Mark has always been the oddball. He openly read romance novels in high school, and somehow never got mocked for it. His parents once told him to go to more parties, because all that reading couldn't be healthy for his social life.
Well, they were right. But he still found his HEA with his husband and Old English Sheepdog. They like to go on long walks in the Connecticut countryside or just hang out by the pond with a glass of wine.
Now he has his dream job, and he couldn't be happier to bring all of you the strange fantasies floating in his head.
“... I'm not afraid if I should fall ...You lift me up, before I fall too far...help me see the stars. You pick me up when all my hope is gone...Been through the fire but we blocked off the pain and we kept reaching higher, you were with me all the way…” ~ Mikey Wax - You Lift Me Up Lyrics
Oren, of ‘Into the Azure Noon’ by Mark C. Wade, was on top of the world, ready to spread his wings and do something other than be stuck in the small town he grew up in, when a freak accident leaves him with one leg. With the path Oren was anticipating ending so abruptly, he is left with the day by day drudgery that has become his ‘new reality’ and he is sick of it, but sees no way out.
Steve is the manager at the grocery store where Oren works. He is a very nice man and good-natured boss. That’s the only way Oren ever thought about him until recently. Oren isn’t sure what changed, but he starts noticing things about Steve that he has not spotted before - like how he looks in his clothes and his dimple when he smiles. Still, Oren has trouble thinking of him in a sexual way. Steve is a widower so Oren figures that he is straight and doesn’t act on it.
Things change between them one day, when Oren decides to try to help an old lady with her groceries. He is so tired of having to depend on others to do what he isn’t able to do that he takes a chance and it ends in disaster. Oren falls and has to be taken to the hospital. Steve insists that he take him and will not leave his side. Oren doesn’t want to go home because he knows that his mother will go insane and smother him to death. Steve takes Owen home with him instead. From then on, their relationship grows. They learn to give each other sexual and emotional comfort, support, and the courage to follow their dreams.
This is an endearing story about two men who find the love and happiness they deserve. It is not complicated, but it is uplifting. It doesn’t always flow smoothly and certain elements aren’t blended in well, but even so, I liked the character and the whole concept of getting permission from beyond for their relationship, along with the second chances scenario and the hopefulness the story portrays. It’s a good tale for a rainy afternoon while sipping a cup of tea. Thanks, Mark, for giving Steve and Oren their happily ever after.
I really enjoyed the premise of the story with a disabled MC. After losing his leg, he'd lost his way and couldn't find the path again until his boss, Steve, seemed to actually see him.
Their friendship helped to unlock something deep inside of him and he was able to repair something broken in Steve as well.
It was well planned and engaging, but I found the writing style to be a bit stunted and choppy. Some of the prose was beautiful, but the dialog seemed lacking in feeling and parts of the story seemed thrown in haphazardly instead of woven into the story line.
Both MC's had interesting back stories and seemed interesting enough on their own, but I had a hard time seeing them together towards the end, even though it ended well.
All in all, it ended up being a fun, easy read.
