An outstanding book. The classic work on Palestinians in Israel, with good reason. Jiryis documents the brutal nature of the military government under which his people lived for the first 18 years of Israel’s existence while noting that many of its features continued under another form after its abolition. He reviews the many ways in which Israel forces Palestinians off their land, and devotes a full chapter to Israeli atrocities against its Palestinian citizens (his account of the Kafr Qasem massacre is the most detailed and harrowing I’ve read yet). This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the abominable conditions under which Palestinians in Israel lived for the first quarter century after statehood.
Of course, their mistreatment continues to this day. And much of what Jiryis recounts in this book could apply with only minor modifications to the West Bank today. On that point, if you want to read about the Israeli permit regime in the occupied territories I would recommend Yael Berda’s Living Emergency.
