22 Pounds: Backpacking, Martyrdom, and the Weight of the Cross

Rate this book
In the arid plains of the Middle East, Jesus famously looked at his followers and said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."

In an old-growth forest of the Daniel Boone National Forest in Central Kentucky, I finally began to understand what Jesus' invitation was all about. Part memoir, part sermon, 22 Pounds invites the reader on the journey of discovery about the real weight of discipleship and the heart of what it truly means to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus.

A compelling story...

Why do we do the things we do? Kyle does a great job of laying bare some interesting and troublesome aspects of the human psyche without driving you away with preachy condescension. Divinely rooted wisdom dances with strikingly beautiful prose to draw you in to a story that is uncomfortably your own, and a hope that is unflinchingly available to whoever is willing.

Burkholder’s recounting of a personal story draws you in and makes you comfortable with the uncomfortable truth his driving home. You’ll be better for the reading, and better for the journey.
