Being human is hard, with no shortage of opinions on how to live well. We arrive wide-eyed and curious, then do our best to survive bumpy rides into adulthood. Thoughts, emotions, and judgments hijack our vulnerable unfolding, labels cast upon our developing egos. Sooner or later we wake up, only to discover we don’t really know who we are.

What if there were a way to make peace with your evolving self in an ego-driven world—to practice being in a world of doing? In this book, Health Coach Sheryl Melanson stitches together a collection of practices that help you to break through the illusion of control where so many get stuck. Learn to harness your mindset to reclaim the curiosity, adaptability, compassion, and agency that will reignite your spirit.

I bought this book at the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic (those two events happened to coincide); a time of deep national and existential anxiety. My original intention was to attempt to grapple with my self-doubt as a composer and songwriter (among other things), and to curb my other self-sabotaging thoughts.

Outwardly, I like to consider myself a kind, compassionate, and loving human being. However, inwardly (and over the decades) I have talked about and to myself in not so nice ways with put-downs, telling myself that I'm not good enough, body issues, and that 'everyone else who does what I do can do it better' etc. I would never do that to another person or family member, so why would I do that to myself? The one being that I am perpetually and always with. I should be my own best friend!

Self-compassion (or self-love, self-acceptance) has been considered a narcissistic pursuit, but because of Sheryl Melanson's book, Perspective, I see it as a necessary mindset in order to be a more productive, creative, kinder, and more-at-peace human being.

I am now starting to see myself in a different lens. That's not to say that I am 'cured', but I do find that I am correcting my self-sabotaging ways a lot more. I now meditate. I eat better, and I'm now finishing my songs and posting them (among other small improvements).

Because of the pandemic, lockdowns and unemployment, I've had plenty of time to read Perspective. In fact I am now reading it a second time, this time taking notes, and performing the 'Try it' exercises. As Melanson understands, change is incremental and a continual project. Apparently it's called practicing Kaizen, a Japanese word for 'continuous improvement'.

I believe that this book has made Melanson an essential voice in the relatively new field of Mindfulness, a science and evidence based movement which is gaining steam. We are in a modern world where marketers use every device (literally) and method to make you feel that you are not complete without their product. Being complete, or being at peace, starts from the inside out.

I am so glad to own this book, and I believe I will be reading it a third time, getting more acquainted with its message and the kind, compassionate, and sometimes light hearted way it is conveyed and taught.Sheryl Melanson
