The Subway Girl

Rate this book
A hopeless romantic and cynical news producer set out to find a “missed connection” from a NY subway. Will finding the Subway Girl lead to love?

Graphic designer and cinnamon roll Ryan Carlson is just a regular guy—a good guy—looking to meet the right woman. A transplant to New York from small town Iowa, he’s a strong believer in fate and hoping to recreate the magic his parents found. When he spies a stranger on the New York subway, he feels an instant connection. Before he can muster the courage to talk to her, the beautiful woman exits the train. Intent on finding her, he creates a website with all the details he can remember in the hopes someone will recognize her.

Angie Prince is a cynical news producer for the TMZ-style website Celebrity Monger. Between her nonexistent father figure, cheating boyfriend, and the celebrity infidelity she covers on her job, the native New Yorker believes love and goodness is for suckers. Desperate to help her unscrupulous boss take the site to network television, Angie needs a big story to boost ratings and page views.

As Ryan’s love quest causes a social media frenzy and collides with Angie’s search for headlines, he can’t help see the gorgeous woman behind the newswoman’s tough exterior. And though Angie happily pimps Ryan’s story for ratings, the biggest news might be the growing feelings in her own heart.

Is the mismatched couple’s focus for affections totally off track, or is fate about to arrive on platform passion?

The Subway Girl combines witty humor, sizzling chemistry, likeable characters, funny banter, and heart swooning moments into a story of unexpected love and fate.

If you love opposites attract romances, small town heroes, sassy heroines and great banter, buy now or read for free with Kindle Unlimited or find it on audio.

Favorite Quotes:

“Three G-er?” asked Diego. “You know. Like Luke here,” Ryan said. “Get in. Get off. Get out.”

There’s the telephone. The telegraph. And the tell Edna.

I also cut the crotch out of his favorite Tom Ford suit. Figured since he couldn’t keep it in his pants, I would make sure he wouldn’t be able to keep it in his pants.

“Sometimes, I wonder just how well I really know you,” Ryan said. “I’m an enigma.” Luke shrugged. “That is true,” said Ryan. Diego quietly chuckled to himself. Luke scowled. “I said enigma, not enema.”

Okay, here’s the plan. We’re gonna spend five minutes sharing our feelings like a bunch of teenage girls, and then we’re gonna go do a bunch of manly shit like chop down a tree with a crosscut saw…

My parents have been married so long that Mom finishes most of Dad’s sentences. She also starts most of them and fills in the middle, too.

“If he ever hurts you,” she said, gesturing to her brother, “tell me, so I can kick him in the balls.” Ryan winced and shook his head. “No worry,” said Angie. Ryan sagged in relief. “I’ll cut them off well before you would ever get the chance.”

My Review:

This was smirk-worthy good fun with lots of clever humor, witty banter, amusing scenarios, vile villains, and a few side orders of sensual steam that had me breathing funny. The characters were endearing and likable although Angie’s professional choices weren’t admirable in the least. I vastly enjoyed the levity provided by banter and exchanges of Ryan, Luke, and Diego and look forward to more of their interactions in subsequent installments.

I received a copy of the book for free from author in exchange for an honest review.

Omg this was so damn cute! I loved it!

This was my second book by Lisa Becker and once again it was a hit. I love that her books are the perfect blend of sexy and sweet. It’s exactly what you want from a romance.

I loved the main characters. Ryan was so swoon worthy and precious. Angie really complemented him well. They were so good together and I loved the big city girl with small town boy dynamic.

description

I also loved the supporting characters, like Angie’s roommate, Josie. Ryan’s two best friends, Luke and Diego, were also standouts. I particularly loved the bromance between the three of them. I would love to see a spin-off featuring one of them.

Sprinkled throughout the book were comments from The Subway Girl web series and I thought they were a nice touch. They were really accurate and showcased the range of comments made on the internet.

Lastly, I loved the little Easter egg nod to her previous novel, Starfish, with the mention of Kings Quarters. Kings Quarters is the band featured in Starfish (I highly recommend that book too).

Overall, if you’re looking for a good romance to read, then pick this book up!

R A T I N G: 3.5 stars to The Subway Girl!

‘It was more than a heart swoon. Something . . . inexplicable was pulling him toward this endeavor.’

‘Ryan Carlson looked up after offering his seat to an elderly passenger and knew his life had changed forever.’

I always have time for a Lisa Becker novel! A dependable writer who pens reliable stories of love. This one rife with charm, drama and an affection for camaraderie; a homage to classic romance movies, fabulous friendships, forgiveness and a devotion to fate.

“But it was more than that. Even though we only made eye contact for a brief moment, it felt like she saw me. Really saw me. And despite being strangers, it felt like we’d shared a thousand memories.”

Ryan Carlson knows fate has intervened on the everyday subway commute in the form of a striking girl that he knows holds the answers in his quest for long-lasting love, invisible, all-pervasive threads forcing a hand that tells Ryan a force is stringently at work…but when he loses the mystery girl in a swift momentary span, the promise of fate flees right along with her propelling a decision for this very normal guy to plant himself on a very public platform, Celebrity Monger, a celebrity gossip channel that has the coverage to broadcast Ryan’s story with the endgame of finding his Subway Girl.

“With more attention comes the increased likelihood someone is going to solve this mystery.”

Matter-of-fact Angie Prince , vocal and outspoken employee of Celebrity Monger is working Ryan’s story. She’s a small package that packs a punch. Fat chance and unfortunate for this cynic, because love? It has no impressionable bearing on her. In a job that doesn’t even remotely line up with her journalistic values, her principles too concrete to ever survive in the business of gossip and fake news, Angie has one stimulus for working this inhospitable job. Riding through the motions just comes with the territory.

“You’re meant to find a great love. You just need to give in to fate.” He smiled at her because he really believed it.’

‘Fate? No such thing. True love? Not likely.’

Angie is seriously considering the look of her future. She doesn’t hold a single match to this far-fetched story of hopeful love, but it’s a guise kept secret as a lot is dependent on her artificial investment in this story, Ryan’s pursuit and her job at a fashionable gossip site that feeds the channel of celebrity culture and labrish scandal…the only source of ease comes in the form of sincere, warm-hearted Ryan because he’s more than just a pleasure to work with. How can someone be so genuine?

Looking for the pink beanie, huh?”
“Yup. Speaking of, what did the tie say to the hat?” Angie prepared herself for some awful joke. Her only response was a raised brow.
“You go on a-head and I’ll hang around.” Ryan placed his hands under his chin and gave her an “Aren’t I cute” look.
He is cute, she thought. Adorable.’

This is a story where every hungry scavenger wants a piece of the pie, Ryan perhaps the tastiest slice. His winning personality attracts all sorts of attention, the perfect product to sit and talk In front of million as his authentic, good-natured charm does the rest of the work. Oh, what a helpless romantic he is! He wants what most of us lady folk strive for: real love, real commitment, the comfort and stability of sharing a life with someone. This classic movie loving enthusiast and devotee of shabby puns charms the smiles of all in his path. And the best bit? He’s the real deal.

.Was it unexpected? Yes. Highly unusual for her? Indeed. Genuine and all real? Absolutely.’

Angie is is a woman pressured and with that comes the mistakes of the foolish, which is why, with The Subway Girl comes the hopeless, helpless, hapless but reinforcing romance that circles the mores of mistakes, misplaced choices and forgiveness. A plethora of people are living in the same orbit with an ambiguous, double-barrelled sense of fate playing a course in these bisecting lives waiting for our two main protagonists to play a game of catch up. Fake news, faux intentions, real feeling and consequential backlash blend and unify in a ploy of the messy manipulations of reality TV, prime time opportunities and out-of-sight intrigue told in a third person perspective that broadens this story of connective lives, almost like the narrator has a hand in fate...

‘Fate, after all, had brought them together, right?’

As always, a love story will reach its end, but the ways to get there are many in the making. Physical chemistry is attractive to read about, but those fundamental moments of emotional connection, the forging of friendship, the thoughtful play-out of a thoughtful romance? Those are what bind a reader to a great love story, even better that this story acknowledges a friendship between the two love interests foremost.

‘She’d dealt with a broken heart before, so it wasn’t an entirely foreign feeling. What was new was the feeling of hopefulness. He’d actually given her a gift—a restoration of faith in people and the belief that maybe, just maybe, she might find love one day.’

‘Being with Angie had felt both like the first time and like they had been there a thousand times before.’

Becker has given this story an immersive structure with a complimentary plot that presents its fair share of twists, tension and drama. I love the intermittent message board posts - it grounds the story in the public eye while juxtaposing the personal lives of our characters.
It’s interesting and authentic with well-considered characters, both main and supporting.

What I think Luke here is trying to say is that when you love, man, you love with your whole heart, and we aren’t getting the sense that she’s worth it.”
“That was beautiful, man.” Luke wiped an imaginary tear from his eye.
“Why, thank you,” Diego replied, holding his hand to his heart.
“Are you two done having a moment?” Ryan said with a laugh.
“Yeah, I just get a little choked up when we start talking about true love,” Diego joked, fanning himself with his hand.’

Stories should most always engage with the values of conflict and drama, it’s necessary for a story to thrive on; to know that a relationship will stand the test of time. I did have some bittersweet feelings churning in my tummy while reading this though, which I’ll elaborate a bit more on further down, but I didn’t completely take the romance in stride because there was more of a friendship build up than the former, with so much stonewalling Ryan and Angie's relationship

‘It was time to stop being fragile like a bomb and start being fragile like a flower.’

I’ll always love a story that can produce the best kind of humour; it somehow has a knack for bringing out the best a story can offer, and The Subway Girl is compounded with it from cheesy one liners to quirky wordplay and innuendo to give-and-take that’s just undeniably funny. Humour can do to a story what rain can do to the earth, uplift sustain and nourish!... and that it does.

Hey, slobs. Can you try and remember to date your food in the refrigerator?” Diego held out a takeout container with a stained bottom. He scrunched his nose and tossed it into the trash can.
“I tried dating my food in the fridge, but it only thinks of me as a friend.”

A fool’s chase or an optimist’s pursuit is what The Subway Girl asks and answers. A search for the dream girl manifests story of a needle in a haystack. Fame is not the mission, but a desire to seek out love is when the cursory memory of a subway girl drives Ryan to publicly expose his plight. Angie’s dreams are bigger than vending shallow, invasive tid-bits and tales. Serious journalism is the goal, not flimsy, pretentious stories hanging from threads of flawed fate but she’s bound by the job, dependent and in no position to put her principles first.

‘A big backbone only made for a louder snap.’

‘They say when a lie is out running around, the truth is still getting its boots.’

Conniving exes, opportunists, a cunning playmaker, ambitious schemers and fame seekers come together in the name of a romantic’s dream who readily puts himself in the line of fire in the name of love, with all eyes watching even with the prospect of mortification. What a brave man indeed! That age old notion of opposites attract, and that even older concoction of sardonic cynic meets hopeless fantasist assembles another flavour adventure by Lisa Becker.

“The student becomes the master. I like it.”
If only he liked me.’

“What can I say? You’ve inspired me.”
If only I could inspire her to take a chance on us.’

Becker gives authentic romance a good name. She writes grounded, down-to-earth but heady romances with telltale heat, spice, warmth, heart, a lot of jest and that untouchable, singular something that’s just Lisa Becker. You haven’t lived the best of romance if you haven’t sat down and submerged yourself in a Lisa Becker novel. Trust me, I shall never lead you astray! :D

Sure, she didn’t think love was possible for her, but at least she was now convinced it was possible for him.’

‘What would it take for her to prove to him she was worthy of his love? What would be her boom box moment?’

Wholesome, heated and heavy with heart and humour - qualities you’ll always unearth in a Becker novel. A romantic chronicle and a fateful endeavour of the heart, led by fate, fought by bad intentions and won by faith as we sit front and centre to witness the story of a man invested in fate.

"I’m just a guy who really believes in fate,”…

PS: Love the callback to the Kings Quarters and the few references to Starfish! It made me all broody for Brad and Marin. :D
PPS: I’ll have you Diego!

Trigger Warning: Two sex scenes and some cursing

A big thank you to Lisa Becker for sending a copy of The Subway Girl for review!

C O N C E R N S/ T H O U G H T S:
---------------------------------

1) Such a romantic at heart and of mind and for all the world to see is our Ryan. He’s an amazing guy, no doubt about it, but I did feel that he was too seduced by the idea of love that he knowingly looked past Angie when he knew he had feelings for her. The reason this frustrated me was because both Angie and Ryan ended up being passive enough that they let Ryan indulge in a whole other relationship. I completely understand that he needed to figure things out himself, that he had every right to try and find happiness after they both felt burned by the other (it was his goal to find love after all), but i felt that he let his obsession with love get in the way of him and Angie. This then threw a huge spanner in the works in their romantic relationship (which had barely developed as they had built more of a friendship). I didn’t really get to see them in a relationship setting as a couple until the very end. Perhaps they were both a bit too passive with their attraction?

2) Granted, Angie made some big mistakes, but I think Ryan was also very passive about their romance and should have taken some responsibility instead of pinning the brunt of the mess on her. I didn’t want him to fall into the whole ‘victim’ complex, which he did because he was unfairly manipulated, but I did strive for him to be a bit more perceptive instead of losing himself to his fundamental needs and getting swept away by misleading women. But as a romantic I suppose even the best of us will overlook flaws. Ryan once said that he’d forgive his ex for most anything because she was his first love. Now, I don’t completely understand why he didn’t give Angie the same consideration when she came to mean something to him. Perhaps because he believed in her and her faith so much that he consequently felt the pain of betrayal. Of course, betrayal will burn, but I wanted his unwavering faith to extend to Angie a bit more.

3) Truth be told it was very frustrating for me to watch the main female protagonist sit there on the sidelines and watch Ryan in the midst of another relationship. This bugged me the most and made for uncomfortable reading. It broke my heart and irritated me in equal measure. I’m a territorial reader so I didn’t like the integration of lip locking with other women who were not the main protagonist, especially when it’s their attraction, their romance, their love that we’re supposed to be watching develop. Although it didn’t count as cheating, the laws of a romance are a little different with literature because as we all hope for a HEA, we also strive for two main leads who are loyal and have eyes for each other, and I couldn’t help but feel that it was a bit of a betrayal on Ryan’s part.

When I read this book, I remember reading a section in craiglist.com titled Lost Connection. As a romantic at heart, I can not help wondering how many of those lost connection find their connection? Or even better soul mate?

The Subway Girl is about that lost connection. Miss Becker done a fantastic job bringing the story alive. With humor and fun banter. I feel the story telling is refreshing and not boring at all. I only wish the story can be longer a bit more.

Overall, a wonderful book.

The Subway Girl was a cute contemporary romance. I loved the premise of seeing someone on the subway and then trying to find and connect with them. The book looked at how social media, timing, fate, and maybe a little luck, can all combine to bring strangers together. One of my favorite parts of the book, were the male and female friendships and how supportive and loyal Ryan and Angie's friends were. Luke and Diego were absolutely hilarious and I loved the playful ribbing and teasing between them all. Josie was also so wonderful and I loved her confidence and ride or die attitude. I'm very intrigued by Luke and Josie's budding romance and also the best friend's little sister vibe I'm getting from Diego and Finlay. I also really liked how the story showed the positives and negatives of social media. What is presented to the world can so easily be distorted and in many ways, The Subway Girl was a cautionary tale about not jumping to conclusions and believing everything you see, hear, or read. As much as I liked the characters, I never truly fell in love with Ryan and Angie. Ryan almost seemed too good to be true and he came across as a little too naive. The sexy times were very hot though and I am always a fan of the dirty talking boy scout heroes. Overall, this was an entertaining read that romantics at heart will really enjoy!

This was such a fun story to read with just the right amount of romance thrown in. I completely devoured it!

Ryan sees the girl of his dreams getting off the subway. He loses sight of her but a web producer comes up with a plan to help him find her. He can't wait to meet the love of his life. But Angie doesn't believe in true love and is only interested in her show's ratings. So much is riding on the success of this show.

Well, let me tell you, the clashes and chemistry between these two make for a roller-coaster ride of emotions and drama. It was so entertaining to watch the romantic and the cynic battle it out. And oh my gosh, there were parts that had me laughing out loud. That Angie, she's a little spitfire!

I loved The Subway Girl! I've read all of Lisa's books and I'm always excited to read her latest one because I know it's going to be an amazing journey. This one did not disappoint. Check it out!

I’d actually like to give it 3.5 stars but since I can’t I’m gonna round down due to the cheesy factor in parts of it. A cute, easy read (actually only took a couple hours to read) it was a nice break from the thrillers that I tend to lean towards. The main character, Ryan, was a good guy but you knew from the get-go what was going to happen. I’m not a typical romance reader but it was worth the read :)

Have you ever taken the NYC subway before? ⁣

If you have, you know that every time you take the train, you leave with a story. A funny character with an eye catching outfit, a weird unexpected musical or dance performance, someone trying to wrestle a 10 foot ficus tree on board… there is always something going on down there!⁣

My favorite stories of the subway are those of missed connections. The ones about making eye contact, or a connection with an attractive stranger, but don’t have the nerve to say hi, and regret it days later. But how do you FIND that someone? ⁣

The Subway Girl is THAT story. A contemporary romance I FLEW through, eagerly anticipating love and a twist of fate for both of our main characters, in hopes in finding that girl from the subway, and a happy ever after ending for everyone involved (OK maybe not everyone... 😆)⁣

It’s part Serendipity meets Missed Connections, with the hustle and bustle of NYC and the warm fuzzies of a Hallmark Movie. I just adore everything Lisa Becker writes, and I hope you’ll check this one out!

How far would you go to find the person that captures your eye across a room or a crowded subway?  This book covers just that very thing but is it so Ryan can find this one woman or is it for ratings of an online magazine/celebrity gossip news source?

Ryan is a kind and endearing soul and it isn't hard to see why anyone would be attracted to him.  He comes across as that perfect guy, but no one is perfect and I think Ryan's downfall is he doesn't realize that he doesn't want this mystery woman when Angie has captured his interest and possibly his heart.

Angie was burned by a past relationship and when she agrees to help Ryan find this mystery woman, he is just another job.  That is until they spend hours scrolling through videos of those that have responded to his plea.  It doesn't take long before she realizes the person that Ryan is and falls in love but takes a back seat to this work project.

This is a story of the search for a perfect relationship and sometimes you don't know what you right under your nose until you lose it and then are miserable wanting it back.

I enjoyed the banter between Ryan and Angie and the addition of their friends/roommate/co-workers just rounded the story out.  Josie is a true friend and has her own ideas about men and relationships which is a boon to Angie when she has her rollercoaster moments.  Diego and Luke provide some great comic relief but are also Ryan's support system.  There is a side story with Luke and Josie that I think would make a great book, so maybe the author has that the works?  We can hope!  Ryan's younger sister is a hoot.  She knows her brother well and likes to poke fun at him when the situation arises.

But no story has all likable characters.  Barry is the sleazeball owner of Gossip Monger and is all about the dollar and using anyone and everyone to pull in higher ratings for his shows.  Frankie is Ryan's ex-girlfriend who wants to try and get back with Ryan for the publicity.  You could say she is Barry's dream come true!  Harlan is a character that is on the fence.  He could go either way - slimeball or friend.

I enjoyed the banter between the characters and watching Ryan and Angie's story develop.  It wasn't a smooth road but it all works out in the end.

Have you ever wondered just how far you might go to find a person you trust you had a connection with?

Well let me tell you Ryan is that guy. He's sweet and so full of hope that he's met the woman for him, all from a single glance on a Subway cart. However he can't find her and that's left his heart in knots.

Angie works at a web gossip business, it's kind of like your TMZ but a bit more with bad management. She needs the money and so with her only sole mission to get this series onto the TV for a better paycheck she's not afraid to cross the line and question her morals.

Angie and Ryan set on the search for The Subway Girl together. It starts a simple search for love but as you know nothing on TV can ever be so simple.

With a lot of twists and turns and altering third persons views with other characters, it is a story that keeps you on your toes!

One thing for sure with a read from Lisa Becker is that you'll never get bored.

There's romance, flames, questions, mystery, aggravation and a whole lot of enjoyment and escapism!

A must read I'd totally recommend of you want a story that is a little different from your typical romance stories!

Thank you for the ARC Lisa Becker in exchange for an honest review.

The Subway Girl was an entertaining, sweet, and beautifully written story. It was unique and I really enjoyed reading it.
I loved Ryan, so much. I wanted to hug him, protect him and hide him from other characters in his book. He was so precious, so adorable, sweet, and kind. Definitely my favorite character from this book.
I liked Angie, but even though I could understand some of her actions that doesn’t mean I always liked or agreed with them.
I liked Ryan’s and Angie’s friends, especially Ryan’s, but other characters were not really likable and mean, but they made this book more interesting.
I just wanted more of Angie and Ryan together. I loved their friendship but I wanted to see more of them in a relationship.

Damn, I loved this book!! The setting, the characters, and plot were well done and the ending was so satisfying I just want to go back and read it again.
Ryan is on the hunt for the girl he spotted on the subway. He cant stop thinking about her and if she might be his forever girl.
Enter cynical Angie. She works as a reporter for a scandalous news show till she can find a real job as a reporter once she pays off the debt she's in. To do that she decides to help Ryan find his Subway Girl. In the process she can boost her sites ratings and impress her slimy boss.
However, once Angie meets Ryan she's not entirely sure she wants to share him with anyone especially his Subway girl.
This is such a fun contemporary romance. Every time I read a book by Lisa Becker, I find myself falling more in love with her writing and characters with every new story she releases.

What a cute, entertaining, and uplifting romance! Based on a missed connection, 'The Subway Girl' explores modern celebrity culture and modern romance with the story of Ryan, a Iowa native who spots a beautiful woman on the New York City subway, and Angie, the producer of a reality TV show about love and relationships.

Ryan is the ultimate nice guy, who briefly spots a mysterious woman on the subway but loses her in the crowd. After lots of failed attempts to locate her, a reality television show produced by Angie might be his only hope.

Angie is very cynical when it comes to relationships and has been burned in the past. But it doesn't take her long to realize she is falling in love with Ryan, who is seemingly uninterested and only focused on finding the elusive Subway Girl.

I was pleasantly surprised by the heat level of this book and the witty banter between the characters! It all felt very fresh and modern. And I loved the New York City setting, the author seems so familiar with the local landmarks. The obsession with reality TV and celebrity culture is all very fascinating and makes for a fun, lively story.

I enjoyed this sweet, sexy and fast-paced romance. I felt a bit disconnected from our main characters but still think this is a perfectly fun and light summer read, sure to please all new adult romance lovers!

Okay, this was absolutely adorable! It really could have been a Hallmark movie. From the blurb, I thought the book was going to be a bunch of intersecting romances with all these different characters. But, this is centered around one guy, Ryan. He sees a woman he thinks could be his soul mate on the subway but loses her. He tries unsuccessfully to find her so when a TV network shows up wanting to help him find her, he agrees. As you can imagine, things get pretty dramatic with this now being reality TV. Angie is his producer on the show. Angie and Ryan become friends while trying to find his subway girl. There is no love triangle in here. Angie is a cynical New Yorker who doesn’t believe in romance. Ryan is the exact opposite. He is the definition of a nice guy. I loved these main characters. Their friends were also amazing. However, there are quite a few villains on here too but they brought a ton to the storyline. I thought the whole story was unique, adorable and I would recommend it.

When Ryan sees a beautiful woman on the subway, he is drawn to her in a way he has never felt before however she is gone before they can meet. This sends him on a mission to try and locate her but that is easier said than done until Angie and the tabloid where she works enter the picture.

Although this is not Angie’s dream job it pays the bills until she is able to become the reporter that she wants to be. She knows that the chances of locating the mystery woman are improbable, but she may be able to garner enough attention to propel her career to a new level.

This is a case of opposites attracting as he believes in love, fate and happy ever after while she doesn’t, and their backgrounds and lifestyles couldn’t be more different. Humor, heat and all the feels as it may be chance or it may be fate but now that Ryan and Angie have been brought together under the most unlikely of circumstances only they can decide if they are each other’s destiny.

Have you ever felt a connection with someone and then lost track of them? In The Subway Girl, Ryan is riding the subway in New York City when he looks up and sees the girl of his dreams. When the lights flash and the doors open, she's gone. He embarks on a crazy journey to find this mystery girl, launching a website dedicated to finding her and then even agreeing to put himself out there on a Celebrity Gossip website to see if he can somehow connect with her. In the process he crosses paths with multiple people and we get to know these characters through their role in helping to find Ryan's dream girl. ⁣⁣

I've read and loved four of Lisa Becker's books and I'm happy to add The Subway Girl to that list. I can always count on Lisa for a great, heartwarming contemporary romance. The Subway Girl was a unique reading experience because I wasn't sure who I was rooting for until a good ways into the story. Getting to know the characters and peeling back the layers of the story was a fun journey and I was definitely happy with the way everything wrapped up. I love the satisfaction of a book like that!⁣⁣

I was lucky enough to read a really early copy of The Subway Girl and I loved it SO MUCH! This story gave me such a book hangover. I read and loved Starfish from Lisa Becker and I went into this one with really high expectations and The Subway Girl exceeded all of them

Inspired by a real life missed connection story, The Subway Girl captured my attention from page one. I really didn't know where the story was going and I was so pleased with how the story progressed. There are so many quirky characters and at first I honestly didn't know who the love interest was going to be. Ryan was a great character and I so enjoyed his love story. Once it becomes clear who the heroine is, it's impossible NOT to root for them! I loved the chemistry and how their relationship progressed.

Even though I read the beta for this almost a year ago, I remember how much one scene gutted me. Lisa's has a way of writing love stories that pull me in and make me so happy, but also make me cry. Ugh I loved this one so much!

The Subway Girl was a five star read for me! You know it's worth reading when I read it months ago and I am still thinking about how good it was!

Highly highly recommend!

I can't seem to sleep nights anymore on weekends. I have become used to sleeping in the mornings since I started working again on a night shift. Yes, thankfully I have work again. My last project ended last April and fortunately, there was an opening on another team and my manager thought of me. I started working again about two weeks ago. It's a blessing in this very trying times.

The Subway Girl is set in New York. I remember riding the subway and seeing a very cute guy. We even stole a picture of him. That was about ten years ago. That was my first time in the US and my first time to experience The Big Apple. Finally get to be see the city up close and get personal with it. I remember it was early morning. It was our first time to ride the subway. We were on our way to The Museum of Natural History. We saw this very cute guy with curly hair sitting right across from us. We thought, what a great way to start our day. We got lucky.

A hopeless romantic.
A cynical web show producer.
An unscrupulous cameraman.
A sleazy businessman.
An aspiring actress.
A womanizing best friend.
A scheming ex-girlfriend.
A commitment-phobic roommate.
An unlucky-in-love buddy.

These lives intersect when an average guy is awed by a gorgeous mystery woman on a New York subway and vows to meet her.

This is how the blurb goes and it does aptly summarized the story. The title alone promises you a sort of adventure of hopefully finding love on the subway. Exciting, right? Yes, my thoughts exactly. You woke up that day clueless as to what the day would bring and ending up possibly meeting the woman of your dreams on your commute to work on the A train wearing a pink beanie. How romantic is that? I would say, anything can happen.

The possibility of meeting your future husband or wife on a train is not far off. Actually, when we were in New York, I think I had the same thoughts. What if I meet someone special here in New York - a city that never sleeps may actually be a city of endless possibilities? That was when I was a bit younger and still hopeful about love. Now, I have accepted the reality that I might actually grow old alone. I am okay with that as long as I still get to travel. These past few years, being back in Cebu after spending about 8 years in Manila, I think I love living alone. My sister even told me that I have been so used to living alone that's why I don't have enough patience to deal with my father. True. But I do admit, there are still times I daydream of meeting that person who can love me for all my amazing qualities and not run away when my hideous self shows its presence.

Right after reading the first chapter, I came up with this theory that I think this story won't end like a fairy tale - Ryan, the main character, will not live happily ever after with the pink-beanie subway girl. This story should be better than that. I just have a feeling. A very strong feeling that the pink-beanie girl will not be a good fit for Ryan. I just knew. It's probably because she was wearing that pink beanie. That gave it away. Hahahaha. I hate pink. But kidding aside, I just knew that for a good love story to work, it should come with obstacles. It can't just end up with Ryan getting the girl that easy. Well, it wasn't actually. He had to actually wear his heart on a sleeve for all the world to see.

I really liked that the story did turn out as I hope it would be - Ryan actually meeting pink beanie but realizing that she's not all that pretty. And that little did he know that love is just right there staring him in the face for months. Okay, I admit, his search for pink beanie paved the way for him to meet the woman he should be with. But again, thanks but no thanks. Fate does work in mysterious ways.

When Ryan meet Angie, the woman who's going to help him find the Subway Girl, I know something good is bound to happen. I'll leave it all at that. I don't want to spoil anything.

One of the things I really like about this story are the smart and funny references to books, movies and songs. I learned a new word from this story - Beetlejuice. I haven't seen the movie but I think it's very smart to say "I think we beetlejuiced her." I would love to use this sentence in my conversations with friends one of these days. Watch for it.

I give this book 4/5 cute Kewpie dolls. I did enjoy this story. Especially because it didn't turn out as what everyone would expect. I love you Lisa Becker for making this story as it is. I was rooting for Ryan to finally find the subway girl and also wake up to reality. It turned out, all the effort of finding the girl was not wasted because while he was trying to sort out through the hundreds or thousands of responses claiming they were the subway girl, in the process he found the girl he should be with. He got to be friends with her and relied on her. He got to be himself. He didn't have to try to impress her or try to win her because she already got to see Ryan in his best and worst days. No one could resist the natural and genuine charm that Ryan has. He's a gentleman, smart and what you see is what you get. What else could you ask for in a man? If it was me, I'd be set for life.

Here's one of the other things I like about the story. I totally agree with Angie on these. I don't know but I really hate having to join the bouquet toss when attending weddings. I always find an excuse to go to the bathroom when that part comes. I just don't like it. I am not exactly sure why but the idea just doesn't sit well with me. The only wedding I did that was my sister's wedding and only because I was obligated. So, maybe Angie summed it up correctly. I refused to be a part of such barbaric ritual. Marriage is not a requirement. I can be happy even if I am single. Happiness is a set of mind. It's an attitude. You don't need another person to be one. I guess, that's why some marriages don't work because they go into it thinking the other person can make their bitter lives sweet. But don't get me wrong, like I said, I do still wish to find someone I can spend the rest of my days with, grow old with, travel with and carry my groceries. But yes, I'm not totally a fan of flying flowers either.

I just think that bouquet toss tradition is barbaric. Herding all the single ladies onto the dance floor so everyone can mock their singleness.

Why does being the next to get married equate to good fortune?

...about not being fragile like a flower but being fragile like a bomb.

- Lisa Becker, The Subway Girl -

Thanks again, Lisa Becker for always thinking of me whenever you have a new book. I always enjoyed your stories. I am also happy that in a way we think alike - it's okay for Ryan not to get the subway girl. It's a really brilliant idea.

By the way, I don't have a copy of Links yet. I've read the blurb and would want to read and review the whole book. Would you please send me a copy? I am begging you, please.

A lot of romances stick to a pretty set series of formulas. And every romance reader has their favorites: firemen, enemies to lovers, small town, etc. The first noteworthy thing about THE SUBWAY GIRL is that it is totally fresh and new! You haven't read this story a bunch of times before. It's a breath of fresh air in a genre of well-worn (but also well-loved) tropes.

I loved this story and these characters. Angie is a driven, smart, and real female lead with complexity, but also charm. And Ryan is sugary sweet and utterly swoony!

And the HEAT between Ryan and Angie burned up the pages of this book. Their friendship and their hot romance struck the perfect balance for me.

This is a great read with complex and endearing characters and a unique story that results in a must-read for romance readers!

I was given an advance digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I have to say the first half had me feeling a bit underwhelmed; and my main thought was "alright no surprise ending coming here." (This is probably where I should put up the disclaimer that Lisa Becker is 1 of only 3 authors who can get me to eagerly read romances so my thoughts on a "predictable ending" shouldn't hold too much meaning.)

But then, as expected, I quickly fell for it and could not wait to see how it would all come out. Despite what my cranky nonromantic side might have felt when I started reading; it's a great story with just the right amount of trouble, conflict and everything else for the main characters to keep you wanting to read until they reach their happy ending.

It very well could have melted my cold little heart.

Missed connections. Love at first sight. Sometimes you just need to read a romance that sweeps you away and captures your imagination. Like a good romance flick, Subway Girl kept me guessing, tugged at my heartstrings, and played on that elusive magic you have to believe is possible for romantic serendipity. Congrats to Lisa on another swoony romance.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. The Subway Girl by Lisa Becker is another love story that turned out so much different than one would typically think.
Will Angie find Ryan's Subway Girl while still being true to herself?
Ryan Carlson
Ryan Carlson is the whole reason why this story exists. He saw a girl on the subway that he thought was beautiful and didn't get a chance to talk to her before she got off at her stop. After that, well, the whole thing got way too complicated once Celebrity Monger got wind. Let's just say that Ryan probably should have said no to doing this project. Ryan is a great guy from a small town in Iowa and is honestly just looking for a girl that wants to spend the rest of their lives together. He goes on an emotional roller coaster ride throughout this entire thing.

What I like about Ryan is that despite being in New York for three years, he is still a sweet, honest guy from Iowa with his manners and weird sense of humor. Another thing that I like about him is that Ryan doesn't want to let go of his faith that there is actually a thing called fate and true love. Is he able to find it though in this subway girl or someone else?
Angie Prince
The Subway Girl CRAngie Prince is just a girl who just wants to help pay off the mortgage on her mom's house, get Celebrity Monger to a national tv company, and to quit that job to find one where she can write what she wants to write. Sadly it happens just not in the way she excepted. Angie is a sweet girl who had a tough time in life. She has spent most of her whole life living in New York. Now she has to deal with everything that her company is doing to exploit Ryan's romance. It's just a very sucky time to be alive.

What I like about Angie is that despite her being a small person, she has a temper that can blow a fuse if someone crosses her the wrong way. Despite that, though, she does have a soft side that she lets loose every once and awhile. Another thing that I like about her is that Angie knows what she wants to do and will fight for it.
Five Stars
The Subway Girl by Lisa Becker is a fantastic book from this author. Each of these romances from this author is significantly different while still ringing the same as some of them are within the same universe. I thought that was cool, especially with ties to the last two romance books I have read from this author. Angie and Ryan are two very different characters that somehow fit in perfectly with each other in a way that neither of them thought was possible. I love reading books from Ms. Becker as she brings the total opposite attracts possible. I am giving this book five stars and recommending it to anyone that loves romance.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of The Subway Girl by Lisa Becker.

Until the next time,

Karen Signature

Happy Reading!

A little bit of swoon is just what I needed. The Subway Girl is a cute, fun romcom that will give you a little bit of everything to make you hold on for the ride.

Have you ever experienced love at first sight? Well, for some it might drive them to take some drastic action just for the possibility of what if. If you are lucky for it to happen by a guy like Ryan, than you know you’ve definitely met your Prince Charming. Well, that is once you realize he’s not a stalker.

Meet our hopeless romantic Ryan. His character is so lovable. Forget all your book boyfriends because he’s definitely the one for every and any gal. Ryan is your typical everyday day Joe. While riding the subway one day, he spots what he thinks is his soulmate, his forever girl. She is aka “the subway girl.” When he realizes that her stop os approaching, he does everything he could but loses her among the crowd. Not knowing what to do, he decides to pursue a search, in hopes to find her. Teaming up with a local reporter, they promote a search in the hope to find this mystery girl. What he finds is that life doesn’t always go according to plan, and in his case, when it comes to love, sometimes fate can take a detour.

Then we have Angie. She isn’t the biggest cheerleader of love or guys at the moment, so when Ryan comes to her about finding this subway girl, she isn’t so thrilled but takes on the job. Deep down, assuming this will lead to nowhere, finds herself drawn into more than the story. As Ryan and Angie find themselves bonding along the way, they both find something unexpected. Will it be everything that he hoped for or did fate have other plans?

I’m not going to ruin it for you but there are some unexpected twists that will give a little angst but from then on, this will be one that you’ll not want to put down.

Overall, I really liked the book. The plot was really interesting especially from the point of view of the reality show aspect of it. It was as if you were following the story as it was happening and had to know what was going to happen. The characters were great especially the chemistry between Ryan and Angie. I found most of their moments pure LOL. Not just them but individual of each other, the relationships they had with their friends was equally wonderful. This is one to add to the tbr list.

Ryan sees a girl on the subway and immediately feels a connection with her. He decides he better make a move to talk to her, but before he gets his chance she's gone. All her remembers are little details - a pink beanie and an English accent.

Ryan is determined to find her and even creates a website to find this mysterious Subway Girl. That's how he ends up being contacted by a celebrity gossip website - to see if they can help Ryan find The Subway Girl.

I won't reveal too much more of the plot, because I don't want to spoil the book! But everyone in the story is vested in Ryan to find the Subway Girl. What we slowly come to understand are the motives why - and some of them definitely ended up surprising me.

I enjoyed the way Lisa was able to highlight both the wonderful aspects of social media/celebrity gossip as well as the pitfalls. Through Ryan's journey, we are able to see what motivates the different characters in The Subway Girl and if their motivation is out of the goodness of their heart or something more sinister.

While the sexy times in The Subway Girl were hot (so hot), I wasn't really invested in the main romance. I do feel like sometimes there were too many voices in the book and those took away from the romance for me.

Audiobook:

Story: 3
Narration: 4
Overall: 3

I'm a big fan of Erin Mallon and I think she did a wonderful job narrating the various characters in The Subway Girl. I could always fell the different emotions that a character was going through.

I enjoyed the audiobook of The Subway Girl! Mystery, romance and a bit of reality TV all combined for an entertaining romance.

I received a complimentary audiobook copy of this book from the author.

What if the person you are meant to be with is someone you might never see again? Sometimes, with a little bit of luck, it's possible to meet your perfect other half in the wildest of places. For Ryan, he sets his sights on 'the subway girl'- a young woman who just happens to be riding the same subway. Frantically, Ryan makes every effort to catch her attention but she, sadly, slips away. This launches a determined search to locate his soulmate, with results that remind all of us we don't always get a say in how fate takes us down the path called life.

Angie is.....not the dream woman. She's the young woman selected by Ryan to help locate the dream girl. The 'subway girl'. A journalist whose own experiences have left her overly wary when it comes to 'happily ever afters', Angie agrees to help Ryan find his alleged soulmate because she is intrigued by his determination in spite of herself. And....perhaps she's a bit fascinated by the young man behind the 'dream girl' fantasy.

'The Subway Girl' is a charming and heartfelt read. Becker presents us with two characters who believe they know what is in store for them but who both, at the end of the day, realize that love and fate are two things you cannot always (or ever!) control. Written with humor, exasperation, soul, and style, Becker's latest story is the perfect read for a very unique summer.

I would like to thank the author for an advance release copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

(audiobook) If you love all the classic romcoms, you’re going to want to read this book.

First, because there are a few references of those movies. Other movies too–filming, and telling a story, and images, have a great importance in the story, on multiple levels.

Also because it has the same spirit as those romcoms. All the steps and events are here. The meeting when they realize they have nothing in common, the building relationship that becomes a little more, all the obstacles, the misunderstanding… I had the strong–yet pleasant–feeling of watching an old classic like Pretty woman or Bridget Jones–okay, not so old, or is it?

I loved that the hero isn’t an alpha male for once. He’s a genuine nice guy, romantic, sweet, a great friend. And Angie is sure no damsel in distress. They’re different but they interact on equal terms.

There’s also a slight criticism of gossip rags, the media in general, how they induce some dreams of celebrity and fame in weaker minds, and how they can threaten/destroy someone personal life. It may have been a bit Manichean, but the message is clear.

The narration was great, with lots of emotions–and even the vapidity of a few characters–perfectly interpreted. It was fun, it was emotional, it was a bit sexy, what are you waiting for?

Quickie

- Series: The subway girl #1 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #romcom #friends to lovers #opposites attract #beta male #fate
- Triggers: a whole lot of cheating (but not from the main characters)
- Main couple: Angie Prince & Ryan Carlson
- Hotness: 3/5
- Romance: 5/5
- + interesting reflection about the media and their influence
- – Barry is so villain-y

The Subway Girl
The Subway Girl, Book 1
By: Lisa Becker
Narrated by: Erin Mallon

Have you ever seen that person that you never met and wonder what would have happened if you approached them? Ryan sees his mysterious Subway girl, but she gets off at her stop before he gets the chance to talk to her. Now with the help of Angie and social media, he is on his way to finding his dream girl. He just doesn't know what his dream girl really is. Fun, flirty, and relevant, Becker pens a story that has a little bit of everything. It has great friendships, fantastic humor, rising passion, social media blunders and the romance of a lifetime. This is a refreshing listen and perfect for the summer! I loved it.

Erin Mallon brings it all to life with her extraordinary narration. I love her voice and every time I listen, find myself just relaxing and enjoying. I know she understands her characters and gives them the feelings and inflections to make the story magic.

This book has a cute premise! It reminded me a lot of Hallmark movies, which I am a fan of! I really liked how the author used a man's search for his "true love" in order to bring two people together that found something in one another that they really needed. Ryan was a wonderfully sweet happy-go-lucky guy, just looking for a girl he can be serious with. While Angie, is a no nonsense woman, who is looking for her big break as a journalist. These two had great chemistry. I felt sorry for Angie, at times, for having to go through watching Ryan being used by her producer. But I felt all she had to do is have one decent conversation with Ryan and all would have been well between them, but then the book would not have been as long. Overall, I enjoyed this book. I would recommend this book to those who love a sweet contemporary romance with a happy ending!

This is such a sweet story. Ryan is so likeable and I love that the big city hasn't taken away his small town values. This genuineness is what comes across in his interviews and inspires hope throughout the city.

Angie is a tough city girl with a big heart that she protects, however, Ryan slips in and as their friendship grows so does their attraction. I love the way the romance sneaks in between them and their steamy scenes are hot! The way these two dance around their feelings is what makes a friends to lovers romance so fun.

I felt like the obstacles in their path were mere blips on the way to a great love story and it was interesting to see the truth come out despite them. Ryan's realization about what he really wanted and Angie's feelings about him were paced so well for this story. This is one of my favorite romances this year and I can't wait to read more from this author!
