing and she is full of surprises. How will Richard react when if out about Victoria double life.

Ms Winchester, delivers a fast-paced, amusing, and well-written read here that had the perfect mix of humour, romantic moments, and suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the relationship between Victoria and Richard grow and thought that they the had great chemistry. The supporting cast was also great and complimented the dynamics of the storyline extremely well.
The book is both Intriguing, and entertaining , a fabulous representation of a storyline.

The author has set up the creative ending that is perfect for the next in the series.
I adored this extremely engrossing, enjoyable & entertaining book right from the very start and had me engaged and at some parts laughing. Victoria is an unforgettable heroine and I excited to read the next in this captivating delightful series.
