Kings of the Castle by Naleighna Kai is a multicultural literary feast. This is book one of a nine book series. Books two through nine are standalones with no cliffhangers and can be read in any order.
Naleighna Kai, S.L. Jennings, Martha Kennerson, J.L. Campbell, Lisa Watson, Karen D. Bradley, Janice M. Allen, London St. Charles and MarZe Scott have created a new world. There are nine stories and nine bestselling, award-winning authors. Enter the world of The Castle and it’s Kings.
Khalil Germaine, a teacher of philosophy and science, founded both the Macro International Magnet School and The Castle. Both were humanitarian endeavors. The school was a way to positively influence the development of young men. The Castle was founded to provide assistance to worthy humanitarian programs and to create them where there was a need not being met. Khalil focuses extra attention on his son and eight other young men he felt had the potential to become leaders.
Vikkas Germaine, Jaidev “Jai” Maharaj, Daron Kincaid, Victor Alejandro “Dro” Reyes, Shastra “Shaz” Bostwick, Grant Khambrel, Mariano “Reno” DeLuca, Kaleb Valentine and Dwayne Harper proved Khalil Germaine correct. They all became successful. When Khalil is shot, he calls these young men to his ICU bedside to pass the torch.
It’s now up to Khalil’s protégés to bring The Castle back to it’s humanitarian roots. They decide for themselves that they will seek revenge on those who attacked their mentor. The new Kings vow to root out and eliminate the evil that has infiltrated The Castle and protect it and each other from future attacks.
Naleighna Kai is the primary author of book one and has done an admirable job of introducing all the characters and the premise of the series. I’m sure this was somewhat a team effort but there is no obvious difference in writing style. Chicago is a complex city and it has been utilized within these pages in it’s full multi-faceted nature. There are a lot of characters in this novel, but I didn’t feel shortchanged on any of them. The primary characters all have complete backstories and there was enough detail of secondary characters to prevent them from being flat. There are so many character details that it seems almost impossible that even a team of writers was able to create such rich characters. The plot kept me enraptured from start to finish and the ending is a perfect lead-in to any of the other books in the series.
Kings of the Castle is a more than suitable beginning for a series that promises to be a standout. I am compelled to rate it an easy 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to anyone who enjoys multicultural romantic suspense, or anyone who enjoys good fiction. There is some sexual content that may be offensive to some readers.
My thanks to INscribe Digital and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
What an interesting introduction to this series. Being honest, the book starts off a little slow, but it picks up after a few chapters. As more characters are introduced, it becomes easier to read and things start to come together well. My favorite thing about this book, has to be the diversity of the characters❤❤Another thing I enjoyed about this story, is the mystery of what's come. I couldn't really guess what's going to happen, which sparked more of my interest. There's so many pieces to this puzzle, so you have a pay close attention or else you'll miss something important. It's a promising series and I'm looking forward to reading more.
This was a book i found for free on Apple Books a long time ago,and never got round to reading. While a little confusing to start,it became clear pretty soon how these men were all connected. And what was set in motion because of that connection…. While the various sorts of attacks have seemed random at first,it became clear why each man was targeted. And it all had to do with the man that became their mentor and saviour all those years ago. The same man that was shot, and rushed to hospital. This is the intriguing start of a series of 9 books in total, each story dealing with one of these men,and their better halves. Dealing with the threats to The Castle and it’s integrity.
As starter, this set the stage pretty well,i have to say. Giving every man equal attention,it makes you curious about what makes them tick. And what the women who capture their hearts are made of….
I have a problem with this review and I don't know what to write about this book. This book has seven authors that will be giving each MC their own story, and I will grab the next one's for sure as this one had intrigued me of the purpose of the Kings of the Castle. This book can seem hectic till about 50% but after that, some puzzle pieces are put into their places and some thongs start to make sense. I hope that the next individual stories Will be even better, as this book was good, yet a little hectic with information put here and there.
This book had me ready to read all the other books in one night!! This foundation was laid so well that I read it in one day and I will read it again before the next book comes out. These guys have all kinds of things going on in their personal life but still find time to help others and fall in love! This is definitely a must read!
Loved this book, and yes I preordered the other books so I can have everyone’s story. Can’t wait to see it all come together. I highly recommend the entire series, but you have to read this one first so you can follow the others
This is a book that really holds your attention from the very beginning until the end. I loved how well the characters were developed and you learn what brings them all together in this storyline. The man Khalil Germaine who has been a mentor to each of the 9 men since they were young men. So much has happened since the young men went their separate ways to start an entrepreneurship of their own. Now that an attempt has been made on Khalil’s life, he wants his son Vikkas Germaine the King Of Wilmette to contact the others to join together and help run The King Of Castle compound. As the story unfolds you learn about the backstory of each of the men and what is going on in their business and personal life. This prepares you for the continuation of their storylines in books 2-9. There are a lot of plot twist and turns as you read about each King’s life, love, families and enemies.. I commend all of the authors who have collaborated on The Kings of the Castle, the storyline flows together and you don’t even realize there is more than author writing this storylines. I highly recommend this book to read first and then read books 2-9 that are standalone and can be read in any order. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC of this book and my review is of my own and honest opinion.
Khalil Germaine mentored nine young men each of those men has gone out into the world and started his own businesses and all are succesful in their own way When there is an assassination attempt on the life of Khalil then Grant, Alejandro, Shaz, Mariano, Vikkas, Jai, Daron, Kaleb, and Dwayne will return to work with their mentor to protect The Castle and all it stands for With big business and crime syndicates all having their fingers in the pie then the streets will get bloody as they try to return the castle back to it's true aim and its humanitarian principles. Get ready for a roller coaster ride there are a lot of characters to keep sorted but the ride is well worth it
This is a powerhouse introduction to introduce us to the Kings. There are many characters and the plot moves between them quickly. Even though each of the Kings has their own story, Ms. Kai manages to weave them all together seamlessly, so the ending makes perfect sense. I was intrigued by the racial and cultural diversity of the Kings, as well as their love interests. I was pleased by the strength and intelligence of the female characters, they all were different but interesting. It’s hard to fully develop this many plots but everything was done with nothing out of order. I can’t wait to finish the series.
These boys have one major thing in common and that's their love of food, “gentlemen, would you care to join us for dinner?” Val said, causing Dwayne to nearly choke. Kaleb was out of his blazer in a jiffy. Shaz, Grant, and Reno all followed suit. Vikkas slid his tie over his shoulder and said, “Thought you’d never ask.” This was a good book, it was a nice introduction for what's to cimw in the series.
I like the originality of this book. Each King 👑 in this book has their own back story before they “Step into royalty”. I love how each King has his own style and I can’t wait to read about them in the upcoming books!
If you have the mental capacity to keep up with 9+ story lines and at least a dozen names, you may enjoy this. Way too many names to keep up with for me and each name has a whole story line attached to it. I just could not keep up. Lots of character introductions and setting the stage for the rest of the series, which I probably will not be continuing.
Fate made them brothers. Protecting the Castle, each other, and the women they love will make them Kings.

REVIEW: KINGS OF THE CASTLE is the first instalment in the multi-authored / multi-cultural KINGS OF THE CASTLE romantic suspense series focusing on nine ‘brothers’ (Vikkas, Reno, Shaz, Jai, Daron, Kaleb, Grant, Dro and Dwayne) mentored and taught by the mysterious Khalil Germaine at the exclusive Macro International Magnet School in Chicago.
Told from several third person perspectives KINGS OF THE CASTLE follows in the aftermath of an attempted assassination of Khalil Germaine, founder of The Castle, a restrictive and exclusionary institution, an institution currently on a downward spiral of crime, immoral and unethical practices in the absence of its leader and owner. The attempt on his father’s life finds Vikkas Germaine contacting his father’s former students as he and his father endeavor to persuade the nine to take over, and remake The Castle into what is was always meant to be…but each new member of The Castle is facing an uphill battle in both their personal and professional lives, a battle that began on the cusp of their mentor’s assassination.
KINGS OF THE CASTLE introduces the players and Kings of the Castle, once boys, plucked from the streets of Chicago who have developed into strong and learned young men: Head master and mentor Khalil Germaine: Reno (King of Chatham) is responsible for rescuing the trafficking victims filtered through The Castle: Grant (King of Lincoln Park) is responsible for untangling The Castle’s properties from illegal deals; Jai (King of Devon) is responsible for the health and well being of The Castle and its Kings: Daron (King of Morgan Park) responsible for vetting members, contractors and the security of The Castle; Dro (King of Hyde Park) responsible for special assignments; Shaz (King of Evanston) responsible for all legal documents and systems for The Castle;Vikkas (King of Wilmette) responsible for the international holding of The Castle;Kaleb (King of South Shore) responsible for development projects in the underprivileged neighborhoods in Chicago; Dwayne (King of Lawndale) whose purpose has yet to be determined. Each member of the nine has a story to tell; a woman to love; and the responsibility to remain strong in the face of threats by a number of The Castle members who struggle with the emergence of a new family of leaders. The premise is complex with a large amount of exposition and information that reveals just enough clues to keep the reader in suspense; the characters are numerous, energetic, strong and capable.
You know how some series you get them but you aren't 100% sure what they are about but once you start reading them you find yourself enjoying them and wanting more, that is how I felt after reading the first two books in the Kings of the Castle series. In King of Chatham by London St. Charles, we read the story of Reno and it had a taste of what was happening with their mentor and how they had all been called back to The Castle. Book #1 Kings of the Castle is mainly Vikkas - Khali's son story and more in-depth about the shooting and how the Brotherhood which would become the new Kings of the Castle was first created and how they all stepped up to the plate when their mentor and surrogate father Khali needed their help. Most of the boys haven't seen each other since they left school, but have always kept in contact with Khali. Khali created an organization called The Castle and now the organization has been used for illegal activities and Khali needs the help of the brotherhood to turn it around. Will the boys step up when needed despite the dangers ahead they face and take their rightful places as Kings of the suburbs they represent and put their jobs and skills into cleaning up the city? Find out in Book #1 which sets the premise not only for the series but also Book #2 which is King of Chatham which features Reno and Zuri. Before I finish the review, one of my favorite parts in this book was the divorce conversation between Khali and his wife, I had to read it twice as it made me chuckle.
The Kings, Nine young boys, now men that were at one point in their life mentored by Khalil Germaine. Now that Khalil needs them, each one is requested to come back and bring the Castle back to where it was originally set to be and protect it and the women they love at all cost. The story seems to be a little busy at the start, but that's more than likely because this book introduces each of the men that will be in future stories. One good thing about this book is although it was written by multiple authors, I had a hard time distinguishing which author wrote which part except one, and I'm thinking it's because I read the book that the characters came from (it was good to hear from them by the way and I can't wait to see what else happens with them. Also no, it's not mandatory to read that book before reading this one.) I loved the interaction between the characters, especially with Vikkas and what he had to deal with his mother. I can't wait to read the other books in the series.
This is a hard review for me to write because I struggled to keep up with the story but also was intrigued as to where it was going. This is likely because it told the many different stories at once ad I was struggling to make sense of it. at about 50% of the way I finally was able to see where this was going.
This book is just an introduction about how the characters all became part of The Castle. In future books, these individual characters will get their own story that ties them together with what this book was setting up. Once I realized that I liked the concept more. The stories will be written by many different authors.
However, that still didn't stop me from struggling with this story. I worry that other readers might have the same problem which would be a shame because I can REALLy see the potential here. I will definitely look for more of this in the future. There were definitely some characters that piqued my interest more than others.
Writing a fair and informed review is always my aim, but I spent much time contemplating the right words to describe my impression of Kings of the Castle. I suppose I should start by acknowledging the intense, dark and gritty side to the world that has been created, however from there I must admit that the plot was confusing and overwhelming with its many different facets and the directions that each character will take.
So, while I realise that the author is setting a foundation for each individual character and the explanations to come on the life and struggles, which ultimately find them as affiliates of The Castle, there is just so much going on. There is a lot of potential here, and many of the character portrayals make the reader long to know more, but I really had to push through the first half or so of the book. I’m undecided if I’ll continue on to the individuals character stories; only time will tell.
Excellent introduction to the kings and the women in their lives
I enjoyed reading about the characters that will be in the series. These men were brought together by tragedy to their mentor, Khalil Germaine who was the father that each one of these men needed as impressionable boys who attended a specialized magnet school that their mentor/father established. He trusted them to take care of the Castle and return it back to the establishment it was meant to be. Each king has his own specialized talent that takes care of a specific area of the Castle.
But all of these men harbor secrets and all of them have been attacked by the old guard Castle members as well as those who seek to control it. It will be interesting to see what is going to be in store in future books. So far, I am very intrigued by Vikkas and Milan
I loved the Storyline of 9 Men getting together after there mentor had an attempted assassination. The Story told brief summaries of what each men were dealing with in there lives after There Mentor helped them in there Teenage Years. I Love how all the Men & Love Interest show diversity. All the Men are Sucessful Business Owners from Real Estate, Tech Companies , Lawyers , Teachers , Health Professionals etc. All Tranied in some type of weapons training, martial arts and much more. Even though this is only the First Book. It makes you wanna Read about the other 9 Men and there Storylines. The Stories in themselves is intriguing like Human Trafficking, Illegal, Adoptions , Dirty Politicians, Gang Bangers running Drugs through the neighbors, Women Shelter for endangered women. The List Goes on. And Guess What the backdrop is in the Chicago and Surrounding Area.
So this book is a real page turner. I really didn't want to put it down, but I had to take a break because my heart could not take some of the this going on. If you looking for a read that is trying to uplift, be positive and about something this is it. These kings are trying to build a life and make lives better for everyone. I laughed, blushed, and cried with the characters. These men are very real and you feel their joy and pain. Ladies you did your thing.
I'm spell bound when it comes to these characters. This masterpiece flows so well you will not believe several talented Authors put it together. I'm can't wait for each book to be available so I can get my fix so these powerful Kings. Hey your fix of these hunks you won't be disappointed..
Loved book 1 the introduction to the Kings Of The Castle. All these guys Vikkas, Reno, Shaz, Jai, Daron, Kaleb, Grant, Dro and Dewayne are unique in their own way and bring something to the table to get to the bottom of who is behind the shooting of Kahlil Germanie and who is behind the problems facing the Castle.
Now reading book 2 Kings of the Castle of Chatman Reno's book.
After reading this book I couldn’t figure out whose story I wanted to read next. This introduction leaves you wanting to know more about the castle and the Kings. The way the brothers come together to do the right things is amazing. I love this authors work and this one did not disappoint
I really enjoyed this book. After reading the 2nd book in the series, King of Chatham, I decided I needed to go back and read the first one to get a better understanding of the series. I do have a few more questions but I am hoping to get the answers as the series goes forward.
This book is a strong display of positive brotherhood. Even though the other books are stand alones you need to read this one for the foundation. Very interesting! I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
I started reading it, but there was just too much being introduced that I was overwhelmed. I put it down. I'm just going to read the rest of the series without finishing this one.
