Ghosts, Ghouls, and Haunted Houses is a 9-book box set of paranormal, supernatural horror stories encapsulating two similar series written respectively by Carrie King and Caroline Clark. The first series involves a haunted monastery called Briar Park, its history, and eventual end. The other involves a haunting at Greyfield Manor. Both are remarkably similar thematically and probably do a disservice to each other in being collected together, because the stories feel redundant although they try not to be. I believe that if a writer is going to compile a haunted house history as a collection of novels, then the stories should be sufficiently distinct that they should build on the previous supernatural mythos while layering complexity upon each tale. By repeating the same tropes, I found the stories rather dull, but in the compilations' defense, this might be a "me" issue. I like to call myself a hardcore horror fan and admittedly supernatural, paranormal is not where I find my yayas. A bump in the night is just not going to quite do it for me. "Hardcore horror fan" may sound pretentious and probably it is, but that's how I feel. 2 and a half Grey Geeks translate to 2 Goodreads stars.

Ghosts are deadly

This is an excellent book, the stories within are just right for all lovers of spooky tales. You can really imagine being in these places as you read the books and each one is nerve tingly, not to be read before bed!
Imagine an estate so far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life , where lurks to catch the unwary and to destroy them in hideous ways. These books contain such places and fodder for the reader who loves to be scared.
A must read for all of a strong will and curious nature, but remember curiosity killed the cat! Don't get caught as you read these books.

Bunch a short stories, again. Some good, some bad, again. If you like this sort of thing, try these. Pick your own good and bad.

Ghosts, Ghouls, and Haunted Houses by Caroline Clark 07/02/3019
The Haunting of Briar Park is the first collaboration I read by these two talented women. I have loved everything they have come up with together and individually. Now is a chance to read eight of their collaborative efforts already published plus one new book never before seen. Don’t miss out on this great deal.

The Haunting of Briar Park series
Something Evil This Way Comes book 1
Carrie King is quite an undervalued writer in her genre with a number of exceptional books available!

Brother Nicholas has grown up in the abbey. Being pious, following the rules, doing as he is told is the only life he knows. Until one fateful day that changes his life forever. Unbeknownst to the brothers of the abbey, locked beneath their feet in the crypt is a book of the greatest evil, the Book of Khyra.

For just a few minutes Father Mathew leaves the crypt door unlocked on this day, and the innocent monk is drawn by the book. Once the ancient evil is unleashed, there is no putting it back, and poor Bother Nicholas is doomed.

To save the abbey and the other monks, Nicholas is banished to Briar Park, a house in the distant part of the abbey grounds. Once there, Brother Nicholas is given the means to make a solitary life for himself till the end of his days. But how will he cope with the evil menace that has attached itself to him? Will distance be enough to keep others safe? Come along and meet the evil in the house in Briar Park!

The Haunting of Greyfield Manor series
Dark Secret book one
Another great collaboration between these two authors! This time the haunting ground is a three-hundred-year-old manor house. What terrible acts lie in its past to threaten visitors of today? Will its evil prevail? Dive into The Dark Secret the exciting first episode.

Lord Greyfield’s wife didn’t fare well in the secluded countryside. She thought she would have it made marrying the wealthy Lord, but she didn’t count on the loneliness. She didn’t want to give up her wealth and position, just her husband. Lady Greyfield took a lover and plotted her husband’s murder. The Lord didn’t go quietly. He screamed his curse for vengeance until his dying breath.

Modern day Greyfield Manor is a bed and breakfast. Tyffany has gone to great expense to book the entire manor for a weekend. She is hoping it will be just the thing to save her marriage. Tyffany made a terrible mistake and had a short-lived affair. Her guilt made her confess to her husband, Wylie. He hasn’t left her, but the relationship is definitely shattered.

Will a weekend in the country help Tyffany bridge the gap between them? Wylie is very moody, even on the trip, but his mood swings seem worse once they settle in at Greyfield Manor. He is fascinated with the house and has even learned a bit about its history. Wylie seems much more interested in exploring than spending time with his wife.

Tyffany isn’t having a great time. She has felt ill since arriving and a little spooked by the old house. Cabinets keep opening on their own, and the atmosphere feels oppressive. Is there something wrong with the manor, or is it just the trouble between the couple?

The Haunted Gallery
Another great story from Caroline Clark. This one will give you shivers! Would you pay the price to bring back a lost loved one?

Harry Ainsley has had a terrible year. He finally lost his beloved grandfather to a debilitating disease. On top of that blow, his personal life stinks and his business isn’t doing too well either.

Harry’s business, an art gallery, is about all he has left. His one consolation in his loss is the number of great paintings his grandfather left behind. Showing some of them at the gallery with every show has helped him cope with the loss.

Lately however the gallery has come under a cloud. His night watchmen have been disappearing without a trace. Worst of all is the police suspicion hanging over Harry’s head. He was after all the last to see the watchmen before they just vanished, and it seems it must be an inside job.

If the police can’t catch the culprit, Harry is determined to do so himself. Is there a simple solution or is something sinister at work?

Nothing creative here.
The writing is painfully simplistic and could deal with a good edit to remove redundancy and some really epic missteps of grammar.
Dialogue is clunky and each character seems to speak with the same singular voice.
There are a few mix ups of present and past tense that were particularly jarring.
The horror was mostly via violent rape or animal dismemberment which came across as amatuerish, uncreative, and, surprisingly enough- bland in a haunted house theme when every possibility is open to a creative writer.

A few adjectives would have been welcome to help establish atmosphere.

Maybe ok for a first attempt... I only read through the first three books before fatiging, but in my opinion these should have been practice experiments and not treated as publishable work.

Great reading

First two books in this collection, I've read already. Was about to let this one go, when I glanced at A Grandads Love. I hadn't read this one , and almost missed out. It was a geart story. It's disappointing when several books are put together, and you've read some already. I gave it five stars anyway, because I had enjoyed them the first time around.

Spectral nightmares

All the books in the series were scary. The storyline was fluid. There was never a boring moment. I have been a fan of both these authors and have read most of their books and will be reading more.

A great selection of ghost stories. Unlike the ones for children, these have an actual story behind how the ghosts came to be. In many cases it was a tragic death that lead to their inability to move on. I was gifted this from the author.
