Inarticulate Longings explores the contradictions of a social agenda for women that promoted both traditional roles and the promises of a growing consumer culture by examining the advertising industry in the early 20th century.
Extraordinarily fascinating look at the American woman of the early twentieth century as seen on, behind, and in front of the pages of one of the most popular women's magazines of the era, the Ladies' Home Journal. The breadth and depth of research undertaken by Scanlon is impressive, yet it is her deftness in drawing interesting conclusions and connecting them to broader issues of the Progressive era that make this a truly engaging read.
Really good read - interesting look at early 20th Century advertising and how it affected women. Some of the advertising campaigns and tricks that we still see today are outlined here; very entertaining!
