The Truth About Gretchen
Gretchen Holloway, in her final year of graduate school, is in the throes of auditioning actors for her thesis film, inspired by a murdered young football star who has haunted her dreams for two years. Gretchen believes making the movie will be cathartic. But instead of freeing her, embarking upon the film production unleashes a sequence of events that lead Gretchen to conclude that she’s the reincarnation of the young man.
Regina Wilson has always wanted to be an actress. When her agent gets her an audition for a role in Gretchen’s film, which eerily mirrors one of the worst events of her life—the unsolved murder of her older brother, Robert—she’s hard-pressed to go through with it. Upon fleeing, she leaves behind a keepsake that features Robert’s photo. Gretchen sees the picture and recognizes Robert from her dreams. She tracks down Regina, and after being rebuffed and called crazy, Gretchen’s unexplainable knowledge of events in Robert’s life eventually convinces Regina that Gretchen is Robert reincarnated.
The two decide to have his case reopened, but their significant others are dead set against it, and the police, who believe that Robert’s death was gang-related, are less than cooperative. However, Gretchen is desperate to get justice for her former self, and Regina wants justice for her brother. The women piece together the final week of Robert’s life. And the deeper they delve into his past; one shocking revelation follows another, leaving them wondering who they can trust and if they’ll live long enough to find Robert’s killer and bring him to justice.

This is a Suspense book. I have to say this is a super unique book, and I cannot say I have read anything like this book. There is weird parts, but those weird parts is what makes this book so unique. I loved the characters. This book was told in the point of view of Gretchen and Regina because the chapters switches off from Gretchen and Regina point of view. The suspense in this book was super good, and I really loved the ending. This is an emotional storyline that really shows what happens when bad people buys out what should be good people. There is so much put into this book, but it is so well-written. Great book. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

The Truth About Gretchen was an interesting book. In it, you will meet Regina and Gretchen. Throughout the book, you realize that Gretchen is having a bunch of nightmares from the past. It's just not her past. So, she tries to put the puzzle pieces together to figure out what actually happened to the guy who keeps dying in her nightmares.
Enter Regina. She is Robert's sister and hasn't gotten over her brother's untimely death twenty-six years ago. Together, her and Gretchen are going to figure out what actually went down the night he died and hopefully get justice for it all.
Now I really liked these two because it was interesting to see their point of views. It was also pretty cool to see how they used each clue to bring them closer to the killer/suspect. I was pretty much on the edge of my seat until the big reveal and I'm very happy that I randomly found this book on kindle unlimited.
In the end, each twist and turn gave me chills. I also think Robert and Patricia got the justice they were looking for.

Definitely a book to read. I was pulled into the story and it did not let go. The book is well written with a strong character driven story and many a twists including the identification of who actually was responsible/involved in the death of Robert.

Thomas begins this tale with a Patriot jersey clad redhead, Gretchen Holloway, laying in bed next to her fiance Lance. She is reliving a nightmare and soon you learn it's been 2 years since she really got any good sleep.
Into the story steps forthy tw0 old Regina Wilson who introduces, Robert Parker.
Robert was gunned down on an important day in history, January 1, 1991. Robert was only 24 years old at the time.
Regina is going to audition for Gretchen but backs out at the last moment leaving behind an object that can hold or transport something. And readers learn this will forever tie the two together.
Subsequently, Gretchen finds the object and recognizes the man from her nightmare - the man she believes she once was.
This intricate story is written in the first-person present. I love the significance of the drops of water and the way other characters are pulled into this story. The conversational passage of transmigration is intriguing and Thomas's writing style is strong and allows readers to have a vivid sense of effect.

If you like books written in first person, then you will like The Truth About Gretchen. You will also like how this author has a talent for describing backgrounds, surroundings, and her characters in vivid detail. The plot and storyline was interesting, and held my attention. I really like Gretchen and Regina. And the POV would switch back and forth between them--Gretchen would have a chapter and then Regina would get a chapter, back and forth. Sometimes I would get confused as to who was talking, and that's because I only like to read in third person. But if you're used to multiple POV's then you won't have a problem.
I thought there was a bit too much of what the characters were thinking. Sometimes it would take up entire pages. And the subject of reincarnation is something I stay away from. If I had known this would be an intricate part of this story, I would not have read it. It was recommended to me, and I just bought it.
All in all, if you like what I've described, then you will like this novel.

This book brings to the reader the concept of re-birth or re-incarnation. The plot is intriguing whereby the protagonist has dreams of someone who was murdered. Initially, she is not aware that it is about a real person and she embarks on a journey to turn these dreams into a film.
The story follows Gretchen as her path crosses with Regina, Robert's sister. At first resistant to the whole concept, Regina starts to believe that Gretchen might be able to uncover and solve the mystery behind her brother's death. The story is well thought out, but at times it seems a little stretched. At times it was even difficult to connect to the main protagonist, but it becomes easier as we progress through the book. Her strong sense of justice and the need to help prevail.
Overall this book is a decent read depending on the tastes of the reader!

Characters and dialogue are realistic, as are the two ladies doing the investigation. Their thoughts and actions are easily followed as the story shifts from past to present and each person's voice is heard. It will keep you guessing and very little is predictable. No spoilers from me, but the supernatural concept is different from what most of us have grown up with understanding ,but, hey,it's fiction!

Boasting an intriguing premise that pulled me in right from the start, “The Truth About Gretchen” is a suspense story with a very unique twist. The concept of reincarnation and past lives therapy has always held a certain fascination for me, so it is little wonder that I found this storyline so appealing. Certain secondary characters, however, I found less appealing, so that did detract some from my overall enjoyment of this book. Still, the author spun a pretty decent tale, and if you are willing to suspend belief, sit back and enjoy the ride, you’ll find yourself getting lost is this intriguing, easy-to-read story that will keep you guessing along the way.

I was always told never to judge a book by its cover, but there was something about the cover of this novel, The Truth About Gretchen by Alretha Thomas, that kept drawing me. I studied the picture several times trying to decide what it revealed. I tried to guess its meaning. Finally, after so many guesses, it was clear to me that there was no other way to be sure of its depth unless I read the book. Reading the details gave me an unbelievable shock. I never would have guessed in a million years. Alretha Thomas has done it again...created another page turner. She captivates her readers from the beginning with her method of unfolding the two main characters, Regina and Gretchen. When we seek them out, one major secret is disclosed, and it is a powerful and unique development. Are there really only two ladies?Because the points of view change, we experience omniscience. We hear the characters' voices, see their emotions, understand their frustrations and tumble through their back stories seeing a consistent determination to find out who murdered Robert. One of the things that I loved most in the beginning was the recurring image of the "water bottle" and seeing its significance unfold. This motif was brilliant with a fine touch of true literary technique. ...and then there is the ending. What an ending! However, Thomas is not finished yet. After finding the answer to this mystery, there is a powerful concluding speech that melds us all together. It is that inevitable experience we all have when we lose a loved one to tragedy. This was our son, or our daughter, our niece, nephew, grandchild, friend...and we have lost a spark that ignited love. There are undeniable truths that Thomas unveils at the turning of each page. She pulls us into her world and every moment...every demand...every mountain climbed by these characters is worth this reading experience. The Truth About Gretchen begins with Gretchen Holloway hosting auditions for a film she’s making in her last year of graduate school. She has been haunted for two years by recurring dreams/nightmares of a young man being murdered. She also has no idea who the guy is. All she knows is that the need to make a movie based on these dreams is a need like no other.
Regina Wilson has struggled for twenty years with the unsolved murder of her brother. She lands an audition for the movie Gretchen is making, but, is disturbed at how eerie the events are to her brother’s murder. She makes her way to the auditions, only to breakdown at the thought of actually going through with the audition. She leaves in a near panic and has no idea how an item she leaves behind will change her life and the lives of others.
The Truth About Gretchen is another well written story by Alretha Thomas. Gretchen and Regina are both relatable from the beginning. However, it’s Regina, at least for me, that pulls you in. Her steadfast need to find out what really happened the night that her brother was murdered is emotional on one hand and endearing on the other. Even though both Gretchen and Regina are doubted from the very beginning of their quest for justice, they know that they won’t allow anyone, or anything, get in their way. The story is wrought with intrigue and mystery, but it is the emotion that makes it a page turner, which is, in my humble opinion, what makes Thomas a standout author. A Riveting and Powerful Murder Mystery
This narrative is a fantastic page-turner with a blend of diverse characters, terrific dialogue, cliff-hanging scenarios, suspense, drama, romance, and murder. Gretchen Holloway, a graduate student, has nightmares about a man whom she does not know and believes making a film will aid her in untangling this mystery. Regina Wilson, an actress, is asked to audition for the leading role but refuses to try out for the part, but when Gretchen finds a water bottle, she will be a seer to a murder that occurred twenty-six years ago, which will cause her to bond with Regina and playing amateur detectives, taking you on an emotional roller coaster ride, divulging some secrets and lies, betrayal, envy, scandal, police corruption, and shocking revelations, gradually leading up to an ending that will leave you speechless. I like that Gretchen and Regina have supportive men in their lives, and even though they each face some trials and tribulations, the women characters are more alike than they are different. And even though they may not agree on various issues, the support, friendship, and inspiration that Gretchen, Kate, Patty, Cookie and Sarah demonstrate are a testimony to true camaraderie.

This was such an amazing, emotional and different kind of suspense book. I thought it was going to be predictable, it was far from that. I loved the dual point of views between Gretchen and Regina. This book had so many different elements, it was hard to categorize it as just suspense, supernatural/fantasy or young adult; it was all that and more! The story itself? Very unique from start to finish. As a reader, you will experience every detail Gretchen is going through.
I am so glad I found this book!!! Why I did not stumble on this before makes m e feel stupid, but better late than never. Everyone needs to read this is they want a different kind of suspense book. This book has all the elements. If I could this a million stars, I would! It was that good.

Oh my gosh, I love, love, love this story. I have read several of this author’s books, and I like them all, but this one…I could not put it down. It’s a wonderfully written, imaginative story. I loved the strong female characters, their determination, and their support of one another. I also really liked the spiritual aspects of the story. This is a fast-paced, gripping story with some plot twists I didn’t see coming. I highly recommend this one.

Very unique storyline
This was one of the most unique and unexpected storyline I have come across in a while. I had a hard time following every once and a while bc the timelines switches and all the back and forth between Gretchen and Robert. But all in all entertaining and quite unique.

I really enjoyed this book. I was a little scared it might be a gruesome, but it was not. I enjoyed the parallels of Gretchen's and Robert's lives. I know that a lot of people probably get turned off by the idea or reincarnation, but I really enjoyed that part of this book. I can only imagine how crazy Gretchen's family was by her insistence that is what was going on. I loved Regina. She was a strong, capable, black woman. She held her own with her husband, mother, step-father, step-daughter and Gretchen. I really enjoyed the bond that developed between Regina and Gretchen. I can't imagine how hard it would be to lose a sibling and have some young girl of a difference race claim to be that reincarnated sibling.
I liked how this book ended. The only thing I have a hard time accepting is that the family rejoiced. I have seen a lot of Dateline and Dateline type shows and the family even after getting answers still feel a void or a loss. They are never happy with the verdict even when it is in their favor.

I liked how this book ended. The only thing I have a hard time accepting is that the family rejoiced. I have seen a lot of Dateline and Dateline type shows and the family even after getting answers still feel a void or a loss. They are never happy with the verdict even when it is in their favor.

Good mystery but disappointing last chapter...
I was intrigued by this mystery centered around reincarnation, which I believe in, and sent it to the top of my TBR list. I'm a slow reader since I recreate the scenes in my mind's eye, give each character their own voice and soak up each scene like a sponge. As I read along, enjoying this story, I wondered why I've not read more of the many free mysteries in my Kindle Library; however, when I got to the last chapter in this book I was reminded: the author destroyed the integrity of this great mystery with a totally junk and unrealistic last chapter. No spoilers but let's just say that witnesses in a murder case would not be swept up into the media spotlight the instant the FBI discovers them. The mystery itself was presented brilliantly, but the end was way too far over the top unbelievable I'm very sad to say. There were less than a dozen proofreading typos and the cover was perfect. I'll avoid books by this author in the future.

The Truth about Gretchen could also be titled the Truth about Robert. Very early on it's apparent that Gretchen, a 24 year old white, writer/director is the reincarnation of a black man who died on the same day that Gretchen was born.
By circumstance, Gretchen is having a casting call to which Robert's still grieving sister attends. What ends up connecting these two women is a water bottle and a desire to find Robert's killer.
I believe this is the first reincarnation story I have read. Unfortunately, this tale didn't hold up well years after publication. I was put off by the male characters referring to their significant others as baby girl, good girl, etc. Having to answer to their men all the way down to where and when and why they are going somewhere or even to whom they are speaking to on the phone bothered me enough that it was a distraction.
What I did enjoy was the female friendships and connections.

Written in first-person The Truth about Gretchen is a challenging voice, but Alretha Thomas knocks it out the ballpark. A captivating story of two women a screen writer; Gretchen and Robert’s sister; Regina brought together by a tragedy. The strong female characters have such determination in what their steps will be and their support of one another. As you are reading you will assume you know who killed Robert and your heart will begin to ache but the other relationship that will pull at your heart strings is between Gretchen and Regina.
It’s a fast-paced story with several twist I didn’t see coming. If you enjoy mystery and a heart pulsing story of suspense this is the book for you.

I heard about this book via NetGalley and thought I'd give it a try. This is my first novel by Alretha Thomas, and I've already ordered another!
It's not like anything I've read before -- a story about reincarnation, involving a young white woman and a young black man, film student and football star -- and how they work together to solve the young man's murder. The murder mystery/chase aspect of the story really picks up in the second half, and I truly enjoyed the ride.
When I wasn't reading the book, I was thinking about the book and its richly-written characters. That's the mark of a good story for me. Rated 4/5 stars, will recommend!

Holy WOW! This book was impossible to put down, I read it at a blistering pace. It’s not possible to not, the author did such a phenomenal job of making it the perfectly readable and thrilling story that it is! I’m blown away by her prowess; I’ll definitely be looking up more of her work. Regina and Gretchen were perfection, and I couldn’t have loved the supporting characters more! It was a fast, twisty read until the very last page. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my free arc in exchange for my honest opinion! It was magnificent!

Don't Start The Truth About Gretchen Late at Night....
Since you won't be able to put this book down, don't start it late at night! Gretchen believes she is the reincarnation of a murdered young man who has been haunting her dreams. When she meets the man's grieving sister, they set out to find his murderer so they can both move on with their lives.
While the premise may seem fantastic, the author does a very good job of making the paranormal element believable in this suspenseful and exciting thriller.
I will look forward to reading other books by Alretha Thomas.

Imagine dreaming about your own death, but you are a different person. Gretchen appears to be sharing a body with the soul of a murdered football star. Trying to figure out if she is crazy, Who can she trust? With help from her "sister", a friend and a waitress, she searches out a killer. Every time I think I had everything figured out, my theory changed. I stayed up until 4A.M. It was that good. Thank you Netgalley!

The Truth About Gretchen, by Alretha Thomas, was one of those books that while I wasn't actually reading it I was thinking about the story. I believe in reincarnation (which is a major part of the plot) and wish there were more of these kinds of stories to read. Ms Thomas does an excellent job of describing the events and scenes, making the reader feel they are where the action is taking place. Boasting an intriguing premise that pulled me in right from the start, “The Truth About Gretchen” is a suspense story with a very unique twist. The concept of reincarnation and past lives therapy has always held a certain fascination for me, so it is little wonder that I found this storyline so appealing. Certain secondary characters, however, I found less appealing, so that did detract some from my overall enjoyment of this book. Still, the author spun a pretty decent tale, and if you are willing to suspend belief, sit back and enjoy the ride, you’ll find yourself getting lost is this intriguing, easy-to-read story that will keep you guessing along the way.

Wow, what a unique story! I read a lot and I've never read anything worth a plot even close to being similar. This is such a well written thriller that I couldn't put it down. I actually read it in a single day, because I HAD to know what happened next. I hope Alretha Thomas writes many more books and that they are all as good as this one.

Read through NetGalley. I read this book in less than 24 hours - it was that interesting. I set everything else aside and just read this book. I don't know how I feel about reincarnation or the spirit world but it certainly sounded logical the way it all played out in this story. I would definitely recommend this book.
