Cat Writer Mollie Hunt is the award-winning author of two cozy series: the Crazy Cat Lady Mysteries featuring a sixty-something cat shelter volunteer who finds more trouble than a cat in catnip, and the Tenth Life Paranormal Mysteries involving a ghost cat. Her Cat Seasons Sci-Fantasy Tetralogy presents extraordinary cats saving the world. She recently released a COVID memoir which she calls, "a tale of a plague and politics, of depression and inspiration, and an ode to the very real and healing presence of cats." In her spare time, she pens a bit of cat poetry.

Her cat writing has earned various honors, including CWA Muse Medallions and World’s Best Litter-ary Awards. She is the recipient of the prestigious Michael Brim Distinguished Service Award (CWA) and the Catalyst Council Connect to Care Award, celebrating a true story of the profound connection between a shelter cat and its adoptive pet parent. Her book, Cat’s Paw, was a CIBA Mystery & Mayhem Semi-finalist.

Mollie is a member of Sisters in Crime and Willamette Writers, as well as being on the board of the Oregon Writers Colony and Northwest Independent Writers Association (NIWA). She is also the librarian for the Cat Writers’ Association. Mollie lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and a varying number of cats. Like her cat lady character, she is a grateful shelter volunteer.

Since I’ve been called a crazy cat lady myself, how could I not love a cozy mystery series called the “Crazy Cat Lady Mysteries”? The sixth book in this series takes place at a Comic-con where Captain Cat is murdered.

Lynley Cannon is a volunteer at a cat shelter and has eight of her own kitties. She attends the Comic-con to assist a colleague, but when Captain Cat is killed, her colleague is arrested for the crime. Lynley is sure of her innocence and vows to find the real killer. It’s not long before she realizes she could be in danger herself.

I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, but I will say this story moves along at a steady pace with a wide variety of unique characters throughout the story. Not to mention that we even get some kitties with their own personalities mixed in.

I love how the cats are part of the story. They don’t have any mystical powers and don’t talk, but they add so much to this story. Lynley’s love for cats is very clear and realistic. I can totally identify with her need to help every cat she runs across.

The story itself is well-written and I was surprised at the ending. There were so many possible culprits, but I was totally off base on figuring it all out. The author did a good job at surprising me. I haven’t read all of the Crazy Cat Lady Mysteries (I found them late in the series), but I intend to catch up. I didn’t feel lost at all as the mystery is contained in this book.

I think if you are a cat lover, you will enjoy this. Even if you aren’t, it’s a good mystery that keeps your attention until the end.

Her protagonist has apparently never watched Murder, She Wrote or read an Agatha Raisin novel, or she would realize that one murder just leads to another, thankfully for us. This adventure also trades on the authors love of trekkie-style conventions.

Another thrilling wild ride with the "Jessica Fletcher of Portland." Yes, "crazy cat lady" Lynley Cannon has become involved with yet another murder--and not only one, but three! Her intrepid curiosity and desire to help others leads her into trouble, sometimes within inches of her life. The stage is set at the Bridgetown Comic-con, where she joins costumed role players in their annual festival. She meets a group called the Planet Defenders who have the vendor booth next to that of Lynley's friend and fellow cat person Esmae. To start the action, Captain Cat of the PD is murdered and Esmae is arrested. Lynley then infiltrates the group in order to prove Esmae's innocence. But it's not easy!

Lynley, being basically an introvert but a curious one, always seeks solace back home in her Laurelhurst mansion with her clowder of eight cats. And as with all of Lynley's adventures to date (this is the sixth in the series), she manages to pick up a few strays to foster. The relative normalcy of Lynley's home life with her cats, friends, relatives, neighbors, and volunteer work at a cat shelter, provide breathing spaces between unexpected turns of events as the mystery progresses.

The reader should not expect normalcy for long before the story takes an unexpected twist and provides another challenging hurdle for Lynley. The plot is filled with these surprising events. But as the plot thread becomes more complex, there is a price to pay: the author needs to tie up the ends into believable knots without too many coincidences. Mollie Hunt meets this challenge very well, while nearly, but not quite, overstepping the line of credibility.

The author is a natural at creating believable episodes in a strange mystery. Characters of people and cats ring true, as does the dialog between characters and Lynley's narration. The world outside comes to life, as the author sets the story in a beautiful Portland autumn and into the first snowstorm of the season. I love the scene where Lynley, in a hurry to share an important clue with Esmae's attorney, becomes stuck on a Portland bridge in a snowstorm. It's gridlock, so Lynley decides to walk to a bus stop. Her hands nearly freeze as she clutches a bridge railing for balance. And yes, she is saved from freezing to death by someone possibly nefarious.

Lynley conducts many of her "investigations" in costume at parties with the Planet Defenders or in their activities to right society's wrongs. The author puts her imagination and knowledge of fantasy and comic characters to work creating vivid descriptions of the various costumed avengers. Bugman is my favorite costumed character. The book is a fun and exciting read.

Full disclosure here. First up, I have to reiterate I love cats, and Cosy Mysteries that have cats, no matter the author. Secondly, my cat does have a small role in this book. Thirdly, and most importantly for a reviewer, I love a good read that moves me through its story and world and makes me shout or comment when the characters do something, be it stupid, funny or just outrageous. Involvement and escapism is key to a good and satisfying read.
This is the best in the series to date, and was a pleasure to take to have on the bedside table.
How Mollie and her chief character Lynley find these situations, and how she will better them for the next book I do not know, but I shall look forward to finding out.
As you will have noticed, I have not given anything away here as to plot. I think that will spoil it for the reader. Rest assured the book is true to Mollie and Lynley, and shows a continuing character and writer development, with new situations and crimes. For me, I think this book is a bit darker than the others, but not in a bad way, and is a worthy companion in the field of similar books, but stands apart through its perspective, and underlying caring message.
As ever Mollie gives some really interesting insights, facts or even recipes on the chapter headings. I tend to save these till last, and have a leaf through at my leisure.
All in all a winner for me.
