Katherine made it all the way to Maine before the bounty hunters caught her.
Not even her magic was enough to keep them from taking her back to her Mom.
The head of the most powerful Coven in New Orleans is dead by the time they get there. But before Kat can even grieve, her aunt kicks her out of the ancestral home and puts another bounty on her head.
This time it's for keeps.
She would run away again, but they would never stop hunting her. Or she could build a coven of her own, the group's magic a form of stronger protection while she searches for her mother's killer.
But first, she needs a familiar and she can't go wrong with a classic cat, can she?
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see *s differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-) ------------
I received a review copy of Ware the Cats of War from the author and because I had listened to other books of his from other genres, I thought why not even though I normally would have probably passed over stories/books in this genre. This story grabbed my attention right off, it starts with action and ends with action, and while it is the first in a series it does conclude the first “chapter” in the overall story arc and sets the stage for what comes next. Interestingly enough, I have found myself very curious what happens next and what’s in store for Kat and the crew. I can now add another genre to my reading/listening pleasure – thanks for the introduction, Chris. Astrid Morgan’s narration was excellent, her voices for the characters and obvious enthusiasm for the story made this a great listening experience.
I liked the main character Kat, and her friend Linda. I also like the Familiars, and many of the ideas in the book, but the writing was terrible. This one needed more than an edit to fix. Not enough description to picture settings, uneven pacing, story relies too much on coincidence. Cute animals though.
She thought she could escape... ...she was wrong. They hunt her down and return her to New Orleans – only for her to find out her mom is dead, and her Aunt is running the show! How can she survive they will hunt her wherever she goes. Katherine draws her line in the sand! And begins to build her own coven and find her own familiar. Can she do all of this before they hunt her down and kill her? "This is a brilliant read ... well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with and wonderful world building. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the book with no monetary compensation.
I found this to be an entertaining story with fun characters, an interesting and involving premise, but with a huge cliff-hanger that leaves you hanging. A witch on the run is brought back home after the death of her mother and goes into conflict with her aunt for control of the coven, The narration is good but not much range in the character voices, but easy to listen to. I received a complimentary copy and am leaving a honest voluntary review.
Fast paced, very enjoyable read. But ... nooooooo. It ended on a cliffhanger and the next story is not released yet. I found the characters intriguing, though occasionally confusing as there was little explanation who they were. Loved the familiars although I got some of them a bit mixed up too. Possibly needs a a bit more work on continuity. Occasional typos. Received as complimentary copy from the author in return for an honest review.
Interesting concept with a fast-paced storyline in which the MC reacts to the actions of those around her. Events force her to try to understand her place in a world that she chose to leave before being forcibly returned.
Although it was my pleasure to receive this free book, it was completely my choice to share my honest review.
I read about 20% of this and gave up. I did not like any or the characters, their actions, or the story being told. If you don't mind a mean witch coven story, it should be fine.
A familiar that might just be more than they bargained for
A great read. A witch who has been on the run for years from her mother is finally tracked down and captured. Her escape should have been a smooth operation but she is thwarted and captured again. Now she has been delivered to the family home only to find out that her mother has been assassinated, her aunt has taken over the Coven and is after her blood. Can she set up her own coven and ensure her safety. An old friend, a Voodoo Queen, a maine coon, a safer tooth tiger, a stripper, a young woman, a huge dog (with her own dog), a blood oath, assassins, truth about dragons and the death of her Grandmother. Who is trying to kill her family off? Wonderful characters that fairly leap off the page. Great dialogue and a story line that you will want to keep reading.
