Want a deeper relationship with God? Wonder how to talk to Him when you’re hurt, confused, angry—or overwhelmed with gratitude? Our heavenly Father wants us to know Him intimately. He wants us so close we can share every detail of life with Him—the agonies and ecstasies.
Our Heart Psalms explores the emotional rollercoaster of Scripture’s psalm writers, then invites you to use their patterns to create your own psalms. This interactive journal encourages you to develop an honest relationship with your Creator—who knows everything about you anyway.
Joyce K. (Krohne) Ellis, popped onto this world's scene in St. Louis, Missouri, born into a family with a strong faith and--obviously--a great sense of humor. "I loved the laughter at home and at extended-family gatherings," she says, "where uncles tried to outdo each other with the funniest jokes and puns." So it's no wonder that faith and humor permeate much of what she has written in more than five decades of writing articles and books, including The 500 Hats of a Modern-Day Woman. And it's that quirky sense of humor that makes what she teaches in her writing classes and seminars stick with the attendees, they tell her. One conferee recently told Joyce, "Only you could write a grammar book that's a great 'beach read.'" This woman was referring to Joyce's book Write with Excellence 201: a lighthearted guide to the serious matter of writing well for Christian authors, editors, and students.
In 1968 Joyce's family moved to the "tundra of Minnesota," whereupon her St. Louis relatives quipped that "the only reason there are any people in Minnesota is that people move there, their brains freeze, and they don't have the sense to move back." She married Steve Ellis, a civil engineer ("at least most of the time he's civil," she says), in 1969. They have three grown children, seven extraordinary grandchildren, and one adorable great-grandson. Currently living in suburban Minneapolis, they love sitting by a lake, river, or ocean--reading.
Joyce K. Ellis has published hundreds of magazine articles and short stories and 18 books. Her writing has garnered numerous awards, including the ECPA Gold Medallion Award for The One-Minute Bible for Kids. And her picture book, The Fabulous World That God Made was chosen by Focus on the Family as one of their Top Ten Family-Friendly Picture Books. She loves travel, needlework, and making short-term mission trips whenever she has the opportunity.
I have been reading this book for the past two months and it has been so helpful for me. As my city of Minneapolis was going up in smoke and reeling from the horrific death of George Floyd, I opened this book and read the chapter on “Feeling Pain.” It talked about Lament Psalms. The chapter gives you ideas on how to express your feelings and cry out to God as you write out your own psalm.
As I’ve worked through the devotions and written out my heart’s cry, it’s helped me process what I believe as we go through this global pandemic. In a chapter on “Feeling Happy,” Ellis writes, “We can choose to be happy in God even when it would be unnatural to be happy about our situation…We can be sure that he filters everything we experience through his loving fingers…God’s love screens everything before it gets to us” (pages 42-43). I feel it has helped me grow in intimacy with the Lord and has helped me move through some of the harder emotions to a place of renewed trust.
Along with the devotions, Ellis includes samples and prompts to get you started. I’d highly recommend this book.
Our Hearts Psalms is a unique Bible Study. Joyce Ellis shows the reader how to write Psalms. And during a quarantine we all need to find creative ways to express ourselves to God. This book is full of personal stories and wonderful illustrations that inspire the reader to create their psalms. Thought-provoking questions with each chapter clarify personal needs for the reader which leads to a deeper experience writing your heart to God. A great way to expand personal worship and intimacy with God. I highly recommend this book.
