"Love isn't the happy bullshit the card companies and jewelers want us to believe it is...It's work. Sometimes it's pain."

Thoroughly complicated. Yep, those are the words that best sum up and describe the main characters.

When they're 'off' they're reckless, highly emotional, and destructive.

And when they're 'on', everything's all chummy, sunshines and rainbows.

Gosh, things were so frustrating at times, and yet, I was just a bleeding heart over these two.

Stephanie Hartwell is a struggling sports journalist looking for her big break.
Aleksandr "Alex/Sasha" Volynsky is hockey's volatile bad boy who has the looks, the talent, but not so good reputation on and off the ice.

When fate brings these two together, it's fireworks.

From pangs of first love tracing all the way back to high school, spanning almost a decade later, Stephanie and Alex have never forgotten...or gotten over each other.

But there's a catch.

Stephanie's engaged to be married...

Will these two have a second chance at love? Or are they simply just not meant to be?

I really liked this story, and I really did not. It was kind of a toss up between both. I so wanted Stephanie and Alex to find their HEA, but, I did not realize at what costs.

What with Stephanie's career on the line, her fiancee, and Alex's downward spiral into the darkness, it made me nail bitingly anxious as it did lay on the heartbreak and angst.

I'm not really sure where things can go from here with these characters, as I felt everything was tied up in a nice bow, but I'm curious to see where author Jennifer Loring plans to take bks 2 & 3 (as this series is supposed to be a trilogy).

I certainly hope that there won't be more bumps. I mean, what more can these two possibly go through? They've already been put through the ringer..been through hell and back. After all, no one ever said love was easy.

I say, if this trilogy solely focuses on the two of them, I hope to see more insight on Alex continues to cope and address his problem. it was such an eye opener and wonderful awareness to people who suffer from similar feelings and actions to address it and seek help.

All in all, a beautiful and enriching sports romance!

"You saved me from myself."

Heartache mixed with irritation

I have to say I couldn't put this down. It did have lots of my big no-nos written in it: cheating and I love you so much, but I am going to screw everything I can get my hands on, even though we broke up.

I liked Alex, but he was very self destructive and reckless. I know the Russian culture is not to show weakness, but he did that to a fault. He is sexy as hell, but his actions at times irritated the heck out of me.

Stephanie too has issues, but I do have to say she did suck it all up and start over.

The hockey part was good and there were twist in the plot. It did tend to get over dramatic at times. The talk of mental illness and seeking help was realistic. I just have a feeling that it is going to be a scapegoat for bad behavior in the next book.

A good read if you can handle the drama,. I want to read the next book, but I think I don't want to at the same time.

Stephanie is a reporter who is given the task of interviewing a star hockey player who is known not the care much for the media, so I guess you could say he is known as an A--. But when Stephanie goes for the interview, she discovers that he is her old flame from high school and he is dang ticked off at her for some reason which is told pretty much right away. Short story...flames get rekindled even after 8 years of not seeing each other. But he's still angry!

Aleksandr is Russian and I love the accent and the flirtatious bantering between him and Stephanie. But when it gets hot, I'm talking HOT! *fans self* As much as he is a jerk, I couldn't help but to like him. He has his sweet side and he

I am not into hockey and there was quite a bit of hockey plays and hockey talk throughout, so that aspect of the book was a bit too much for my taste, but I'm sure sports lovers/hockey lovers would love it.

I really liked it. There was angst, but it seemed complete at 30% then suddenly a twist happened and the angst hit. I wish it were a little cleaner and not seem like a complete book before that twist, but the creativity was definitely there.

Okay, so I'm going to get the one negative thing I have to say about Firebird out of the way so that I can sing it's praises like I really want to do. There is cheating and a lot of womanizing in this book. (If those two things bother you, this book is not for you.) It was disturbing to read about the two main characters having sex with other people -- especially when they're thinking about each other. Ewww. BUT I know this stuff happens in real life, so it won't make or a break a book for me. Now, on to the fun part!

Besides the cheating part, Firebird was an incredibly good romance. It was fast-paced and action packed. I couldn't put it down. Something new was always happening and the story was constantly building. I was surprised at the twists and turns that took place. Just when I thought the story might be coming to an end, something else would happen to take the story in a new direction.

I absolutely loved Aleksandr. To be honest, most of the time he was a big fat jerk. But I kind of loved that about him. He didn't hold back and once I knew why, I appreciated it even more. I don't want to give too much away, but I felt that his story was an important one. I loved the way his character developed over the entire book.

Stephanie, on the other hand, drove me nuts at times. One minute, she was a smart and tough chick. The next, she made horrible decisions. I liked her, but at times she made it hard to.

Together, Stephanie and Aleksandr were scorching HOT. They couldn't keep their hands off each other! There was a sweetness between the two of them that I loved -- especially from Aleksandr. He was so crude, but he had a secret soft spot when it came to Stephanie. It made me smile a lot.

As for the hockey, I liked that Jennifer Loring included some actual hockey plays and not just the players. It added another great dimension to the story. I don't know much about hockey, but it seemed realistic enough to me.

I would highly recommend Firebird to adult contemporary romance readers that love sports related romances.

I have been mad as hell since I finished this story, after the emotional trauma the author put me through. Why did I keep reading you may ask? I kept reading because I freakin LOVED LOVED LOVED the story, but Jennifer Loring has made the list of authors trying to kill me! Congrats!

Stephanie Hartwell is a journalist chasing the story of her career. Aleksandr Volynsky, the hockey superstar and bad boy, has been traded to the Seattle Earthquakes in huge talked about deal, and Stephanie demands the opportunity to prove herself by getting an exclusive interview. He hates the media, and they have a past but that's not going to stop her. Aleksandr, the Olympian and Stanley Cup Champion at 25, has achieved all of his goals but he's lonely. His lifestyle of drinking and random hook ups has been a failing attempt to forget the one girl that broke his heart, with his fame and fortune making it impossible to trust anyone. When he finally gets to a place where his heart is healing, tragedy strikes and his dark side comes out worse than ever. When he finally faces the truth behind his self-destructive behavior convince Stephanie to give him one last chance?

OMG my heart broke into a thousand pieces that were ripped out and set fire to. The character development is great, with secondaries that rounded the story out amazingly well. An addicting, gut wrenching, and well written story line flowed effortlessly. Jennifer Loring's fantastic writing style yanked big ugly tears out of me as I physically felt the pain of Stephanie and Aleksandr, and I had a hard time breathing on more than one occasion. She took a topic that can be a big source of controversy and wrote with great awareness and grace. The hockey scenes were very accurately written, and she weaved them together with romance perfectly. I don't want to forget to say that the sexy scenes are SMOKIN' HOT, and the love is realistically messy. Although I may or may not still be calling the author bad names, I'm a new fan so I happily HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This book....it brings so many feelings out. The one good thing about this book is that you actually feel everything that the characters are going thru. You feel pain during the breakups and injury, You feel joy during the happy and love moments. The author has a way of bringing you into the story and loving every minute of it or at least I did.
Alex, is a proud Russian and is determined to make his family proud with his hockey career. He's had to sacrifice some things along the way including Stefanie. They were best friends/lovers in school but that ended to soon. He has done some remarkable things like winning the Stanley Cup but also has a reputation of being a bad boy. He is traded to a team that desperately needs help. He is hurt and frustrated but still goes out and plays. He has never got over losing Stefanie.
Stefanie, is desperately trying to keep her sports journalist job and lands a job of a lifetime. It has it major throwbacks that she has to deal with all over again.. Sparks fly again but there's a problem, Stefanie is engaged to another man.
Alex and Stefanie are good together but have their fair share of problems, just like any relationship does but things go from good to bad in a instant for them. Both are dealing with a bunch of issues, Stefanie runs away while Alex turns to booze and women..not the best but during the healing process both realize that they aren't truly happy unless they are together. It's a roller coaster ride for the both of them but it does end happily for them. I really loved this story! It shows the realness of what can happen in relationships. Everyone has issues and its how we rise above them is how we show our what we're truly capable of. Stefanie and Alex definitely hit the highs and lows but rise above them to find their true selves, which is so remarkable. They find their true callings and where exactly they are supposed to be.

NHL Star, Aleksandr Volynsky, is traded to the Seattle Earthquakes expansion team. His high school sweetheart and current sports writer, Stephanie Hartwell, request an exclusive interview, reuniting them after eight years.

It has been a long time since a book made me cry. Considering I read three to four book a week that is saying a lot. Jennifer Loring’s Firebird is a believable and heartfelt story that I could not put down.

I loved Alex’s character. He is an incredible athlete but very lonely. He never loved anyone other than Stephanie. My heart really went out to him and everything he endures. He is a good person even though he does not believe that himself.

A couple of times I was a little ticked off at Stephanie. I felt she did not cut Alex enough slack. However, in all honesty, I would have probably acted similar to her. I liked that she also plays hockey, and that she stands up for herself at work.

I love that they quote Winnie the Pooh. As they say, he really is a very wise bear.

The hockey scenes are well-written. The characters are well developed. The title is perfect for the plot of the book. There is a lot that happens in this story that kept me captivated. Firebird keeps getting better the further you read it. It is a meaningful story with an intense plot. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Aleksandr Volynski came to the US from Russia to play Hockey. Instant sparks flew for his high school linguistics coach and fellow classmate. He never thought he'd get to play a sport he loved for a living and find the love of his life. Their blissful time together is cut short when he returns to Russia, promising they'll be together again. When it seems that will never happen he turns into your stereotypical sports star with endless women and alcohol.
Stephanie Hartwell only had one true love, and it's not her fiancé. After eight years the opportunity arises for her to interview Aleksandr for a sports magazine. The sparks haven't died but can they possibly make things work?
I love the fact that Jennifer wrote in duel point of views. You get to see how each of the characters feel and the reasons for the things the do. There's so much emotion to deal with. This was an amazing story of finding lost loves, losing everything, injuries, and second and third chances. When love is on the line, sometimes you have to deal with your own demons and move on before you can move forward. I'll also put out there that I absolutely love a man who is strong but is also not afraid to show emotion and cry a little. We saw every side of the characters from their strength and love to their vulnerability and self doubt. I'll definitely be reading more from this author.

Looking for a heartfelt story that you cannot put down Jennifer Loring’s Firebird is that story. Flying in to this world of hockey, enjoyable & lively characters, love and a plot that will keep you reading it what this story it! Both Aleksandr and Stephanie are strong characters that play well off one another.
The writing style of Jennifer Loring is wonderfully done. Her writing pulls you in and brings to like that scene of these pages. Reading about hockey is kinda’ new to me, only read a few book with hockey in it but she doesn’t suck a great job of writing the sense that I can easily see it in my head!
I think one of my favorite parts of this story is that Aleksandr and Stephanie has a past. They already one each other but us the readers get to take the journey and learn what they already do. The cover of these book fits there’s darkness and brightness with the pages.
This is a pager turner! Loveable characters! And wonderful plot, that you won’t want to put down!

This was a very different read to what I was expecting but it made it an amazing read. It is difficult to put into words how this made me feel as I feel as though I am still processing feelings and events.

Stephanie needs to get the story of her career by interviewing ice hockey bad boy, Aleksandr. She has a past with him, one that they have both not fully got over. Life is complicated though as Stephanie is engaged to someone else and the attraction between Aleksandr and Stephanie is still there.

What makes this stand out though is the events of the second half of the book. When a life changing event strikes one of them their world comes tumbling down as they come to terms with the changes.

This was very well written. I felt complete empathy for the characters as they dealt with a difficult subject.

I absolutely loved the beginning of this book which is why it pains me to say the last half just fell flat for me. I fell in love with both the characters and my heart hurt for the things that they had to go through and smile at other times. A bit past the middle of the book it turned into the back and forth feelings for the both of them. Then it seemed like a lot of filler information that really didn't need to be in the book was added and it made the book a bit choppy for me and drawn out. The characters were great and the story line was great as well just a little to much added material that could have been left out.

This book was amazing! I loved the storyline about young first love and unexpected second chances. The characters were well written and developed. Not whiny monologue characters that you see in some books, going on and on about should they or shouldn't they. The spark between Aleksandr and Stephanie is real and the chemistry is there. I couldn't put it down once I started and ended up with a pretty good book hangover.

I couldn't put the book down after the first 10 pages or so. It's an interesting mix with loads of good ingredients:

1) Fist of all, the mmc is a round, complex caracter you can't help but fall in love with - his not inconsiderable number of flaws gets explained away if you will - or at least rationalized - by the end of the novel. It's how we all like it: his bad boy image simply masks ... tadaaa .. a perfectly sweet, loving, deep (fill in any number of positive adjectives) sex-god. And I'm not being sarcastic here - he really is.

2) The story is well developped and well-though-out, plotwise and characterwise/psychologically. It doesn't get boring even if or because the couple is annoyingly complicated most of the time. I promise you, sometimes you will want to shout out: Call him/her already! Also, there are a few really cute Winnie-the-Pooh quote included throughout the book:-).

3) The writing is good: it's easy to read, at times poetic without being cheesy, and polished linguistically (as opposed to sloppy writing). There's a good balance between third-person narration and dialogue, as well as some inner monologue.

4) Oh, and let's not forget the beautiful cover!! Suggestive, sexy, with a hint of mystery (what do the tats/the bird mean?). Uncommoly classy for the genre...

What I'm not so sure about is the fmc: without giving away too much, I have to say, in comparison to the mmc she's quite flat and dislikeable - and let me tell you, my dislike of her goes beyond the usual "he's too good for her, I want him for myself"-effect we're all familiar with in romances. Her behaviour is really sh**y at times. I didn't get the mmc's love for her. She just happened to be his first girlfriend...

Another thing I'm not so sure about, is the "trilogy" bit as stated on the cover. It feels to me like the story's been told - again, without wanting to give away anything: in the last 50 pages, a lot of romantic and life-changing things happen that could have been saved for a second volume.

However, I remain hopeful that I actually will love the second and third volume as much as the first! Will let you know guys...

I fully recommend this novel to everyone looking for a unique, compelling love story with complex heroes who aren't always predictable or above reproach (but still totally adorable!). It is set in the world of professional hockey, which also sets it apart from other novels. It isn't for the faint of heart, though, since both she and he have some serious issues to deal with ().

Review:

This story started out with so much promise. I liked Stephanie and Aleksandr from the beginning of the story. Somewhere in the middle of the book however the story started to go off for me. Then it picked up, but then started to slow down again. Then there was a really good ending. So yes, I really enjoyed reading this book. The plot was interesting. Two broken souls that when together are whole. The chemistry between Stephanie and Aleksandr was real and intense. The pacing of the story was like a long distance marathon where the story seemed to be moving at a steady pace and then stray off to catch its breath, look around, back track, then start running again. I did however, absolutely love the ending. As far as the character development, there was much needed growth in both characters. I do recommend this book, especially if you are a subscriber of Kindle Unlimited.

Romance, Hot Alpha, Unexpected Twists

This was a great Hockey romance read. Aleksandr and Stephanie had a scorching HOT connection. You feel all the ups and downs right along with them.

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying good-bye so hard.”

I was captured right away and couldn’t put it down. I loved both of these characters, they were well developed Both Alex and Stephanie had things in their pasts that they never knew how to deal with. I am emotionally exhausted, ugly cry guaranteed. The sex scenes were also very HOT. I am excited to see where Jennifer Loring takes this series. Thank you for the great read.

When I was contacted by the author to review the second book in this series that came out Tuesday 7/26, What's Left of Me, once I read the blurb I knew I had to read the first book. So I did and I'm glad I did. Firebird is a wonderful love story. It is definitely not all hearts, flowers and romance. Ms. Loring keeps it real. Very real. And that's what I love. Both Aleksandr and Stephanie are flawed in their own ways and they have to deal with their stuff before they can work things out.

Firebird is the first book in a trilogy built around Aleksandr and Stephanie (at least I know the first two books are, so I assume the third is). And they are also centered around hockey. I am a sucker for a sports romance, even a sport I have little-to-no-interest in. I'm from the south, most of us don't have much interest in hockey. I'm a football girl. But I'll read and enjoy a hockey romance in a heartbeat and it wasn't any different for Firebird. Knowledge of the sport was not needed to enjoy the book. The sport is important to the book but the book does not get technical about the sport. But I loved the little bits I learned about hockey from the sport.

The characters are great. It is mainly centered around Aleksandr and Stephanie but the few side characters that stood out were great as well. I like that there weren't a lot of characters for me to remember. I like that I really felt like I was able to get to know what made both Aleksandr and Stephanie tick. And I liked that I was able to get glimpses into their past to see who they were before together. I think Ms. Loring does an excellent job letting the reader get to know the characters, the good and the bad and letting the reader really connect to the characters. I was cheering for Aleksandr and Stephanie through the whole book. At times, yes I wanted to smack them upside the head but I understood the hows and whys of what was going on and knew they had to grow. It really worked and Ms. Loring does an excellent job with this.

The plot was well done as well. The character-driven romance was great and then the rest of the plot driven by the surprises that Ms. Loring throws in from time-to-time was amazing. She always had me on my toes, crossing my fingers that things would work out. The book reads quickly and even though I was on vacation and wanted to do other things I found it was extremely hard to put this book down. And when I did put it down, I could not wait to pick it back up.

If you like your romance mixed with some angst. If you like your romance books keeping it real. If you like your romance books hot (just like this summer). If you like characters you feel like you get to know and you can cheer for. If you enjoy romance books that you don't want to put down then this book is for you. Firebird is amazing. I loved the characters, enjoyed the plot and didn't want to put it down. And as soon as I finished, I started the second book because I could not get enough of Stephanie and Aleksandr. Try it, I bet you won't get enough of the either.

it's been years since they've seen each other, but that doesn't mean the feelings have vanished. Stephanie remembers him, all of him, his heart, his body, his voice, HIM. And Sasha remembers Stephanie who loved him once, but then dropped him like a bad habit. He never forgot her or got over her. Now they are together again, but can Sasha cut Stephanie a break and help her out? Why should he? She ignored him for years. They are both hurting, both reeling from the past. But is the spark still there? Is it enough to make it work or will the bridge collapse and burn all over again?

Stephanie needs Sasha for the interview to seal her job/career as a sports commentator. She isn't sure what she'll find when they come face to face. And after she tells him her secret. He might just run off. She needs this.

Sasha wants Stephanie, he will do anything for her. No, for himself. Like seduce her back into his bed and home. When he finds out she is engaged, he is livid - can't blame him. That's not enough to push him away, it makes him work harder for her. He is determined to have her as his own. They are meant to be.

Fate steps in and Sasha breaks down. In his anger and hurt, he pushes Stephanie to the breaking point, where she bends and retreats from him again. This time can he be truthful with her and not have her run away? Is the love that they both share stronger than the shame that plagues them for different reasons?

I love a good hockey book. Love a good hockey player and Alex is a GREAT man. Bruised around the edges, but he loves Stephanie and is willing to go without her if he can't have her. He leaves it up to her. He doesn't pressure, he just loves! OMG!! I so want a hockey player!!

Stephanie had a troubled past and is easy to like and care about. She loves her brother, hockey, Sasha and her career. Can she chance breaking her heart again for the love of Sasha?

This is a great read that was hard to put down, it took me 2 days to read, because I was engrossed in everything. Their backgrounds, their future, their lives together and apart. Sasha's down fall had me ugly crying and fussing at Ms. Loring - how could you!? It tore me up! A book, tore me up. No cliff hanger ending. But I will be reading the rest of this series.

I've wanted to read this since I saw the cover revealed. This is probably one of my favourite covers of the year and the story sounded just as good. Therefore I couldn't resist signing up to the review tour.

Firebird is a mixed read for me and I'm not quite sure which side of the fence I fall on. There were parts I liked, and other parts that failed to hold my attention.

To start with the parts I liked: there was always something going on. Plenty happens in Firebird and I think it's all tied together well. Similarly, I believed in Alex's authenticity. I didn't always understand what he was saying but I think the author did a good job of making his Russian side believable without going over the top with stereotypes. I'm assuming she has some knowledge or researched Russian culture because it came across that way in the book.

Moreover I liked the hockey element. Whilst brief, who doesn't love the bad boy of his sport, right? I didn't always understand the terms used for plays and such, so I may have imagined sections differently to as described but I still enjoyed them.

As for the romance, it started off well. I really looked forward to where the author was going to take it. However, this is where the majority of my issues stemmed from. It just didn't hold my interest. I felt the spark and chemistry died early on between Alex and Stephanie. As the book progressed emotions and situations seemed repetitive and I didn't really understand why they did what they did. I don't know why, I just didn't connect with their relationship, there wasn't the intensity I like.

A part of it may have been down to the fact so much was crammed in. Firebird is on the longer side and I said it was a positive thing. However, it was also a negative in my eyes too. It meant certain things were pushed to one side in favour of a new issue and maybe underdeveloped slightly. There were also unnecessary details or filler information where the author described every action made by the characters which became monotonous.

Overall I still don't know where I stand with this book. It wasn't bad, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I just think I went in expecting too much. If you like hockey romances this may be for you.

This book had me on a roller coaster. There were times of frustration, happiness, sadness, anger, you name it I was feeling it at some point in this book. I wanted to throw my iPad at one point because I got frustrated at the character but inside I knew that the choices he made at the time were not made clearly. The characters in this book were two parts of a whole. Without one they aren't complete and not happy.

Stephanie didn't have the best childhood and it has shaped how she values herself and what she means to people. She has a hard time trusting people and when her boyfriend left in high school she figured all was lost. She tried to move on with life and even got engaged. One day the opportunity to interview one of the best NHL players arises and she knows she needs to move higher in her career. The problem... its her ex and the love of her life. She must suck it up and get the job done but he's not going to make it easy on her.

Aleksandr has not been happy since he lost his soul mate in high school. He has what he always wanted, a career with the NHL but he's lonely and always thought they'd share his success together. He lives the party life and the role of the womanizer. Aleksandr is not where he thought he'd be and is angry that the team he was captain on and helped them win the Stanley Cup has traded him and to a joke of a team at that. The future of the Earthquakes is riding on his shoulders and everyone wants the story. Aleksandr does not do interviews for the press but upon hearing news that his ex wants an interview he agrees. He determined to get answers for their break up and he is not going to give up a story easy.

Will Aleksandr get the answers he seeks? Will he give her the story she needs? What happens when things go to far? What happens when one of them is about to lose the career they so desperately love? Will this event break them to much or will they be able to rise as a person and together?

This is a MUST read!!! I loved this book and highly recommend it. If you don't like cheating of any form you might have some issues. I for one hate it but it does provide some angst and it didn't change my thoughts on this book at all. i still loved it and think its worth your time.
