Dark Empire #1

Colosseum of Lust

Rate this book
Self-reverence, self-knowledge, self-control; these three alone lead life to sovereign power. ~Alfred Lord Tennyson

A sinister dark web niche for bored rich people with a depraved need to watch sexual decadences have put their money into a project to give them just that. High-end entertainment with lots of violence and lots of sex.
The gladiators have three things in common: They’ve been kidnapped, pumped full of drugs to enhance their strength and stamina, and nobody would ever miss them. Except Duncan who ended up strapped to a lab table as a result of mixed identities.

Since childhood, three personality traits had been attributed to Duncan: Intelligent, determined, and brave. And soon, he’ll marry his geeky fiancé while his best friend and colleague stands next to them. All that come in handy when he wakes up in a nightmare beyond anything that he could have ever dreamt up himself.

He’s going to need that intelligence and courage to get through this. He’s going to need that dedication and love from his fiancé and best friend. And the determination to turn that hell on the ones who put him there.

Meraki P. Dark

Meraki P. Dark is, as the last name suggests, the dark side of Meraki P. Lyhne.

Where Meraki P. Lyhne will play with anything from fluffy slow-burns with HEA and go to the border of dub-con, letting his characters deliver a striped ass, Meraki P. Dark will explore the depraved minds during non-con, and he’ll play with whatever fetish catches his attention.

It is the human psyche and its abilities to stretch or break that will be explored to its fullest. There will always be a plot—no one is tortured unless the character finds a good reason for it within the plot. There is room for love and tender moments, too, but they have to work hard for it!

ALL THE TRIGGERS!
Anything you can think of, it’s in here.
It’s raw and depraved.
I was in the mood for it.
But the writing.
Fuck, the writing killed me.
And not in the good way.
I stopped caring about the story because of the fucking writing.
It made my nasty scenes difficult to understand.
That made me pissy.
That made me take off stars.

But…if you want a dirty, twisted as fuck read and have zero triggers, go for it.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Based on the blurb, I expected a lot of sex and a lot of attention to the dynamic between Duncan and Axel. Colosseum of Lust has the former in spades, but it is laced with so many conventionally taboo elements. First, to be clear, this is absolutely a story about a character who is forced to have a lot of sex against his will. Specifically, he is drugged with a special serum that turns him into a temporarily lust-driven caricature of a man who will stop at nothing to get the kind of sex he wants. Tim, the so-called fuck toy the traffickers fashion for Duncan, is equally prepped to be a slave to submissive desires for pain and humiliation. Next, fulfilling these needs goes far beyond vanilla sex. Violence aside, there is also a lot of on-page urine play, spanking with hands and other accoutrements, and fisting. That is to say, this is not a book for the squeamish. One thing I appreciated is how steadfast Duncan tries to hang onto his humanity, even as he is forced to want these extreme sexual fantasies fulfilled. He runs the gamut from dread at the knowledge a wave of chemically induced lust is coming, to shamelessly acting on that lust, to regret and anger at being so manipulated.

I didn’t really like this book. I’m ok with the sex, but it was just so repetitive. I found myself bored and skimming. I didn’t like the ending either. I wanted to be there when Duncan finally had Dr. Malcom.

The author has pulled out all the tricks to bring us a sadistically deep disturbing, hopeful story.
Now if you have read any of Meraki P. Darks novels, you will know they are not just taboo, but dark, very dark, and sinister, and heavy on depraved sex scenes.
But I found with this one, it was all of that, but the story was so much deeper, and I really connected with both Duncan and Alex.
Duncan has been kidnapped by a dark web depraved sex organisation. He is drugged with a incubus serum that turns him into a depraved rapist. But when the drug wears off, he must face and battle with the guilt of his actions. The author has done a fantastic job of showing his turmoil.
Duncan strikes up a friendship with Tim (Fuck Toy), who is also a captive but is drugged with a serum that makes him need to be raped, hurt, and humiliated to stop an internal pain.
The Evil Dr has created the perfect combination for depraved sexual shows for the filthy rich.
There are two things that keep Duncan in reality, the first is he knows his partner Alex will be looking for him. And after befriending young Tim, he makes it his mission to protect the young mas as much as he can, and vows to save him from these depraved monsters.
Whilst Duncan is continuously on a cycle of being drugged and having increasingly depraved sex. Alex and their friend Tiny start a search for Duncan. Alex is a white Hacker, one that finds security flaws for businesses etc. But as they put the pieces together and follow the trail to find Duncan his morals are becoming weaker. With the help of Tiny’s military buddies, a local ex police officer and Alex’s Dark web buddy they find a sex site on the dark web, and when Alex sees Duncan doing monstrous things, he has to decide if he can deal with what has happened.
Once he gets his head round what he has seen, he knows if he is ever going to bring back Duncan from the darkness he has suffered, he himself must toughen up. Whilst Tiny’s team plan a rescue mission, Zero and Alex dismantle the cartel financially.
It is a dark sinister Horror / Thriller. That has you on the edge of your seat as the story unfolds and once the search for Duncan begins. Can they rescue Duncan and will it be too late to save him mentally?
The story reminds me of the Hostel Movies in that the filthy rich pay insane amounts of money to watch depraved sex scenes, and to bid on what happens to the captives.

OMG!!!! The best book I've read so far this year! It's taken me awhile to write this review because there's so much to say yet I can't lol.
This story is definitely not for the fainthearted, if you have issues with non-con then don't read it!
Duncan gets taken in a case of mixed identity, the people who took him thinks he's a worthless pimp and no one is looking for him. But actually Duncan has a wonderful fiance Alex whose a great hacker but is very timid.
Duncan is taken to be a sex slave and eventually more...for viewers on the dark web.
The author wrote something at the ending of his book about why he writes books like these. It's to hopefully open our eyes to the world of sex trafficking. This book is a bit more sci-fi/fantasy with the drugs and other things going on.
This book is a must read for sure! It definitely had me wondering what was going to happen and then the ending...Gaahhh! I want more!
I received this book to review for my honest opinion!

So most dark reads are just sex and sex and sex with not a lot of back end. I have to say there was a lot sex, but an intriguing story as well that you appreciated.

Just as always this author just amazes me!!! The book is great!

It is the first book of a series and it can’t be read as a stand alone (but if you are into this kind of books you will not want to stop in book one, so no problem there...). The plot is very dark. If you are already familiar with Meraki P. Dark’s books you know they are dark, but this one is darker... like dark, hard, rough... just really, really mind the warnings! But if you are into this, you will not be able to stop!

The characters are deep and gray , you get evil with a brain here, and that’s the sign of great character development! The world building is amazing and thanks to the different P.O.V’s the reader can get a rounded idea of what’s happening everywhere in the story.

I hated the kidnapping! Poor Duncan, but the author had a story to be told and I’m hooked... next one, please (pretty, pretty please!).

This book is a good start for a new series and after that cliffhanger... count me in for the other books too!

The story was interesting, the scenes dark enough, but I had some probleme with the characters. Duncan was a mistery to me, I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that why he stayed?! I got his strength and will to live and to escape, but he wasn't the person who those men wanted, so why stay silent about it?!

The lighter scenes after the darker ones was good too, I loved to watch Duncan caring for his "new friend". They were good together.

The doctor was a good one too! I love this kind of characters - bad but has brain and not just the bad in the background. I loved how Duncan interacted with him, it was good and I laughed when the doc outsmarted Duncan. Poor Duncan...but I laughed.

The ending was in a hurry, and I didn't liked those few chapter in Alex's POV - I know that it was important to see what's happening in the real world and how and when will Duncan escape, but it was boring.

And that cliffhanger! God, give me the next NOW!

This book was given to me as an ARC, all opinions are my own.

After having read the Lil Harvest series, I knew dark means Dark, but it was still difficult to stomach because the theme is different. It is non-con and dub-con, and it's not about an Incubus punishing someone, it's more human related.

Duncan was complex character in a way, fighting with himself and choosing what path to follow in order to keep himself safe. But safe is relative in a place like the Colosseum and with everything going on there I was relived to read about Axel as well.
It drew me in further, and kept me on the edge of my seat, seeing what happened on the outside.

It didn't reach up top for me because I missed seeing more of what went on there, the facility and the inhabitants, the overall hierarchy. Things that most likely will appear in the other books but I still felt were needed in this one.

I wish the end had been different, yes cliffhanger, but it felt like it cut off mid sentence. And after the intensity I needed just a bit more to feel sated.

First off let me just say whoa! I literally did not move from the first word to the last word while reading this one. This book was absolutely riveting. As usual, Meraki Dark built such compelling characters and demonstrated a masterful sense of world-building. Duncan and Axel are stunning in their complexity and absolute faith in each other. Clearly please heed the content warnings, as this is a very dark book. As with all of this brilliant author’s work, this is about exploring how screwed up our world can be and the bloodletting so many survivors must do on their own to cleanse the festering wounds committed the rampantly toxic treatment of survivors of violence. So often it is battered, bruised, broken, and oppressed folks who tend to the needs and injuries of others who are battered and abused. I see here an indictment of countries and cultures that have allowed economic and social structures that say some people’s wealth and even their entertainment is worth more than other people’s lives and humanity.

I received this book as an ARC and all opinions are strictly my own.

I've never read a book I didn't like by this author and again, I'm certainly not disappointed! If non-con/dub-con is not your thing, don't pick up this book.

I started it yesterday and couldn't put it down until done!
It starts with MC1, Duncan, trying to resolve an issue in his past before committing to his fiance Axel, who is a shy computer geek. Delves a little bit into the mental effects of bullying in later life, however, his foray into the past brings him back to his old hometown where things go "off course".
The seedier side of life rears it's head when Duncan is taken, altered and used in a high money sex ring which bets on deviant sex acts they wish to see performed. The more depraved they are, the more money they pay to see it happen. All through the dark web of course!
The "Doctor" in the story thinks that there is something more to Duncan than meets the eye, but doesn't explore further and Duncan doesn't let him know that they have the wrong guy as he knows he would be disposed of. He's counting on Axel and his best friend Tiny getting him out of this situation.
The sexual acts they are put through are definitely "dark" although there are some really nice tender moments delving into life situations that are probably true to life for some people, making you think about what's actually going on around you - not a bad thing! Is it too far-fetched when it comes to the body "modifications" used? I don't think so!!
Great read as usual.
Great story

DNF at 20%. I really don't know why I've got this as a recommendation or what was the book the other reviewers read. It was clearly not the one I've tried to read. My book was mind numbly boring and poorly edited. There were repeating scenes for no obvious reason but raising the word count and trying the reader's patience. The MC may have been building up to be sympathetic, but since the world building and character introduction were sorely lacking, we still don't know enough about him at this stage to be invested in his fate. Don't waste your time on this, there's gotta be better free BDSM erotica on the internet.

This was a journey that put a huge rock insight me and this content needs some time afterwards to digest and sort it out. But is also really amazing to see such strength and determination in the character of Duncan and follow the whole development.
I am really impressed by the straight writing and the capability to take me out of my comfort zone and at the same time to shatter my faith in our human society and think a bit more and deeply. I am very thankful for the deep true emotion and the HFN and stay a believer that there are people who are strong and willing to face the abysses and take action.

Wow! Dirty, gritty, and amazing. This was a well written and amazing book. Although it was not real, the fact that it does have real life aspects in it made the book all the more amazing. I honestly enjoyed reading this and I absolutely love the writer. This book is definitely not for the faint at heart, but if love powerful alpha males and dub con then this book is for you.

Heed the warning: Really dark and depraved with a lot of non-con sex. Once that said, I loved the banter between Duncan and Dr. Malcom, loved how Duncan cared for Tim, loved Axel's strength... Cutting it short, I loved the story.

This is the first of Meraki Dark's books I've read and I want more.
The story line of deceit, lust, sexual forcings - right up my alley. being able to get into something so dark and disturbing once in a while is - to me - like taking an ambrosia. I will definitely be looking out for more from this author.
Highly recommend, but be aware of triggers.

Dark, very dark. I'll process later.

Dark. Non-con. Kidnapping. It was the characters that drove me to keep reading. I loved them all. Even the bad guys.

This was... a lot. Definitely not for everyone because it's dark as fuck. I actually had this on my TBR for quite a while. I knew what I was getting into from the blurb, but it still surprised me a few times.

First, I have to admit that the reason for the rating is mainly due to the writting style. It was difficult to get into the story at the beginning because it felt strange, it just didn't flow well. Despite that, I kept going because the plot just had me too invested and I wanted to know how it ended.

Onto the good things, I believe it wasn't a bad attempt at combining the dark erotica elements and storytelling, even when at times it felt a bit repetitive. To be honest, I skimmed through the other pov at times because I mostly cared about Duncan's side of the story, so I can't comment the execution about the rescue attempt.

However, I can say that it does a generally good job on the depravity lol. The idea of a guy being kidnapped and people experimenting on him, pumping him full of an aphrodisiac type of drug, and then making him fight and assault anyone that is in front of him? Very dark. Despite that, I really liked the bond between Duncan and Tim, as fucked up as it was.

The ending left me hanging though, I guess it's a cliffhanger intended to hook me into the rest if the series. Perhaps I will read it eventually because I do want to know what else happens with Duncan and his fiance, which is a devastating story in itself.

Not what I was expecting. Let’s just say if you have triggers you might want to back away from this book. With that being said, wow. I’ve been on a random M/M kick lately and got recommended this novel by a friend and was a little iffy on it. Anyway, I love how dark this author goes to portray someone getting kidnapped then “played” on the dark web. I know to us non-darkweb folk it’s seems taboo, but this type of stuff happens on a daily. Rich people bored out of their minds, organizations grabbing children/adults for their games, and all those sick people watching the less fortunate defiled and tortured for their enjoyment. Well done. Now on to book two.

How do you rate/review a book you were on the verge of abandoning most of the way through, but you still need to know what happens next? Pretty brutal non-con with no titillation vibe. Duncan Campbell is abducted off the street, deliberately addicted to multiple designer drugs, “enhanced”, and made to fight, fuck, and be fucked.

They thought Duncan was a recently released felon, a pimp with no real ties. But they abducted a man with the same name, but an entirely different life. He had a white hat fiancee (Axel Clayborn) at home and a retired SEAL of a best friend (Tiny) who were determined to save his ass.

The rescue attempt was a good pressure release from the brutal non-con.

Slow and a bit murky start to this series, but in usual Meraki style the plot thickens and becomes clear in book 2. The characters start out as black or white, but slowly the grey and multidimensional aspects sneaks up and the moral line is not so clear cut anymore.

I enjoy Meraki's writing style (and creative brain) immensely.
