Burns Brothers #1

Alpha's Surprise Baby

Rate this book

Declan Burns is content with his life, well as content as you can be when you turn thirty-five and have no alpha or pups on the horizon.

He’s managed to get everything else in his life under control... everything but his heats that is.

Colten’s always had a crush on his dad’s older omega friend. There was just something about the man that called to him, and it was only getting worse. His scent was driving Colt’s wolf crazy.

Fated mated are a thing of the past, at least so he’s been told, but his wolf knows what he wants, and that’s Declan.

What happens when these two are thrown together and Declan’s heat makes it hard for them to resist each other?

Can they figure out their bond before it’s too late, or will outside forces and their own stubbornness keep them from the most precious gift the fates could give?

Alpha's Surprise Baby is book one of the Burns Brothers Series. It contains a grumpy omega who turns soft, a young alpha with heart and lots of knotty fun. No cheating and a HEA that's sweet as small town pie.

The writing in this was absolutely horrible.
I did like the guys so that was a plus, but the writing constantly pulled me out of the story.

And I wasn't a fan of the conflict. Declan really tired me with his insecurities to the point where he broke up with Colton.

I don't think I should read the rest of the books.

Meh...

***2.5 stars***

Not much to the story and no world building. Character development and the chemistry between Declan and Colten is meh. So, yeah a lot of skimming through the sexy parts. The story honestly was just okay.

New to me author. This is a contemporary mpreg story with an age gap. Main characters are Omega Declan aged 35 and Alpha Colton ages 21. I had no real connection to the main characters.

Adorable story. Could’ve used a little more editing but it wasn’t too bad. I’m a total sucker for Mpreg sooo!

This is a cute fated mates romance.
At 35,omega Declan is close to giving up his dreams of ever finding his mate. So you can imagine his astonishment when, during a surprise heat,he finds him...but it's Colten,a too much younger alpha.

Colten and Declan are endearing, especially the older omega, desperately in love and pregnant. He's convinced that tying Colten to himself would only ruin his life, and the poor omega is ready to sacrifice his happiness so that his alpha could have a brighter future as a lawyer.

And isn't it wonderful that what Colten really needs are his omega and their babies?

I really had fun reading Alpha's Surprise Baby .

Disappointing

This had possibilities. The problem is there is no story just a plot outline. The book is more a abstract of where the story will start, grow and end. There is no depth. The characters have no depth, no life.

I loved Colten so much but Declan completely ruined this book for me. He was too old to be acting the way he was. He pushed Colten away for literally the entire book!!! He was soo damn annoying. I predicted every time he was going to push him away cause that’s all he did!! He found his fated mate which is so rare it’s not even mentioned anymore but thinks he’s too old for Colten so he’s going to ignore it. He’s been wanting to have a child for so long and didn’t think he would be able to have one and once he gets pregnant his first response was that he was getting rid of it because again, he thinks he’s too old for Colten and doesn’t want to ruin his life. He frustrated me so much. All the while Colten literally chases this man because THEY ARE FATED MATES.

Also eff Colten’s dad, Frank. The description made it seem like him and Declan were besties but Declan was basically just Colten’s dad’s mechanic. I mean he even called him by his last name, Mr. Whatever his name was. Frank disowned Colten and then came back in the epilogue wanting to see his grandkids without even saying sorry and they just folded!! AND this was a shifter book? There was no shifting going on!!! It was mentioned one time that Colten went on a run and that’s it!! Might as well just made his a non shifting omegaverse because a shifter book this was not!!!

It was a short nice little read. I feel that Dalton’s father angry and mean words was not really necessary. I I also feel like Declan‘s friendship with his man was made more difficult by him himself personally than anybody else. I personally didn’t like his self doubt and his insecurities about something that was not even grace over. They talked about it over and over, and even gave him reassurance multiple times. I personally enjoy big age gaps and I enjoyed this one for that reason and I felt like it wasn’t an unreasonable age gap it was a nice, good age gap and their friendship/relationship was appropriate. It was two guys finding each other attractive and having a guy guy, loving relationship, not a parent type of relationship because honestly I don’t like those.

Declan is an older omega who feels he's past his prime and doesn't necessarily believe he'll ever find his mate. Colten is a young, college age alpha who's father is a friend of Declans and who's always felt some sort of pull towards Declan. When Colten runs into Declan, immediately he goes into heat
and surprise, a baby!
They struggle to make this relationship work. Declan feels as though he's a burden and would only ruin Coltens life with an unplanned pregnancy. Colten, for his part must convince Declan that he and their baby are worth fighting for and deserve a chance at happiness. Coltens father has an issue with their relationship and meddles because of old hurts and fears stemming from the loss of his husband. Ultimately Declan has to have faith in Colten and their fated mates status.

Alpha's Surprise Baby By Skyler Snow

Declan is a 35 year old omega who feels he's past his prime for finding his mate and having cubs.

Colton is in college studying to be an attorney and is home on summer break. He's always had a crush on his father's friend, but now he feels overwhelmed with the need to make Declan his.

While the story was well written and I liked both MC's it was a little on the boring side. There wasn't much excitement for what was going on or to see what was coming.

Enjoyable shifter read. It's refreshing to read a shifter book that isn't speedily in poorly written. That's not to say there aren't some stumbling blocks along the way. There is instalove but it's more or less will handle and for some reason the shared past between the two is ignored and that explored but overall the book is well written, the characters likeable and I'm dying to read the next book. Great potential and hopefully a new favorite author in a favorite genre!

This is an age gap, slightly grumpy/sunshine mpreg shifter romance. The shifter aspect is very minor.

The title made me lol, because these titles always do, but it gets the plot across!

There are frequent typos. Lacking apostrophes with possessive nouns or using apostrophes for plural nouns (a ton of this), sometimes a random word in a sentence that makes no sense, making a word incorrectly singular or plural, incorrect similarly spelled words like “brought” instead of “bought” or “fun” instead of “run,” etc. All fairly typical for independent/unedited books. Lots of stuff that Microsoft Word tends not to catch but a human editor should be able to.

The writing style is simple but on the more enjoyable side of middle range for the genre and for an unedited book. It was nothing fancy and a little awkward at times, but it was enjoyable enough. Also there were blessedly few epithets.

I really liked that the fated mates stuff wasn’t physically able to kick in until adulthood. As in, fated mates wouldn’t notice this about each other until both were adults and had “presented” as their a/b/o designation.

Declan was cool. He’s 35, the oldest of the 3 brothers, works his family’s farm, shy but not a pushover, and loves cars. He’s muscular, white, cis, has dark hair, green/hazel eyes, and stubble. It’s very rare that omegas in books are over 30 (hell, or over 23), the oldest of the family, like anything mechanical, are able to do any physical labor. I loved all of that about Declan! And on top of that he tried hard to be responsible but was also a person and had vulnerabilities. He wants a partner and a baby but likes his life enough that he can’t be too bothered to pursue either until fate intervenes.

Colton is around 21, a blonde, blue-eyed, an alpha, also muscular, cis, and white. He’s going to college. He’s the son of Frank, an old friend of Declan’s who is older than Declan by a few years. He’s a virgin who previously avoided sex to focus on his studies and prevent any unwanted pregnancies. Again, unlike fate intervenes. I did like that Colton could be read as demisexual or somewhere on the ace spectrum. He talks about how he’s sort of felt attractions but nothing strong enough to act on until Declan, who he has always liked (even platonically) forever.

I LOVED that Declan was at least cognizant of the fact that being with Colton could screw with Colton’s life plan because of their age difference and space difference. I in theory love a/b/o age gaps but so often when the alpha is older the omega just “doesn’t have a head for anything,” and when the omega is older they’re bizarrely incapable of taking care of themselves and have crushing self esteem issues. It’s scary common. I appreciated here that Declan was mostly his own person and did have actual talents and wasn’t dependent on Colton for everything. And he wanted Colton to be happy and do well. It also added some fun angst. Declan did have the standard “I’m too ancient at 35” thing that’s part and parcel for older male omega or reflex human women characters in romance. Which is stupid because people who can give birth can have kids into their 40s or even rarely 50s.

Anyway, despite some editing issues this was a fun book and I definitely want to read the next one.

Single Older Omega

Just read a really enjoyable set of books and I struck good again. This book has been sitting on my TBR pile since October 19th. This has been the longest election in the world and it kept me from my reading pleasure. This could have just as easily been titled The Omega's Surprise Baby. If you love Mpreg, fated mates, family drama, May / December, family friend's son - you're going to get your eyeballs full on top of a lot of passion. This couple was adorable, exacerbating, sweet, angry, and captivating.

An older Omega (35 years old) who had all but given up on dreams of ever attracting a mate or having children. Never would he expect Fate to throw a much younger man into his cogs & sprockets and jam up the works. He loss control of everything. Whenever he tried to wrestle control back he just mucked everything up. But how could he ruin the life of a young man with so much going for him? How could he betray his good friend? How could he give up what he'd always dreamed of?

Age ain't nothing but a number. Yet how could a younger Alpha convince someone older & more experience that he had the wisdom and maturity to make the best choices? That what he was giving up mattered less than what he'd be gaining? That he was Alpha enough to handle an older lover. That no matter what anyone said he'd be making his own decisions.

Feeling both betrayed and supported by your own son, by your crazy but caring brothers, by parents who couldn't wait to spoil a grandchild, by a man you trusted not to rip your own heart out, or by someone sent by Fate to love you unconditionally.

I adored this book and have already downloaded the next two in the trilogy. I recommend it if you love sweet Omegaverse tales, conflicts, and babies.

This ended up being pretty meh.

Everything is pretty shallow, from world building (I don't think it ever mattered that they could turn into wolves?) to the relationship (it's fated, but there's no real development beyond that) to the characters. Declan is hugely insecure, but it's never explained why he's so insecure. Colt is sort of a cardboard white knight savior type.

I was a bit disappointed in how little the heat mattered too - it was barely a footnote, I'd expected it to feature more than it did.

The writing read fairly simple, but tried to be complex at times and it ended up interrupting the story.

Alpha/Omega

This is a very sweet and slightly angst-y story... Unfortunately, I didn't love Declan, tne Omega in this story... Content was easy to fall in love with from the beginning... Ge was young... Yet, confident, reassuring, and mature in his interactions with Declan... But, Declan kept bringing up the same excuse over and over... Honestly, it became repetitive and tiresome... So, for me... I could not find the connection between the two MCs... It was more forced than natural...

It was a bit different. The story was an older (35) omega finding his mate, a much younger alpha. The problems are the age difference and perception that the omega is taking advantage of the alpha. A bit too much of the omega trying to break it off for the good of the alpha for my taste. One very minor quibble, in the beginning I got the impression that the three brothers lived together and were struggling. However, the parents popped up later in the story—and it could have been that I just made assumptions. Overall, I enjoyed the story well enough to want to read the next one.

There’s good bones but…

This is a shifter (barely) romance with mpreg, the first in a series that I assume should be read in order. There were some great bones to this story but it wasn’t enough for me. I was expecting the book to be shifter or pack focused but except to use those words, this might as well be described as an “omegaverse” story. I did like the characters, those were mostly thought out but most of this story is missing world-building and there are details that contradict.

This book doesn't promise much, and it delivers exactly that. Nothing.
It's not bad per say, but it's not good. All of the characters are shallow and we don't really know anything about any of them. Declan constantly whining about how they can't be together for no logical reason got quite annoying.
Frank's abandonment of his only son was so bizarre and out of place.
Will I read the other two? Probably not.

Cute, sweet read

I thought that this was a sweet story, though I was a bit confused as to why Colt and Declan seemed to agree to marking and sealing their mating at least twice before they actually did it. That made me re-read and think that I missed something rather than staying in the flow of the story.

This had lots of potential, I liked the roles reversed with an older omega and young alpha, but I didn't get to invest in the characters due to the amount of angst, petty miscommunication and Declan's mood swings - I had whip-lash and became drama weary. There is little snippets about Declan's two brothers, but not enough I want to read further.

4.7 I really really enjoyed this. I liked especially how the couple connected and how they coped with things and I mean Colton was just a piece of perfection. And I found it funny how protective he got. I loved and adored the ending. The only that slightly bothered me was how often Declan kept pushing Colton away it got repetitive

cute mpreg romance

Age gap mpreg romance. This was a cute romance, very fluffy age gap.
I am not an age gap fan, but I am an Mpreg fan.
I think this was supposed to be a shifter story, but no sign of any shifters just that we were told they were wolf shifters .
Declan and Colt were likable characters.

The book turned out okay.

I gave this book the benefit of the doubt. What I really don't get is why there is no conversation between the main characters. Its all this thinking in the head. Then, there's this appeasing certain readers where you have to have "straight" M/F angst to get them thrilled. I hope, the following books are better.

The storyline is okey, typical alpha omega plot. I like how persistent Celton is when he wants something and the fact that he never give up for their relationship is a huge green flag. I understand Declan’s feeling but i wish the author include more scenes of them having discussions and more details on their relationship. Love the smut but i need more.
