Easily one of my favorite series.. ever. Well written, plot driven and exciting. The characters grow on you making them easily my favorite part. Each edition includes interesting historical details taking this reader to a time and place beyond my imagination. With one more to go in the series, I’m a bit nostalgic about it ending. Nothing I can say will do it justice.

If you like Christian Cameron, Adrian Goldsworthy or Bernard Cornwell, James Clavell, Mary Renault, Ben Kane or Conn Iggulden you wouldn’t be disappointed picking up this series.

The Hundred Years War have me captivated for years, and it is always a pleasure to read an installment of Master of War. I love Thomas Blackstone, with his adventures or misadventures I should say. His admirable loyalty to his King and to deliver justice to everyone involve, even if it meant a danger to himself or his only son. This is an incredible and engrossing tale, another well written novel by David Gilman.

Another entertaining, well-written and action-packed outing for Sir Thomas Blackstone and his company of archers. I was very pleased to see more time spent on Thomas's son Henry as they continue to battle evil - and the French - across Aquitaine during the Hundred Years War. I have to admit, though, that this series might have travelled as far as it can for me and, after six books, I might leave it here. It's a good book but I don't think it adds anything to what has gone before, except for Henry getting more time on the page. I listened to the audiobook, which is very well narrated, although the French accents were a bit much! Review to follow shortly on For Winter Nights.

As I have written before: France during The Hundred Years War suffered complete and total devastation on a scale that modern readers cannot comprehend. When the English and Gascon armies were not ravaging the land on behalf of the English Crown, free companies of routiers were: no one, and nowhere were safe. If you think David Gilman's descriptions of war and chevauchee ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevauc... ) are over the top, think again as they are, in fact, quite accurate.
In this book Sir Thomas Blackstone is back in the service of King Edward III of England as his Master of War, and helping to bring Aquitaine under full English control, however, he gets distracted along the way and shews his shrewd tactical abilities in taking towns, castles, preventing assassination and winning battles.
There is more, but to talk about them may take away your pleasure in reading the book as there are some unexpected twists that had me fooled at times.
Buy: read: enjoy,

I know I'm out of step with many other reviewers here (who have given many 4 and 5 star ratings), but I found this book repetitive and shallow. (I know, I know... many other series I am reading are also repetitive and shallow and I gave them five stars!) Firstly, when I put this book down, I was not compelled to pick it back up - I didn't really care what happened. Secondly, the story moved from one fight to the next with tons of bloody, gritty violence. Just like the real 100 Years' War, there seemed to be no start, no middle, no end...just continuous non-stop swordfights and death. I liked the way the author fleshed out the main characters and the interaction between them seemed to be very contemporary. I think because of the predominance of brutal, bloody, hand to hand combat, I will leave the rest of this series unread.

I have to say sir Gilbert Killbere has me in stitches, his straight forward talking and sharp wit would make anyone think he was a peasant tavern brawler and not the nobleman he is.
A close second is the "throat cutter" Moulin , this Norman man mountain is hard as nails and always has a word to say about the English archers .
Nearing the end of the series now and it's been a fantastic journey through the middle ages .

Amazing journey of fiction entangled with gritty & detailed history

Absolutely love this book & the preceding 5 in the series. Excellently written with fascinating insight into history while following the fictional trails & tribulations of Thomas Blackstone.....raw, brutal, heartfelt & thrilling. Sir Gilbert Killbere is my favourite character though by far....amazingly courageous , rough & ready, but a heart of gold & hilarious sense of humour. This entire series took over all my spare time....David Gilman takes you right back there amongst the thick of it all...please continue with the series

An engrossing romp across medieval France!

The 100 year's war was a fascinating period of English history and this book, although fiction, did not disappoint. This was essentially a civil war involving branches of the same Royal family (English and French). Our hero romped across France, killing everyone in his path, doing his duty for the English branch of the family. There were no goodies or badies in this tale, everyone who wanted to survive had to turn themselves into a killing machine.

Fantastic and fascinating read

The story of Thomas Blackstone continues, the story is well researched and set out. You would think the story gets slower, but you'd be wrong, it's fast paced, exciting and totally gripping right up to the very last paragraph. The whole series has been great and this book doesn't fail to live up to expectation.

Winter, 1362. After years of successful campaigning in France, Thomas Blackstone, a common archer knighted at Crécy, has rised to become Edward III's Master of War.

But the title is as much a curse as a blessing. Success has brought few rewards: his family – bar his son Henry – are dead, slaughtered; his enemies only multiply. Death, in so many guises, beckons.

As he battles to enforce his King's claim to France's lands, Blackstone will assault an impregnable fortress, he'll become embroiled in a feud between French aristocrats, he'll be forced into pitched battle in the dead of winter... and he'll be asked to pay an impossible price to protect something much more precious to the King than mere land...

All the while, a group of trained killers, burning with vengeance, draw ever-closer.

I read this book last 2 months ago and as i write this book review, I hope i can recall some of the chapters that i like in this book. Gilman's novels are one of the most grim and brutal stories that i have read. High praises for the author. I love every chapter and characters in this book. If i could live in this century, i would live as a mercenary have men like the way Thomas Blackstone had. i admire the way Henry thinks. I find him resourceful, intelligent and brave just like his Father. The plot was good and I really love the fight scenes and battle scenes in this book. Especially the way the author wrote the ambush scene when the teutonic knights were about to ambush Blackstone and but it turned out to be the opposite one. The dialogues are written well and the way the characters curses and their humor.

That's it, I will give this book a 5 stars.

Bernard Cornwell fans will enjoy this tale, set in the winter of 1362. It's number six in a series, but that wasn't a problem for me; the story stands alone well.

Thomas Blackstone is a scarred and experienced warrior who has served in countless campaigns and battles, and is now Master of War for Edward III, taking back lands in France and ensuring that treaties that have been made are still strong. With a group of loyal men and a fifteen-year-old son, Henry, he is inadvertently caught up in the feuds of some french aristocrats.

Gilman's descriptions of various battles, assaults on castles and fortresses is vivid and compelling. He manages to convey the bloodlust and violence without lingering there gratuitously. With double-cross betrayals, protection required for a widow, her daughter and her son, as well as trying to keep his own son safe, Blackstone also has to be alert for a number of men who would love nothing better than claim his own head and a cash reward.

This is a great story with pace, colour and intrigue, characters you will root for as well as some you'll loathe, and it will grip you right until the end.

I would give this 4.5.
The series is very enjoyable and I look forward to each new volume.
Without spoilers.
Have to say the way this was tidied up was a little to convenient and spoiled it a little. I’d rather have lose ends from the minor characters than this.
Zero credibility here.
However, it is Thomas Blackstone and I really love this character and Sir Gilbert.
So I can easily forgive and read on but it did take me “out of the book” for a while.
This would make a cracking tv production as long as heavy metal guitars and cool walking with swords over shoulders could be avoided.
The basic life of the fighting men of the day help make this a great read.
It moves at quite a pace as well.
Fully recommend all six.

Another terrific entry in Gilman's Master of War series. This one was one of the most tightly plotted of the series, with excellent twists and turns, breathless intrigue, bloody battles and plots galore. I love novels that tell their stories against the backdrop of actual historical events, and this one does that very well, set in a very volatile period in history. Looking forward to the latest in the series, and I hope the author continues to put out books about Thomas Blackstone and his compatriots. Perhaps one day Henry Blackstone will take over as the main character? Good books, some of the best historical fiction you will find in Kindle Unlimited.

Great new instalment

Gilman keeps us going with another consistent edition of the Blackstone series. By now we know Sir Thomas is stubborn to a fault, but from a guy perspective, we are too caught up in the detailed battle scenes and deft sword skills to be bothered by character faults. The core group of characters brings consistency and familiarity with some new ones brought in to change up the rhythm. I really enjoy that Gilman gets into the history underlying this story. Thanks David. We enjoyed it!

Another chapter in the adventures of Thomas Blackstone. Wasn't as fond of this book's story arc as I was of the others, but it does contain elements of classic Blackstone. The tactical awareness, action, politics, etc. Also, there was a lot more content about his son Henry in this book, which may result in a continuation of the story through his son at some point. Could prove to be an exciting development. Overall, it felt like a setup book for further adventures but I still enjoyed reading it.

I was really excited for this book to come out as I love Thomas Blackstone and his merry band. The dialogue, action and different life-threatening situations were all there, however I felt the story lacked a little in this one.

I felt like not much happened. Other then Thomas defying the odds once again, and a deeper look into his son (I loved that he didn't go back and rescue Henry), the story lacked in character development and the vast importance of the raiding in France in the time of the 100 year war.

Looking forward to the next one nonetheless.

Never disappoints

Yet another riproaring, swashbuckling, blood and thunder adventure with the scar faced knight Sir Thomas Blackstone and his loyal band of followers.

As Always the pace is fast, the storylines flow breathlessly and the action non stop.

The best and cleverest part of this tale is the development of an emerging Henry Blackstone, traits of his own father breaking the surface and leaving us wondering what lies in store for him .

Just love all of these books and can't wait for the next thrilling encounter.

Good for the world of historical fiction that Mr David Gillman became a full time author in the mid 1980s - this is the 6 book in the Master of War series ; my first and it makes me plan to pick up a few more by Gillman.

The novel is about Thomas Blackstone - his loyalty to king, love for his son and his leadership over a band of fighters as they face assassins, battles and conflict in the wintry months of France in the 1300s.

The actions of the Teutonic knights gives insights to the turmoil of knights and warriors in a world of swords and armour .

A lot went on in this book, but it still does not have the grip and suspense of the earlier books. If you did not already know Thomas, you probably would not be too keen to finish the book. There was also no major battle and so the book ended with nothing really happening (from a historical perspective). and why do Thomas' women keep getting killed off? Why not give Thomas some love? He must also be The Terminator: cross bolt in his chest, broken leg, thrown in a sewer, but he still survives!

Another Absolute Cracker

If I could award six stars I would. The Master of War books were enthralling, captivating, and excellent reads. Cross of Fire once again captures the rawness of the time with desperate men fighting for survival in tough surroundings. The quality of the writing and non stop action is responsible for many late nights. I commend this book to anyone who likes action and a very good story line accompanied by historical notes. Thank you again David Gilman.

Great continuity and I love the characters. What I did not like was the brevity and what I mean is each interaction (and there were a few) was written to get to the next scene. Each interaction with enemies seemed scripted to get it over so they could move onto the next scene. In this book you were transported to a different era and its amazing but the key moments were so brief you lose the substance of the story.

Thankyou to NetGalley, Head of Zeus and the author, David Gilman, for the opportunity to read a digital copy of Cross of Fire in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion.
I thought this book provided a good, quality read with high attention to detail. Action packed with well developed characters. 3.5 stars.

Great historical novel series

The author, as in the preceding books of the series, has captured the energy of a novel and the authenticity of the historical context. The writing is both descriptive and moving. It doesn't lag at any point; keeping the reader's interest and sense of time and place, historically and graphically. I hope there will be more sequels.

The Ultimate Worrier.

Blackstone was the ultimately leader and worrier. Followed loyally into battle. He was an intelligent and instinctive battle hardened knight who chose loyalty to his king and prince over anything else.
This book was hard to put down, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good adventure story.

Another cool book about war between England and France. England says it’s mine, then France says no, it’s mine. The people have no idea who is their king week to week. The kings are like a couple of 2 year olds fighting over a toy. I guess whoever has it gets the tax money generated from it, but after all the battles, burning, stealing the soldiers do there isn’t much to get taxes from.
