Die Geschichte war sehr simple und vorhersehbar. Die Charaktereigenschaften von Mulan und der Großmutter wurden aber etwas schwach dargestellt. Es ist aber sehr schön zum abschalten. Für ein paar weitere Momente mit Mulan ist es perfekt. 💞

I just love Mulan so much!
This graphic novel as a sequel did not disappoint me.
I could relate with the characters, the illustration is just amazing and I do mean to say this - this js just the perfect read ✨
It's fun.
It's adventurous.
It's liberating to read something historical yet a woman breaking the stereotypes all over again.
Bonus points: the story explores the culture and tradition of China at parts wherever feasible.
I thought the attire was the same for everyone but oh I was so wrong!
*Do not expect too much from the sequel.
It's a bit slow and less adventurous than the classic story.
But yes, it's so heartwarming, uplifting and motivational as always!
I love the romance so much!!!!!😍

I do feel like an angry old man yelling at a cloud by rating this mostly inoffensive children's book less than 3 stars, but I'm doing it anyway.
Pros:
+More Mulan content! She's one of the characters in the Disney Princess lineup that doesn't seem to have nearly as much merch or stories as others, so I always love seeing more of her.
+We get to see Mulan in an unfamiliar situation, out of her depth. The themes sort of reminded me of that direct-to-video sequel (I know, I'm sorry for bringing up the Disney sequels).
+More Grandma! Grandma is a main character in the story, and she adds a lot of humor.
+There's a nice theme about not judging someone by your first impression of them.
+The art is PERFECT. The main style is very cute and expressive and matches the tone of this story perfectly. It's also paired with beautiful ink drawings in Mulan's journal entries.
Cons:
-Mulan doesn't really feel in character in here She's quite passive in this story. On the one hand, we're seeing her in a new situation so it makes sense. On the other hand, it's frustrating that she's not using her strengths really and at several points is actually hiding in the story.
-The premise of this is...fine, but again, it doesn't really allow Mulan to show off her strengths. She basically just lucks out near the end when she puts all the pieces together, rather than using her skills like she does in her movie.
-I'm unsure on the age range of this. On the one hand, the themes and dialogue are extremely simple and suited for a younger age, as is the idea of everything we see in the cartoon panels being repeated in the diary entries. But younger kids would struggle to read this because of how text-heavy it is. That uncertainty made me unsure how hard to be on it - I'm not going to come down on something intended for 4-6 year olds for not having the Mulan in character because it's trying to tell a more simple story, but if it's for older kids I think that's a valid criticism.
-We briefly see Mulan's friends from the movie at the beginning, but then they're gone just as quickly. I would've liked to see more of them! That could've been a fun setup to have them accompany her in the palace.

I really liked this comic, especially the beautiful art style and the frequent feminist points in the plot :D
+1 An all-female team of writer and artists!
+1 The graphic book alternates between comic-style and Mulan's thoughts and narration in diary form, often accompanied by lovely Chinese-style illustrations.
+1 Enjoyable, engaging plot where Mulan is summoned to the Imperial City in order to help unmask a cult member in the court plotting to assassinate the Emperor. As well as gifting us with 24/7 feminist commentary, Mulan has her badass active moments, from taking out a snake in the Emperor's chambers, to actively searching for the spy in the Palace, fighting her way out of a cult meeting, and avoiding the Emperor's assassination with the help of Grandma Fa and Shang (more details on the plot, with spoilers, on my Blogger blog here). Another woman in the plot also shows fighting training, which was a nice touch.
+1 Female bonding/Bechdel and secondary female characters: Badass Grandma Fa, who thinks it's high time she travelled and had an exciting time xD, joins Mulan in her trip to the Imperial Palace, and ends up having an important role in the plot in order to prevent the Emperor's assassination - and also chats with the Emperor about her passion for herbs and medicine xD I would have liked to see a bit more interaction between Grandma Fa and Mulan, but what we got was lovely nonetheless. Mulan also bonds with other women in the palace, such as with her handmaiden Yu, and with the Emperor's Cousin, Li Mei.
+-1 I'm not the biggest fan of monarchy and the class system, but it is nice to see that the Emperor is trying to prevent further wars, and the final antagonist, , is criticized for her motivations based on vengeance and the desire for war. I also liked the grey-morality and female bonding from Mulan's part when it comes to judging the motivations and mindset of the antagonist, as she disagrees with her mindset, but at the same time can also understand her motivations and sympathizes with her situation.
+-1 We see no women at court in positions of power and only see them as courtiers, noblewomen who have to gain power and influence by scheming behind everyone's backs, and handmaidens. But in spite of this clearly male-dominated court and society, the men in this story (the Emperor, Shang) generally appreciate and respect the abilities of women like Mulan and Grandma Fa, who at some point are offered the positions of the Emperor's Chief Counsellor and the Chief Medical Officer, respectively. Also, Counsellor Chi Fu finally catches up and gains respect and appreciation for the warrior training and intelligence of Mulan, and both of them become friends. Mulan is also honoured as a heroine and warrior in the Imperial City, as she finds out when she arrives :D
+1 The feminist points shown throughout the story is top-notch. Mulan offers a continuous critique of gender roles, compulsory femininity (especially regarding encumbering traditionally female clothing), and the isolation of women.
-In spite of having been able to gain fame as a warrior and a heroine, Mulan is still very much constrained by the traditional gender roles of the patriarchal society she's in, her validity still limited to her appearance in many ways, and expected to conform to traditional femininity every time there's a formal event or a party - Even when her mission in the Imperial Palace is one of a trained warrior seeking to unmask an assassin, she's repeatedly asked to wear encumbering formal-wear and follow strict etiquette she cannot get accustomed to.
Like Merida, Mulan is not especially fond of what she sees as uncomfortable clothing (which happens to coincide with traditionally female clothing, as it usually does :S), and would much rather wear her comfy pant outfits. I love how this story repeatedly offers a critique of how female wear is so often uncomfortable, as well as particularly limiting when paired with traditional gender roles. There's nothing wrong with loving a dress and that can be paired with glorious feminism as well (Elsa is proof of that), but it's also very important to offer a social critique of this because uncomfortable female wear is still compulsory and strictly socialized in more than one job and context today.
And she may be a woman on a mission, but my girl Mulan be questioning societal rules and expectations every ten seconds in this story, dropping feminist critique like this every time she can, including but no limited to complaining about uncomfortable shoes before the Emperor after fighting off several cult members on her own and jumping off a roof xD
-Mulan also tackles gendered socialization and the isolation of women, commenting on how she and other women feel stifled and caged (in her home, in the Palace, etc), as women are traditionally more confined, limited and isolated in a society with traditional gender roles. Mulan starts the story saying that, while she's glad to be home with her family in the events after the war against the Huns, she can't help to feel more stifled and dissatisfied with her current lifestyle, back to basically following traditional gender roles, in spite of having gained fame and recognition in the Imperial City. She misses how subverting those roles meant a more active life for her, more 'full of purpose', which suits her personality more. Also, while she appreciates the luxuries of the Imperial Palace, Mulan also sees the place as a gilded cage. While bonding with Li Mei, she notices how the noblewoman seems to lead a pretty isolated life, with not many people to talk to, and worries about her being too lonely leading a boring life inside the Palace.
+-1 Relationship with Shang: I personally hate how they portrayed the dynamic between Shang and Mulan in Mulan 2 (which doesn't really exist for me, I'm sorry, nope). I don't like everything about Shang in Mulan 1, but in the sequel I remember him being incredibly entitled, seist, insufferable and controlling. Fortunately, i can get behind the dynamic they're having in this comic more easily. They communicate way more, Shang seems to appreciate Mulan's badassery without feeling threatened, and Mulan doesn't stop doing stuff just because she also likes him and is getting into a relationship with him (not like in Mulan 2 ahem).
Of course, regarding the last point, the dynamic would probably change at least a bit because of how the marriage system and mindset usually works legally, societally and mentally in a patriarchal society (aka Mulan 2 :S), unless the bloke in question were a pretty deconstructed ally by then.
The part that I liked the least about the dynamic in the story was the fact that Shang used the entitled 'I need to protect the woman' patriarchal chivalry card for a while by masquerading as a stable boy in order to 'protect' Mulan from the assassination plot (without knowing she was very much aware and actually in charge of the operation to unmask the cult member lol xD). The dynamic was back to being reasonably good once they met and communicated, working together to prevent the assassination while also keeping Mulan in the spotlight. But it was still a bit grating to see the unnecessary deceit, as he might have ignored the role of Mulan in all this, but he could also have actually told her she was potentially in danger in the first place if he was worried about her safety, instead of 'looking out for her' in a pretty patronizing and stalker-ish way without telling her anything :S.

A fun little romp. It could be trite and dropped Mulan's IQ by several points, but why on earth couldn't this story have been the direct-to-video sequel.

like ok i get maybe she's better at stab than espionage but
literally hid in the stables because she was told to instead of fighting the bad guys? what?
the villain was super obvious i'm surprised it took her that long to figure it out
honestly i think the emperor would've been better off just hiring her as a bodyguard this mulan clearly does not know what she is doing and literally told you so

I really like this series. Each book in the series takes place after the classic Disney movie and follows a particular princess on an adventure. The princess write a journal while they are on the adventure so some of the pages are excerpts from the journal. This is my least favorite of the current ones in the series we have. I think they tried to shove to many people from the movies into the story. I think it would have been better if the story focused on Mulan, Grandma, the emperor and the assassination plot and the new characters that come with that. I don't think anything else was needed.

I was very excited to discover this Mulan graphic novel, as she's one of my favorite Disney characters, however, this unfortunately does not live up to the character. This book is full of gorgeous artwork, but the story is very basic and shallow. I just felt like there should've been more. I would still be open to reading more Mulan graphic novels though!

This was such a fun adventure with Mulan, and it really captured the strength and determination that make her such a beloved character. Instead of another battlefield story, this one focuses on a different kind of challenge—life inside the palace. Mulan has already proven herself in war, but now she has to navigate strict court rules, expectations, and politics… which honestly might be even harder.
I really liked seeing Mulan struggle with feeling out of place in the palace. She’s brave and capable, but she’s also someone who prefers action over fancy etiquette, so watching her try to fit into that world felt very relatable. Even when she doubts herself, her loyalty and courage never fade.
The mystery surrounding the threat to the Emperor kept the story moving, and it was fun watching Mulan use both her instincts and her intelligence to uncover what was really going on. It reminded me that being a hero isn’t just about fighting—it’s also about perseverance, quick thinking, and staying true to who you are.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable read that shows a different side of Mulan while still honoring everything that makes her special. If you love stories about courage, loyalty, and characters who refuse to give up on doing the right thing, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Wunderschön
Ich bin echt begeitert von diesem super süßen Comic. Das war das erste Mal, dass ich überkaupt von dieser Disney Comicreihe gehört hatte und ich war sofort hin und weg.
Der Zeichenstil ist so wunderschön und passt perfekt zum Disneyfilm. Noch dazu sind alle Seiten farbig.
Die Geschichte ist sehr schön aufgebaut und glieder sich schön in das Mulan Universum ein. Die Figuren sind sehr authentisch und wirken wie in den Filmen.
Ich liebe es, wie die comicartige Geschichte immer wieder durch kleine Fließtexte, die sich wie Tagebucheinträge von Mulan lesen, unterbrochen wird. Dadurch fühlt man sich als Leser noch viel näher an seiner Heldin Mulan dran und kann richtig in ihre Gedanken und Gefühlswelt eintauchen. Die Story ist wirklich schön und spannend und hat eine gute Länge für ein schönes Leseerlebnis zwischendurch. Ich als großer Disney und besonders Mulan Fan habe diesen Comic sehr genossen und kann ihn nur weiterempfehlen. Die schönen detaillierten Zeichnungen und die leicht verständlichen Texte sind perfekt für Kinder im Leseeinstiegsalter geeignet. Aber auch für ältere Fans ist der Comic mit seinen unerwarteten Wendungen alles andere als langweilig.

Siempre he sido muy pero MUY fan de Disney y de la mayoría de las cosas que hacen. Así que cuando pude poner mis manos en un libro que implicara a una de las mejores princesas (aunque no es realmente princesa) de Disney, no lo pude evitar. Mulan es intrépida, valiente y uno de los mejores personajes que Disney tiene. No le importó tener que disfrazarse de hombre para poder ahorrarle a su padre tener que ir a pelear a una guerra de la que no regresaría. Luchó como toda una guerrera y es un muy buen ejemplo para tener en cuenta. Este libro nos la pone en una situación en la que no se encuentra en su elemento, de hecho se nota mucho en los distintos momentos que ocurren. Ella no quiere más atención por haber sido tan importante en la guerra y prefiere estar más sola que acompañada. Las cosas se le complican cuando el emperador necesita de su ayuda ya que no puede confiar en nadie más. La vemos viviendo en el palacio y lidiando con un ambiente que no es su fuerte. Me encanta que Disney haya sacado un cómic sobre este personaje, ya que de hecho no es tan explotado como se podría. Me gustó mucho el formato y la historia que se cuenta. Es súper rápido de leer y bastante atrapante, sin importar la edad que se tenga. Es una historia entretenida que nos deja ver a Mulan en esa situación extraña y obligandola a desenvolverse para resolver un misterio que pone en peligro la vida del emperador

Da Mulan einer meiner Lieblings-Disneyfilme ist bzw. sie immer meine große Heldin war, war ich sehr gespannt auf diesen Comic und er hat mich nicht enttäuscht. Der Zeichenstil des Comics ist wunderschön und es gibt immer wieder Zwischenseiten mit Tagebucheinträgen mit wahnsinnig schönen Aquarellzeichnungen im asiatischen Stil.
Es handelt sich hier um eine Geschichte in der Reihe der Disney Adventure Journals.
Hier startet für Mulan ein neues Abenteuer, als der Kaiser angegriffen wird und sie herausfinden soll, wer dahinter steckt. Sie begibt sich gemeinsam mit ihrer Großmutter in die Kaiserstadt und versucht, diesen Fall zu lösen. Ich will hier nicht zu viel über den Inhalt verraten, aber man trifft auch ihre Gefährten aus dem Film wieder, was mich sehr gefreut hat.

Cover: Das Cover finde ich sehr schön gestaltet und es hat mich gleich neugierig gemacht. Den asiatischen Zeichenstill finde cool und vor allem finde Mushu toll und ins Szene gesetzt.
Inhalt: Ein neues Abenteuer für Mulan steht für Mulan an, den eine Organisation, die aus Adligen besteht bedroht das Leben des Kaisers. Deswegen beauftragt auch Mulan in geheimen Mission in den Palast zu kommen, um die Feinde zu enttarnen und sie aufzuhalten. Doch sie fühlt mit
den strengen Regen und Sitten am Hoff nicht wohl und Mulan weiß nicht, wem sie vertrauen kann und wem nicht.
Meinung: Die Zeichnung haben mehr gut gefallen. Ich fand toll Mulans Geschichte weiter verfolgen zu können. Die Handlung war interessant und es war toll zu sehen, wie Mulan sich am Hoff bewehrt. Mulans Großmutter war sehr lustig nur ich fand es schade, dass man fast nichts von Mushu gesehen hat.

Tolles Buch mit wunderschönen Zeichnungen
Die Charaktere aus dem Disney Zeichentrickfilm "Mulan" finden in diesem Comicbuch ein zweites Leben.
Die Geschichte wird durch eine Mischung von Comics und eine Art Tagebuch erzählt. Der Zeichenstil des Comics ist klar und farbenfroh, während das Tagebuch durch Tuschemalerei-ähnliche Bilder ergänzt ist. Die Zeichnungen sind sehr schön und werden denen mit Interesse an der chinesischen Kultur sicher gefallen. Ich mag leider nicht so gern, wie die Menschen gezeichnet wurden; sie wirken zu stereotypisch.
Ich finde auch, dass die Schrift in den Sprechblasen nicht zu den Zeichnungen passt. Es gibt halt zu viel Text (oder der Text ist zu klein) für die Größe der Blasen und die gewählte Schrift wirkt zu "digital" im Vergleich zu den Bildern, was einen komischen Kontrast erzeugt.

Im Palast des Kaisers haben sich Anhänger des "Goldenen Tigers" untergeschmuggelt, die den Kaiser nach dem Leben trachten. Mulan reist nun in die Verbotene Stadt, um den Kaiser zu beschützen und die Gruppe ausfindig zu machen. Wird sie es schaffen, den Kaiser zu retten?
Die Handlung ist richtig spannend und gut beschrieben und ist mit 96 Seiten auch nicht zu lang gezogen. Auch die Illustrationen haben mich sofort überzeugt, da sie sehr viele einzelne Details besitzen.
Besonders gut haben mir die einzelnen Beschreibungen am Ende zu den Bräuchen und Sitten gefallen, mit den die Kinder auch etwas über die chinesische Kultur lernen.

This was okay at best. The biggest positive is the art style as the captures that Mulan feeling and traditional Chinese brush art. The characters are written as they are in the first film, so no one is acting out of character (I'm talking about you Shang from Mulan 2). However, the story is really lacking anything of interest. There is no character growth in any one, and the premise that the emperor's life is in danger and "the twist" is not refreshing after you've watched many Asian historical dramas. Overall, awesome art, boring story.

El arte está muy bien, pero pone a Mulán como un personaje inseguro y relativamente dependiente del resto, cuando en la película se da a entender que al final de la misma es una persona mucho más valiente y decidida.
También creo que si hubiese hecho primera y segunda parte de esta obra, habría dado mucho más tiempo para desarrollar la historia, de esta manera es muy previsible.
Por otro lado, está muy chulo ver como el consejero del emperador se hace más afable con Mulán, es un buen tipo pese a todo jajaja.

These are the other two continuation stories to classic Disney movies that I checked out. I enjoyed both of these which manage to believably tell an after the end credits story. I also have to give props to the artist for the Ariel story because they managed to make Eric look incredibly attractive. Moving forward, however, I will not pick up any more of these books.

This was so good!!! To begin with Mulan is one of my favourite Disney Characters and the fact that this is based in between the movies is fabulous!! I love the writing concept of this and how colours and drawing pull from the traditional Chinese heritage ! I actually hope there is more stories like this, it is a fabulous way to keep telling such a wonderful story that is Mulan!!

It took the rerelease of these for me to find out there's a Mulan one in the series but better late than never! So cool to read her thoughts directly through the journal pages in between the story as she helps save the kingdom and the emperor, learns princess-y things and deals with some imposter syndrome.

I always suspected Lian Mei. She’s one of the few new characters in the comic where there is a new villain.
I am surprised the comic ends on a happy note when not all the traitors have been apprehended.

Why wasn't this Mulan 2? This was an amazing story. This is what we needed in animation. I was completely surprised at how good this story is. It was a little predictable, but it was perfect for the age group.

This was a cute graphic novel, and I hope Disney puts out more adventure journals like this one in the future. The artwork was lovely, and it was nice to read a new Mulan story.
