*Some Spoilers*
Eleanor is off to college! Can you believe it? Me neither.
But she came home for her cousin's 4th birthday party, and we listened to this on the ride there and back. It was almost perfect timing. And I'll say: what a blast from the past! The book opens with Sachar saying how he wrote the first book 40 years ago, and that you should really read those first three first, and then wait 40 years, and then read this one. ...And that's almost exactly what I did. And that's close to what Eleanor did - but she didn't wait the full 40 years.
So, anyway - I know she's busy studying and what not. Hanging out with friends. Going to the Wildcat or whatever. But she's agreed to review this with me over the phone.
...Calling her now!
Dad: Eleanor are you there?
Eleanor: YEAH! I couldn't hear you for a second! Where are you?
Dad: I'm in the dining room!
Eleanor: Yeah. You were fading in and out for a second, so I wasn't sure. ...Typing sounds a lot different over the phone.
Dad: Do you want me to read you what I have so far?
El: Sure.
Dad: (Reads it...)
El: Yeah, that whole drive there and back felt a little like a time machine. I was only there for such a short time, and everything seemed just the way it was before I went to college.
Dad: Yeah. It's almost like nothing had changed.
El: Yeah.
Dad: I'm glad. I'm not sure when we notice changes... but they show up eventually.
El: Well, there were a lot of changes too. For instance, it was weird only being home for a weekend.
Dad: No. Yeah. I know what you mean. What did you think about the book?
El: I thought it was really good! But I think that the third one is still my favorite.
Dad: Yeah, me too. I loved that one. But hey: I just thought of something.
El: What?
Dad: That book is a little bit like you coming home from college. It's been forever since we last heard from Wayside... and then: we were there, and it was like nothing had changed!
El: Huh. Yeah. You're right. Didn't think of that, before.
Dad: Yeah. Mrs. Jewels is still teaching on the 30th floor. Louis is still the Yard Teacher. Mrs. Zarves is still not teaching on the 19th floor, because there still is no 19th floor, and so there still is no Mrs. Zarves. ...Just like the good old days.
El: Yeah, that was the one thing that surprised me about that book, actually.
Dad: What's that?
El: Mrs. Zarves wasn't in chapter 19 at all.
Dad: True, true. But at least she DID show up. ...I mean... spoiler, lol.
El: I thought the whole "collecting a million of something" was interesting. Especially since they decided to do nail clippings. I trimmed my nails yesterday and thought about Wayside the whole time.
Dad: Gwen and mom would have been really grossed out by some of that.
El: Heh! No kidding! And maybe Poppy, too!
Dad: I guess it's good we didn't listen to it on the way down to Florida.
El: Yeah. I'm afraid that would have turned them off from the rest of the books.
Dad: I thought they already read them.
El: Yeah, but I'm afraid that when they remember all of Wayside, they'd just remember that little part.
Dad: Yeah, I see that. You're studying psychology now - so it's like... one traumatic event can take over all the memories of that thing. The trauma of toenails.
El: Hehheh! You know what I think my favorite parts of the book were, though?
Dad: What's that?
El: The parts with Dr. Pickel. ...Or Dr. Pickle.
Dad: Yeah. Those WERE good. Let's talk about them, but I also want to mention the parts with Mr. Kidswatter being with Dr. Pickel, but we weren't supposed to know who the author was talking about it... but he didn't hide it very well.
El (laughing): It was like when you try to hide a name, but you say something like, "I'm not going to say who it is, but her name starts with an 'M' and rhymes with 'Bom.'"
Dad: I do that a lot, I think. (Laughing)
El: I thought the whole Oppositosis was really funny - and that whole thing of how it was all done in flashbacks.
Dad: Yeah, I thought that was clever, too.
El: And who knew that the mirror would be the key to the hypnosis. Spoiler alert!
Dad: Geeeeez. I'll have to put spoiler tags on this whole review!!!!
El: THIS WHOLE REVIEW IS JUST ONE BIG SPOILER!!!
Dad: Here's a spoiler: you're going to love this book. It was nice to have a comfort read while taking you back to college.
El: It really was. Now I kindof want to go back and reread all the books - including this one.
Dad: Me too. Have fun studying tonight.
El: I'm done studying for the day.
