Fallen: The Story of a School Shooter

Rate this book

"A thorough, well researched, and gripping account of the Parkland tragedy with an ending that will offer solace and comfort to all."

In the style of Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons, “Fallen” is a chilling expose of the life of Nikolas Cruz, a youth troubled since his earliest childhood.  Over a year’s worth of investigated facts are masterfully weaved together into a compelling drama revealing the depths of not only Cruz’s life but also of the cowardly inaction by so many in the bureaucracies surrounding him that could have stopped this tragedy from happening.

Angels and Dark Angels are used to explore the mystery of good versus evil in the story. As it progresses, you will understand why.

Near the end, during the 11 long minutes of the shooting, time seems to stand still as you find yourself inside the building, witnessing not only the tragedy but also the heroic actions of many. Sadly, you will also witness the selfish actions of not one, but numerous deputies and school personnel who allowed so many to perish.

The story then moves from the darkness of that day to a marvelous dawn with an ending you never imagined and one you will never forget.

Important Note to Readers:  There is an abridged version of this book called "Parkland"  Parkland's subplot of the Angels/Demons dimension of the story is less extensive and is about 10% shorter.

I don't know why but I always want to know why mass shooters want to do what they did. It's something I've been curious about since I was in middle school. What has to go off in your brain to go to a school and start shooting people? This shooter is something I'll have to do some research about because even though I remember it happening I don't exactly know a lot about the details. The one thing I'm going to have to really look into is that this book made it seem like no one really tried hard enough to help/stop the Cruz kid. Everyone just brushed it off as teenage angst. The one thing I liked but also kind of disliked is the good angel/bad angel perspective. I'll definitely have to check out the other books on this! Thank you to netgalley for a copy of this book!

This was really good. When I first saw this I immediately thought of Rage by Stephen King and had to read it. I enjoyed the author's reimagining of what happened. I'm going to have to read the rest of these. The angels and demons remind me strongly of the ones in the Bobby Dollar series by Tad Williams. I loved how the author really builds it up.

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC

Tragedy

I really enjoyed reading this book. It’s a fiction. However, are some of us influenced by the other side. My heart went out to Nikolas. Because of his inner battle with the demonic, Tira. There was no escaping her. I liked how the light prevailed. I really enjoyed reading this book and it held my attention. It’s a quick read and a good read.

Having been offered this book by the author, D.P. Convay, I was delighted and keen to read the book, Angels being of particular interest to me. Having read the book, it far exceeded my expectations by the intriguing story line, combining both fact and fiction. Every spare moment found me eagerly delving back into the story eager to know more.

"Fallen" gives the gripping and terrifying account of the tragic school shootings at the Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, 14th Feb 2018, killing and wounding a large number of students and teachers. No doubt many wonder what makes someone take such drastic action, and reading this book certainly gives insight on what is a heartless crime.

Nikolas Cruz, comes from a very troubled background, never knowing his birth parents, raised by foster parents who try their best to give him a good start in life. However Nikolas' behaviour gives rise to major concern, making him into a loner bereft of friends, and getting into constant trouble at school. A vicious cycle of dire consequences which does little to change his unruly behaviour.

The lengthy research by the author of these true events brings home many realisations. The red flags of Nikolas'increasingly aggressive and harmful behaviour continually overlooked or shrugged off. It is shocking at the amount of times the Deputies were called to the home without any action taken to stem the problem. It is infuriating to read of how the mother makes excuses to cover for Nicolas' many misdeeds, trying to molly coddle the boy. Even spoiling him to a degree in the hope bribes would do the trick. That of course, never works, just succeeds in exasperating the very behaviour she is trying to eradicate. It is incomprehensible how lacking in Security the school was, the incompetence of the Deputies and other personnel. The ease with which the boy was able to just walk into the school beggars belief!. The moments leading up to the shooting is described in a way that one is transported to that moment in time, giving rise to a myriad of emotions. The suspense along with anticipation causes one to read with bated breathe as to what would transpire next. It is with incredible feeling to see how, in spite of the danger, the various acts of selfless heroism becoming apparent.

To then intertwine such horrific reality to blend in with a fictional twist reveals the expertise and skill of the author. It is fascinating to see the battle between good and evil, how Angels play their part in Nikolas' life, from his birth to the end. Absolutely loved the touching romance between the good Angel Jordan and dark Angel Sansa. How it transpires and the twist it takes shows clearly just what a brilliant author, D.P Convay is.

What did amuse me quite a bit, was to read "President Trump on looking at the pictures of the many shot victims, had a tear in his eye, overwhelmed by the senseless tragedy" and " he took a Kleenex and dried his eyes". I do have a vivid imagination but this picture somehow eludes me. The fact that there are still no changes to the ownership of guns in America speaks volumes of Trump's convictions! Why children are allowed to own BB guns remains incomprehensible. Every shooting is a wake up call but is it any wonder people remain blind when their leaders have no intention to address something so vital to human life!

I feel very privileged for receiving such an awesome book and have since purchased a series of his books. No doubt they are the start of many more I shall be checking out and purchasing. My thanks to the author for this book Via Voracious Readers. (MargueriteK)
