Unit 1

Allen Kent's Unit 1 Series

Rate this book
This book set includes "USA Today" and Amazon bestselling author Allen Kent's five international thrillers that make up the popular Unit 1 Series: "The Shield of Darius," "The Weavers of Meanchey," "The Wager," "The Marburg Mutation," and "Straits of the Between." Follow Kent's covert Unit 1 team as they defuse crises and clean up disasters too hot to handle by America's more visible intelligence community. From the labyrinthine bazaars of Tehran, to the jungle ruins of Cambodia's Angkor Wat, to the monastic palaces of Tibet's Buddhist lamas, the Unit 1 Series takes the reader on a globetrotting, page-turning ride into the darkest corners of the world's most sinister places. A "must read" for thriller enthusiasts.

This bargain collection is priced at what three of the books would cost separately. For a brief summary of each novel, see www.allenkentbooks.com.

These books are intelligent--generously (but not pompously) flavored with information about geography, cultures, social and political issues, technology, and even human nature. I especially enjoyed "traveling" to the locales near and far that Kent has meticulously researched and described.
The stories are ingeniously plotted with intersecting action centering around a small enough cast of characters to keep track of, but large enough to flesh out the subplots. I kind of hope a few of the characters, like Kate & Ben Sager and Andrew (the Rubik's cube kid), might show up again in later books in the series.
The first book (The Shield of Darius) was a bit of a rough start, in that it had me wondering who the heck I was supposed to be rooting for, since the Unit 1 operative obviously was not the good guy, in a series featuring Unit 1. I was glad to see the focus sharpen in the second book (The Weavers of Meanchey). The core cast, and the nature of Unit 1 itself, evolve as the series continues, keeping stories fresh and realistic. Happily, though not all the good guys survive, the outcome of each book's challenge is satisfying.
Character development and relationships aren't at the top of the list of expectations for thriller novels, but Kent pays more than average attention to those aspects of the stories, without dwelling on tiresome introspection or sex scenes.
Speaking of sex scenes, I appreciate that Kent doesn't get carried away with overly lurid sex scenes, guts and gore, or the constant f-bombs that other thriller authors can't seem to write without.
I bought the Kindle edition, so I enjoyed the lion's share of the five books being read to me by Text-to-Speech Dude who lives in my Kindle Fire, while prepping my garden vegetables for the freezer. Very handy.

A group of very interesting books.

The author is very detailed about how he put these stories together. That is both good and bad, sometimes he is repeating the story from a different person’s point of view. He developed all the characters to a fine detail and the stories are all developed just like he walked in the same place as each character. Each book was better than the one before. The growth of each story and each character leaves so many story lines that can be incorporated in the future. Read and enjoy.

Five books in the series. A lot of hours to finish all five. Was it worth it? Oh, yeah it was worth it!

This series of books build upon each other and showcase not only the skills of the members of Unit 1 but also the various surrounding areas they are involved in with the detail that signifies somone's direct experience. And that experience of the various countries and details comes from the author Allen Kent.

I highly recommend this series of books.

Hanging on for fear life

What I call a real cliff hanger. Sometimes I would find myself holding my breath in reading about the mountain escapes. I like it when good overcomes bad. I don't like all the killings tho.

Loved this book by Allen Kent. I've read three of the books in the Unit One series and this one did not disappoint. Of course, this is my favorite genre! The plot is well paced and complex, and the setting is rich with description, culture and history. I particularly enjoyed the cultural backdrop as well as well-developed, true-to-life, believable characters. A highly suspenseful, well-written novel. Recommend this author and this series without reservation. .

A fabulous series.

Very impressed with this Unit 1 series. The way the characters have developed as well as the way New characters are brought in.
The research has been phenomenal and shows throughout. The way we get the backstory to events as they unfold helps us to fully understand the complexity of the plots involved.
I cannot praise Allen Kent enough on what has been a fantastic journey which I hope has not finished. Now into the next in this series and hope more are underway.
