DNF at chapter 341/1236, so that's about 25%? I'm so torn with this book. I really want to know what happens next, which keeps me reading, but the male lead is attractive but abusive, one of the second male leads is "nice" but coercive, and the real second male lead is actually nice but his relationship is pretty much doomed because he's not the actual male lead, and the seesawing is just going to hurt them both, so I wish they'd just cut it off cleanly as soon as possible, but considering she's his doctor that's unlikely. He finds her super charming, and she is, but it's doomed, doomed, you two! Don't hurt yourselves like this! Just thinking about how it'll go gives me indigestion.
On the other hand, the freaking male lead. He's hot but I have actually wanted to stab him with a knife? He dislocated the female lead's wrist! Plus a multitude of other things. Dude is a psychopath. I am ashamed to say that I keep reading, hoping he'll get better and be nicer. I'm sure this is a similar mindset to people in abusive relationships: they treat you badly but sometimes they're nice to you and you hold onto those moments and hope that things will change. Considering that this is one of those transmigration novels, where there's pretty much a 95% chance of a happy ending, at least the chances of good treatment are better, but I want to keep in mind that this is NOT OKAY in real life. Argh, so torn, so torn. Maybe I can skim? At this point I just want to give Xie Jing Xing (from The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage) a big hug, for being an actually hot and good male lead.
EDIT: I couldn't help myself and continued to read. Excitingly there was a moment of connection between the main leads! Very brief. And then of course, we go back to the 4-way tug of war. The second second male lead turns out to be a sleazeball. He makes my skin crawl. The sickly other second male lead is just sitting around being pitiful. Newsflash, my friend, just because she's the only who can cure you doesn't mean she's obligated to be with you. Meanwhile, the main leads still can't figure things out by chapter 422. I can see a very, very, VEEEERY gradual softening, but this feels less like a slowburn and more like eating a lot of rice with very little toppings; you get tired of the rice while trying to find the toppings.
The author also has the habit of spoiling things way in advance, something like, "Little did she know, one day she will make him cough up blood for 3 days and 3 nights, but this is later." This happens many, many times, so at this point, we know that at one point, male lead will be injured for 3 days, female lead will have some kind of special skills, blah blah blah. It's rather annoying. And looking at the 816 chapters left to go with the second male leads constantly sticking their nose into and interrupting the main couple's extremely volatile relationship, I feel very tired.
EDIT 2: I confess my sin of lying about quitting yet continuing to read but this time it's DNF for real, at chapter 660/1236. I made it to halfway! You'll find out that everyone becomes an a-hole and what I feared about the second male lead became true. Eff all of them. I actually can't say it was a waste of time because it's truly intriguing and I couldn't put it down although I gotta admit I skipped a bunch of stuff for fear of high blood pressure from anger (second second male lead idc whatever your intent is I want you to kick you in the crotch you gross man). The intrigue is finally running out for me in the face of all the unfairness of the characters, though, so I'll stop it here.
