[review initially written for the french website Manga Sanctuary]

In « Fanaticism », Shiokonbu deals with a well-known phantasm : maids. And to make things properly, he makes it historical. In this anthology of three stories, the first two (including the long one giving its name to the whole book) are set in victorian era, while the last one takes place just after the first World War. It's more a context than anything, but it still makes this hentai standing out of the crowd.

For once, impossible to review the book as a whole, you'll soon understand why. So here we go for three short reviews instead.

Fanaticism, the main story of the anthology, is about Alissa, new maid in Earl Alford's manor. She fantazises a lot about her employer's son, what, luckily, one of her colleagues notices. And here goes Alissa enroled in the young man's sexual education. But what starts as an almost cute story soon turns nightmarish. Did you read the labels on the cover ? Then you know what to expect.
Like in « Metamorphosis » by Shindo-L, Fanaticism uses sex as symbol of a long road down to hell, keeping to drag its characters further and further in the dark. While Alissa endures the jealousy and revenge of her rival, going through so many horrors she ends dissociating with reality, the manor becomes place to orgies and ashamed depravity. The author himself admits his goal was to create an hardcore story. He did. At least Alissa is shown as the victim she is, while Colette totally consents (and even starts) extreme sex.
Fanaticism is a very dark story, openly pessimistic, where the most powerful and devious people win. It's creepy, gloomy, contextualized enough to not be unmotivated and create more uneasiness than erotism. Maybe the only acceptable way to present this kind of story.

Luckily, just after comes Lily ties, a much more softer story where a young noblewoman having to go in a marriage of convenience takes with her the maid she loves. And there are many cool things in there.
First of all, it's a lesbian romance. Alright this is an hentai so the girls are obviously sexualized, but the storytelling really focuses on their mutual feelings and it's an HAPPY lesbian couple, raising together one of them's children. Behind the grim of Fanaticism, it feels like the first sunrays after a depressing winter.
There's also an heterosexual sex scene in this short story and once again, it surprises in a good way. Keaton asks several times to his partner if she feels well, tells her what he plans to do... That's not commun at all in hentais. (Add the fact he's an older yet attractive man, unusual as well. And he has long hair so it's a total win.)
So Lily ties really is a nice story, with some bitterness due to the fact Nora didn't ask to be there but balanced by her husband's gentleness and her powerful love with Cathy.

In mitigation, once again, bittersweet atmosphere. Sweet by the incredible tenderness between Cessy and Will ; bitter by the themes in there. An erotic story starting with war and addiction to meth is not exactly the happiest thing. And yet. Will doesn't lets his lover behind, but supports her as time passes. Sex is used as a catalyst, but it really is a vanilla story, with a loving couple and an epilogue that gives a big smile. Hard to believe this was written by the same author than Fanaticism !

Obviously, with three stories that different from each other, sexe scenes are too. There's a whole world between Fanaticism not-always-consented-violence and the softness of the two other stories. Something for everyone's taste and without the least redundancy. Visually, it's dynamic and detailed, with various views and expressive faces. The outfits are wonderful (when they exist) and the few backgrounds too.

As always with Niho Niba, the publishing work is great, with several color pages, artworks of the female characters at the end, no typos, perfect printing and binding.
