Everything was going well with Adam becoming a star student. That was until The Finals started to appear on the horizon and his grades inexplicably fell away. Failure was not an option yet it did not seem easily avoided. And why was the most desperately sad specimen in the academy suddenly beginning to communicate with him?
Being Absent Without Learning was sometimes the only escape from the draconian justice that was meted out by The Citadel. Adam found himself with an impossible choice: stay and risk failure, or run for the safety of the world of water outside of the walls.
Excellent storytelling that is succinct. The action moved forward at a constant pace that kept me turning page after page. The author gives just enough information to understand the characters without bogging the reader down. There are enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing without getting lost. The ending leaves open an opportunity for another book. I hope there will be one because I want to know what happens next.
When one mentions the term ‘dystopian novel’ the chances are two books will come to your mind, ‘A Brave New World’ by Aldous Huxley and ‘1984’ by George Orwell. You can now add a third one to this list: ‘AWOL’ By Mike Evans. The book was a real surprise to me, it is very well written and eloquent with an interesting and intense dynamic between the various characters. Throughout the novel, the author tackles deep topics such as the pressure to conform, education system, freedom, danger, courage, love, and friendship.
What stood out for me was that in a dystopian society where everything is controlled, intelligence and creativity are the ‘No 1 Public Enemy’. I also loved the fact that the few female characters portrayed in the book epitomized courage and leadership accompanied with a zest of ‘sensory delights’ and attractiveness. I was also moved by the library scene and Adam’s wonder at beauty of seeing books for the first time. Amongst all the books, the one that captures his attention is the ‘Diary of Ann Frank.’ Not in the book, but my favorite quote from Ann Frank is: “How wonderful it is that nobody needs to wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
Don’t ‘wait a single moment’ to read AWOL, it’s a great read!
A real page turner, it had me hooked from the first chapter. Echoes of Romeo and Juliet with a touch of what our future world could hold... let’s hope not! A superbly well crafted novel from start to finish.
