In this fourth book in the series, Detective Sophie Junot encounters how lies, jealousy and vengeance destroy several families, leading to murder. Beneath the façade of privilege and normalcy, ominous under currents rip people apart and destroy relationships. The provocative criminal cases that arise in Mansfield Falls push Junot to the limit of her investigative skills.
Poet, novelist, and travel writer William Graham holds a BA and MA in English and a MS in Communication from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He lives in Stowe, Vermont.
It’s hard to believe this is the 4th book in a series. The book desperately needs the ministrations of an editor and a rewrite or a rewrite and then an editor. Yikes! There are many grammatical errors, punctuation mistakes, wrong words, etc.
At times, the book feels like it wants to be an erudite collection of interwoven short stories but then the foul language blasts your senses into the gutter. From there, you realize the relationship between the four “stories” is tenuous at best.
Detective Sophie Junot is a caricature rather than a heroine; a tome. The mysteries are weak and unsatisfying. It appears the author did very little research, if any, to support this book; even the cover is unappealing. Hopefully, this will be the concluding volume📚
The wrong word added or the incorrect spelling can be frustrating. This book contains several shorter stories. The concepts are clear. Plotting is tight. Characterization of the major characters across the stories was pretty good, but those of each individual story are choppy, not giving readers much time to guess at the villain. I would have liked each separate story to be written at novel length. The plots are there.
Under Currents contains a series of short stories, each of which highlights a case undertaken by the titled Detective, Sophie Junot. While Detective Junot is a bit rough around the edges and a bit undisciplined, she manages to readily solve each case without significant difficulty. Simplicity is the essence of this book. 3 stars.
My thanks to goodreads and the book's giveaway sponsors for the opportunity to obtain and read a copy of this book.
