‘SENESCENCE’ – (Latin for biological ageing) is a magic carpet ride through time. Thanks to current progress in genetic engineering, medical science and technology we are on the brink of an extraordinary transformation heading vertically into a new odyssey. Pivotal breakthroughs rewrite our natural biology and change life as we know it along with artificial intelligence, machine innovations and space travel. This futuristic ‘protopia’ scrutinizes millennia of arrested development whilst celebrating moments of inspired genius. In AD2049 Commander Jenna Morton (a designer baby destined to become an astronaut) leads a challenging mission to search for microbial life on Europa, Jupiter’s largest Moon. We travel through space and time confronted by the past and future whilst constantly searching for the answer to the fundamental question, ‘are we alone in the universe’?
My hobbies include reading and researching state of the art science, technology, and space. I enjoy taking time to imagine how life will be in the future as a result of the exponential cross-sector breakthroughs in recent decades. The world is moving from a scarcity economy into a new era of plenty with improvements in our health and wellbeing.
Being alive in this era with the potential to make a better world and off-world footprint is becoming a reality. We are facing a pivot moment in our protracted and often arrested development; because it is happening so fast many remainl unaware of the improvements which are slowly trickling through into the social fabric, one drip at a time. Even a few decades from now the transformations will be increasingly visible everywhere.
The key thing to remember is that knowledge and sharing is the smart way forward: the future is bright..!
One giant leap into the future of humankind via the cosmos through the vessel of science that makes for a fascinating read!
Denver Scott delivers a deep dive look into the future of human life where the line between science and fiction merge flawlessly. The science element takes centre stage and carries the presence of a main character consistently throughout what is a truly fascinating read.
Senescence covers a lot of ground (or space) and initially focuses on a futuristic world of extremes in both medical advances and the potential threats there are to humanity. From the eventual hazards of ‘space junk’, eradicating illness and even the future of genetics, all of the directions this book takes a reader on come from mostly real scenarios that are backed up with science which is then extended further – it’s a unique concept and style that keeps the story moving while also proving that the author’s imagination and knowledge go hand in hand. Creativity meets realism with terminology that’s both new and familiar such as ‘Histolog’ and ‘VIP’ – Vitally Improved Persona, none of which feel like fiction at all.
Much of each chapter is made up of an explanation or story that surrounds the subject matter in what is an unlimited guided tour into the future where attention to detail is at the very forefront. We meet characters who are on that journey much like us. Commander Jenna Morton is a genetically perfected human creation and along with her crew are on a pioneering voyage of discovery. It is on that voyage that we experience these wide range of subjects from our own planet’s nature/history to it’s future along with humankind, civilisations, terraforming planets, deep space travel and even time travel.
Even though I am more on the layman level of understanding, not once did I feel out of my depth as the writing style is accessible to any reader of the curious persuasion, especially those interested in the cosmos. This is a book that celebrates humankind and science that will stir your imagination while also being informative.
Senescence was recommended to me by a friend. She knew I was not a true lover of Sci Fi .... boy am I now..... amazing, absolutely amazing read. Thought provoking and actually keeps me awake at night. Brilliant.
An all-encompassing science fiction literary work, including fantastic interplanetary adventures in an appealing biotechnological tenor with DNA-modified space heroes looking for extra-terrestrial life. It's a fabulously-written and deeply engaging journey about our future as a species. In short, an unmissable read for any serious sci-fi enthusiast out there!
I picked up Senescence after being intrigued by the sci-fi plot. I was especially interested in the fact that it delved into biological science, as well as the future of this field once future technology, such as AI, will be widespread. I am a scientist by day, as I have said previously on this site. For this reason, scientific sci-fi interests me deeply. I have to admit it is hard to find science fiction books that I like since I am quite picky and I don't like fantasy books. The science fiction I like will be able to astonish and amaze me, while I think hard and long about the knowledge we as humans have reached and that which we lack. Senescence was wonderful in all senses and it was the perfect scientific science fiction book. I hope you'll stick around to discover more about this book, and maybe I could even convince you to give it a chance. This book is truly a journey through time. The main plot deals with the space adventures of neo-humans. They are genetically engineered to have no illnesses and defy ageing, with modifications that also equips them with incredible intellectual and emotional intelligence abilities. The neo-human astronauts also have specific characteristics that make their bodies more apt to live far away from planet Earth. The human species had gone through a scientific revolution a century or so earlier, which the book describes in detail, and since then the exploration and inhabitation of other planets had become more widespread. The purpose of these travels is to both find alternative homes and to investigate whether there is any life in the rest of the universe. Neo-humans love planet Earth, despite their travels and having seen the supposedly "greener grass". They often reminisce of the past and are thankful of all the steps and hurdles that the human race has overcome to allow them to be alive in the present moment. Senescence is written in a surprisingly simple and accessible way despite the complex scientific concepts and ideas that it sometimes deals with. The plot, as well as all the musings about how the future will play out, are super interesting and tantalising. I would say that the main themes of this book are space travel, future scientific advances and interpersonal relationships. The three themes mesh perfectly and make this book appealing for all types of sci-fi aficionados. Including me, only interested in knowing how the author imagines that science will develop in the not-so-distant future. In conclusion, this book is an astonishing work that would be perfect for anyone interested in knowing about the future possibilities of our planet and species. I truly enjoyed reading this book. The plot and concepts sparked my imagination about past, present and future eras and human lives. Lastly, the book has made me reflect and think even when I wasn't reading it, which is a very good sign.
