Joan is a lot of things, a pie-maker, a veterinarian’s assistant, and an orphan, but she never expected to find out she was a wizard too.
But when the eccentric headmaster casts a spell to find the mythical dragon tamer, she’ll find herself with an all-expenses-paid scholarship to the worlds greatest magic academy and not only that, she has a white wolf for a familiar.
There’s just one catch. She’s caught the eye of the devilishly handsome and heartlessly cruel headmaster’s son, which, okay, isn’t that bad, assuming, of course, her pies can melt his frozen heart before he throws her to the ogre who lives beneath the school.
Wonder, dragons, fae, fantasy, and romance, these are the things Melody Rose loves to write about. If these are the things you love, please think about following me on Amazon or on Facebook.
So, the premise of this book got me interested. I love heroines that are into baking or animals and this book contained both. I was surprised to see that this book wasn't reviewed well. But, I didn't care and I wanted to give it a chance anyway and to address the other reviews. Some people commented on Theo's character and how Joan's interest in him and his character they didn't like at all. Theo is a controversial character for sure but he's meant to be that way. Obviously he's arrogant, self centered, pompous, and out of line. But he is true to his upbringing, circumstance, previously developed character and I'm sure later on the series we will see growth in him. Now, Joan, I loved her character, she wasn't the usual fantasy heroine or even fantasy academy heroine; she didn't have straight A's, excel at everything, have men flock to her, and be a supernatural creature with some rare supernatural gift. And, I liked it, it was unique and more relatable because she was human with her own passions that will become her strongest gifts. She's more real. I see and like what the author was trying to do here and I will continue the series. In addition, the author did some things very well. The book and characters were very well developed. And, the author included a few little touches that made me really enjoy reading this. Now, in regards to Joan and Theo's relationship, there wasn't much of one. And, yes Theo wasn't my favorite and the author needs him to go through some major character development before or if they ever become a couple. I think it will happen but it's not something to really worry about since they haven't even kissed yet. Overall, I'm rating this book 4 stars I liked and enjoyed it. But, I will disclaim that some of Theo and Joan's interactions borderline bully romance so if you aren't open to that or loath the idea of it don't read this book..
Starts out sumptuous but quickly spoils and sours...much like our hero’s personality
So, unfortunately this book, which I was absolutely prepared to love (being that I thoroughly enjoyed Rose’s other work) fell on a horribly horribly sour note for me. The problem lies entirely with our romantic “lead,” our “hero.” Joan is feisty, fun, sweet generous and truly a great main character. But her counterpart, her romantic interest has no redeemable traits whatsoever, and where his snobbery, and attitude served for some witty banter between the two, early on, the constant barrage of his truly elitist, snobby, classist, high handed, holier than thou, better than you attitude for literally 99.99% of the book becomes so incredibly tedious and “sour tasting,” that you find yourself wishing that he’d be swallowed up by a bogart so that Joan may find herself a man worthy of her gracious and loving heart! The author (despite the use of some of the secondary characters to try and “explain” his attitude and behavior) just falls and misses the mark so completely with Theo. I believe what began as quips, and an attempt at “feisty” banter between two different characters...ends by painting such a disagreeable portrait of our romantic lead that you truly truly thoroughly dislike him to the point of looking between the pages for ANY other possible romantic lead...even one of the trolls!! I’d actually have taken one of the trolls by the end of the book, Theo so utterly repelled me! And then, just when you think it can’t get any worse than reading one more line of his self importance...you’re proven wrong, when the author decides to let go of Joan’s backbone, spine, and feisty nature in deference to placating her obnoxious romantic prospect...and actually trying to convince us (poorly too) that a horrible, cruel, violent act is actually...seductive and a softening of Joan’s heart toward our pompous, pathetic, “hero.” This book had potential...unfortunately a thoroughly, seriously, thoroughly, unlikeable main character, and some 70,000k words of unbelievable snobbery and “putting down,” of the pathetic (because yes, yes, I get it, we humans are disgusting and pathetic) “Lambs Blood” killed this story dead.
I liked the story, and 99% of the characters. However, Theo is just a character that I detest with the fire of a thousand suns, and I hope he has a big fall coming because the guy is pretentious, arrogant, cruel, overbearing and a bullying know-it-all who is so caught up in his family’s stature that I’m surprised he can even talk with that silver ladle shoved down his throat... although he’s so up himself it wouldn’t surprise me if that silver ladle wasn’t shoved somewhere else though.
Joan on the other hand is a real sweetie who tries to see the best in people, but has been through the wringer so has confidence issues. Her attachment to Aurelias was so sweet, and her kind nature has let her befriend quite a few of the castle’s inhabitants. Still wondering where Theo’s dad is in all this because he really should get off his a$$ and deal with the power hungry fruit of his loins.
Enjoyed this, but hating Theo (who doesn’t deserve a redemptive arc) means I’m giving this 3 stars ⭐️
I wanted to like this book because I love the Supernatural Academy genre. It’s interesting enough that I’ll give the next book a try, at the very least. Although, I do hope the next one is edited a bit better. Typos, awkward sentences, and grammar mistakes throughout are distracting.
WARNING****SPOILERS
The female lead’s love interest is the WORST! He’s arrogant, entitled, and has such an awful sense of superiority that he comes off more like a crazy, self-obsessed reality star. I feel like maybe the author was *trying* to portray him more as a person with a rigidity to him, almost like someone obsessed with the idea of perfection. In his mind that would’ve meant following societal rules (proper speech, etiquette, dress, etc.), rules of the academy, and keeping school focused solely on studies. Unfortunately, she missed the mark there with the male lead and he becomes so un-likable in a very extreme way. It’s not just about rules for him or some sense of chasing his version of perfection, it’s about his breeding, his superiority, his ability to dictate the lives of students and assert his power over everyone at the academy. I mean, the guy feels so sure of his status he can barely stand to wear designer jeans when visiting the human realm and complains about the lack of refinery, (or lack of anything he deems essential) during just about all the internal monologuing he has in the book. If the female lead and male lead had a feud because of a legitimate reason it would make more sense, but he’s simply a pompous butthead from the very beginning. I get that he had some issues following the death of his mother, but he’s so stuffed with superiority and the need to put down everyone around him that it sort of diminishes the validity of his grief as the reason he finds it so difficult to be nice to anyone. The father is portrayed as this down to earth, inclusive sort of man who feels everyone deserves an education and opportunities. Somehow his kid ended up acting like a selfish little boy with a proverbial stick up his bum. He’s also overly formal so his internal monologues and every bit of dialogue he has with other characters is uncomfortably stiff and medieval sounding. The other issue I had was with how the female lead, Joan, comes to realize she might have feelings for Theo, (aka uptight guy). At that point in the book she’d been doing really well in her first classes, feeling confident in the magical abilities she’d been able to perform, and then she got in trouble with the guy for breaking a rule. So they go through this whole thing where she gets in yet another screaming match with him and have a huge fight where he threatens her. After the fact, she goes to class and finds she can’t perform the task asked of her. It’s ONE class on her FIRST day. She’s been at the school for maybe 2 days, is in her first day, it’s the first time she’s even attempted working that type of magic, and that’s all it takes for her to crumble completely. She looses faith in herself in the span of a single class and then suddenly she’s ready to be friends and romantically involved with the lead guy. Like, what?! How the heck did she lose confidence in EVERYTHING in one class? Why isn’t she even thinking about asking for help from her friend or from any of the other creatures that seem so endeared to her? But most importantly, why on earth did she expect to do everything on the first try her first day of class? Especially after watching freaking everyone in her earlier class fail an entire project? After portraying her a certain way, this seemed out of character for her. Then when she catches Theo entertaining another girl she acts all betrayed when she’d given no actual indication she wanted anything to do with him. Her dramatics over the entire situation seemed over the top. She didn’t even freak out that much when she left home through a portal!
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
------------
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: No -- I really wanted to like this book. I went in only reading the premise, but its a 'do not continue.' --
---- Pros: I thought the premise was really interesting.
The world building was good.
For the most part, the MC, Joan was a good character.
I liked most of the other characters except huge ecxeption being the 'love interest' Theo (see below). - Personal likes: White wolf for a familiar.
-- Cons: I managed to force myself to read the first few chapters, then skip read to the end due to the 'love interest' Theo. -- This male is a pretentious priss of a dandy. A fop who from start to finish had me hoping for his painful death.
Actually his father is also not that great, since he allows his brat of a son to run the school. Not only does Theo get away with bullying behaviour towards other students, but also towards the staff.
As someone who often 'likes' the bad guy in films and shows more than the 'good guy,' this male just had me wanting Joan to turn him into a peice of lint. Being a toad would be too good for him.
Joan lost 'good character' points by being attracted to him. She needs to spend some of her enrolment allowance on good therapy.
If I read that book 2 started with Theo's death (can be in his sleep even), I'd then pick up the series again.
Oii 🤦🏽♀️ Lord save me, I beg you! I’m honestly over stories like this one. The ones that have so much potential but go no where. The ones with a great female and even male lead but who don’t have enough character development. This book remained the same from start to finish; with our female lead being pissed off at our ill mannered wanna be cultured male lead. There was no was excitement, nothing to garner any anticipation, no freaking climax! It was all __________ the whole time! I meant flat btw. I just can’t. I’m really not picky with stories but based on the past couple reviews I’ve written, you’d think I was! If a book has a good plot and okay characters, I can and most likely will work around grammatical errors and other minor issues there may be but I really bloody hate when a story has the potential to exceed our expectations but simply doesn’t because the author lacks imagination. I mean come tf on!
please someone tell me that Joan will bring that asshole a peg or two down. i want him down on his knees beggin for forgiveness. i wanna punched him in the dick so hard just to stop him from speaking. and what can we say about Joan? how many times does she need to get kicked by that pompous bastard to stop giving him power? is she a masochist or something? and seriously...the little boy pulled her "pigtails" so he must like her. soooo outdated consept. if i ever have boys he will be taught not to "pull girls' pigtails" or else i'm chopping off a hand. i hope that in the next book Mr. Blond gets an attitude adjustment , recosiders his point of view, learns that he isn't the most important thing in the world. And dear god let her at least play hard to get. returning to his room after she caught him with Lydia?could she look any more desperate?

I love it when I find a new author that produces well written and fun books. I got tipped to try out Melody Rose’s books by someone I trust. I’m glad I did as the first one I tried, Her White Wolf (The Academy of Amazing Beasts, Book 1), was simply superb. I loved Joan, the heroine here. Pie-maker, veterinarian’s assistant and, well, surprise(!), wizard too. Add in a plot with action, excitement, imaginative twists and turns and, yes, a bit of romance, and the result is a truly fun reading time indeed. You can’t go wrong with that. Frankly, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed, I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more by this author.
I honestly thought this would be different. This took a while to read because it was so dry. The story moved at a slow pace and I'm not sure what exactly the title refers to. Joan seemed like such a strong character but the more I read, the more I felt dismayed. Theo was intolerable from the very beginning. What kind of school is run without the presence of the headmaster? So many things wrong with this but I read til the end in hopes it would get better. There was no overall story that I could see so I'm just disappointed.
What a great start to this series! A well written, entertaining, fast paced and action packed academy story that once started you will not want it to end! I loved the female mc who thought she was normal and in fact was not and she has great chemistry and interactions with the other characters. I for one cannot wait to see where this series leads!
My rating’s harsh because there were a few pages I enjoyed reading but I am in awe that I actually finished this book!
Melody Rose can write. No doubt.
But for the life of me I could not find nor see the point of this entire book. The whole premise of the book seemed promising but the pages...the pages kept going and they kept going places I never want to go to nor spend time exploring.
Joan is a human with an extraordinary ability. I enjoyed how realistic her situation was written. A new student of unusual yet ordinary background trying to fit in an environment filled with rules and history where power and prestige rule supreme. Let’s be real, on screen she would’ve been the belle of the ball, the new special, the mystery girl. In real life though 🤷♀️ it would’ve been hard. Like this book!
Theo is everything Joan would’ve wanted to be. He had the prestige, family, and power to reign supreme. And the man did. He was born for the top of the hierarchy. I suspect his middle name is ‘Rules’.
He was an asshole for his rules and she was an idiot. They got on my nerves. Some chapters Theo took to being an asshole like it was a race for gold🥇. And in others Joan was like a rebellious tween. Absolutely ridiculous.
I might come back and change my rating to two ⭐️ ⭐️ because Melody Rose really can write. It’s just..this book. This book is NOT it.
I recommend this to you dear reader who enjoys tween attitudes and everything I mentioned up there. You should definitely pick this up if this is your cuppa. This isn’t mine so I’m not picking this up again and I definitely won’t be picking up the next one. I’m still recovering from the single tone of this one.
Maybe I’ll just pick up another Melody Rose book 🤷♀️ who knows? But this one really got me having trust issues.
Adios & Happy Reading, folks ! I’m off to the next one on my TBR pile. Stay safe & sanitise 🙂
Okay, the cover is what caught my eye (as I do judge a book by its cover initially, sorry not sorry). I read the blurb for this and was super intrigued so was excited to get it started. It started off and immidiately I was like oh this is like a cinderalla reference, daughter with a stepmother/2 step sisters and she treats here crappy & stole all her inheritence okay...I'll keep going. Next the MMC enters the picture with no real explanation and then all of a sudden he whisks her off to the academy, drops her off and tells her to fend for herself...um okay. Bit more of the story goes by not to badly written, enough charcters and build of the world. The next thing I realize is the book starts to be taken over by "cooking/food" I get that the MFC loves to bake but the further I kept reading the more it focused around food & there was no real sotry line build. The blurb that caught me to download this book was no were near any of what was held in the actual book. Was not for me. It was a quick read so that is why I kept going to finish it out and see if it got better and we started to get closer to the book blurb but nope and then it just ends weirdly. Nothing hooked me or wanted me to download book two or ever pick up this series again unfortunately.
I really disliked the characters from the beginning, so didn't get very far.
It starts with a pompous, self-important, pretentious jackass - sorry, I mean a mage - going in search of a magical "champion" among lowly humans on his father's orders, in order to regain his family school's prestige. He finds her in a modern cinderella-type situation working in both a bakery and as a vet assistant and, despite being entirely obnoxious and weird in both behaviour and speech, persuades her that an out of the blue offer of an all expenses paid education in animal care (and cookery classes) at his academy is somehow legit. She then follows him across town and through a magic portal without further question. Yup.
After about the first 5 chapters I really wanted the h to punch him. But sadly she greatly disappointed.
Given all the high ratings I'm really hoping that the book does improve, but I won't be reading further at this time.
Quite an enjoyable story! Very different from any of the books that I have read! Truly a wonderful experience and I look forward to the rest of the story to unfold!
I could not decide whether I liked this book or not. The story itself is not that bad but some of the characters were just a no-no for me. Theo was the worst of them all. He was too much. He was too arrogant, too self-centered, and too self-serving. His 'intentions' might have been for the right reasons -- in his opinion -- but it was just all too much. He did not possess the balance he needed to fit the story. Although it is obvious that he will end up as the love interest, I just don't feel it. I was not moved towards him in any way. I have read plenty of bully romances where the bully gets the girl, but Theo and Joan just don't click! I cannot, for the life of me, picture the two together. Towards the end I could picture, maybe, a decent friendship but nothing more than that. Nathan's appearance was very brief, but he showed more signs as the main love interest than Theo did.
And then the Joan situation... The way Theo has treated her the whole time will not get any girl to quickly and swiftly start falling for him and/or wanting his approval. She genuinely seeks his approval even though he had yet to show any sort of empathy and compassion. I mean this chick starts feeling this way before he even utters an 'I'm sorry'. That to me was simply a big fat no.
Honestly, I don't like leaving reviews with less than 4 stars but I just don't think I can give this more than 3.5 stars. I am not even sure if this is a series I will continue reading.

I really wanted to enjoy this book as much as I hoped I would've. It was really promising from the synopsis. I did love the world building and the plot. I thought it was wonderfully done. It had a hint of Harry Potter, beauty and the beast and reminded me a little of a manga/anime called blue exorcist.
What disappointed me was Theo as the love interest. He's a spoiled brat and an even bigger bully. He definitely reminded me of draco malfoy and deserves none of the love/interest of the main character Joan.
At first (in some instances) I thought it was humorous that he thought he was doing her good and tries to help her in his own twisted way. Then I realised that he's very unlikeable because of that. I had hoped for more character development from him somewhere mid story but was very disappointed it was at the end.
It left me not wanting to read the second book and left a bad taste of how I view Theo. If there had been some type of character development earlier on and i learned to sympathize or be emotionally attached to him someway, it would've had left me wanting for more.
I literally had to push past of how big of an elitist and narcissist he truly was. The only saving grace was that I loved the world and joan.
Her White Wolf Melody Rose Liked Joan, up to a point. Did NOT like Theo AT ALL. Wish HE would drop off a cliff onto his head. Liked all the supporting characters.

ONE INTERESTING ADVENTURE!!! Dazzling delight! Melody stirs one eclectic mix that's as thrilling as it riveting with this exciting storyline and engaging plot that bursts this baby wide open. A swirling eddy of startling mishaps and electrifying events propel all of your emotions blazing to life front and center. One totally engaging, mesmerizing, enthralling wonder that captures your attention from start to finish. Twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few bumps here and there make for one remarkable experience. Throw in all the drama, intrigue and suspense and you have one page turning bombshell that kicks up the heat and lands you on the edge of your seat. The characters are authentic, relatable and realistic with depth and on point personalities that blend and flow fluidly. The scenes are so graphically detailed it really seals this little treasure together beautifully. The scenes are so graphically descriptive you have no trouble picturing each scenario as it plays out perfectly. Fantastic job Melody, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

This was a great little gem of a novel. Great world building and wonderful characters that have been created. Fabulous plot and story line that kept me engaged throughout. Love the characters and can't wait to see where the author takes us with them next. The Garden is spectacular and so vivid. I can't wait to read the next one! Recommend reading.

Joan MacKenna knew she was clumsy. Theo is an entitled mage. He comes into the family bakery and Joan meets him in the worst possible; spilling several pies on him when she brings them to the front of her family bakery. They have sparks, just not romantically.. more like oil and water. Some things go from bad to worse; some get better. The fun is in the journey there. Looking for the next book as soon as it comes out.
The book did have decent world development but the characters could have been developed better. Theo comes of as a self-important bully. Joan apparently has the backbone to stand up to Theo then suddenly changes her mind like she has put on rose-colored glasses and gets mushy again.
Hopefully, this will be addressed in the next book.

Joan hates working for her step mother and step sisters - and also has to pay rent to live in the home per parents left when they passed away. She also works as a vet's assistant, and loves helping the animals. When a handsome man abuses her for spilling pies over him - and then shows up at the vet while she is working there, she has no idea of how Theo is going to change her life. She has no idea that she is a itch - and that his puppy is hr familiar. He is the headmasters' son at Bouclier - the world's greatest magic academy. But why is he making it so hard for her? I cant wait to read more of Joan's adventures - and to find out whether she can changes Theo's apparent dislike of her!

“Her White Wolf” was an amazingly good tale, although I don’t get the title, the book was so entertaining and funny that I stayed in that happy place all the way through to the end. The interaction between Joan and Theo was funny, hot and maddening. The felt like a comedy act at times bouncing insults off each other. Joan growing magic is so sweet to behold that I felt her pride each time something good happened. There were so many scenes with such original twists that I felt like I didn’t know anything about magical academies. This is definitely a good read and well worth the time.
