There are several typos, and I don't agree with the underlying worldview, but the main message of the book is right on. It is vital that we keep this message alive. I loved and devoured this book.

If you're not sure where you stand in terms of the kind of midwife you want to be (or if you are), or where you stand in the politics of birth (or if you are), it's very important that you read this book. Even if you don't end up agreeing with Maryn and Margo, there are things you can learn from them, and it's important that this part of the spectrum is heard.

No one person is the leading expert on birth... Why? Because birth is different for every person who gives birth, and even for one birthing parent, it can be different with every single baby they have. Maryn and Margo share their ideas about birth and what it can look like in a world where a patriarchal medical system isn't the norm... In a world where birthing parents are allowed to trust their bodies and their babies. This is the sort of world I believe in as someone soon to begin training as a doula, and hopefully eventually becoming a midwife myself. While I absolutely don't agree with every single word in this book, I do agree with the idea that birth, most of the time, isn't a medical emergency. It's a natural process. And while it can be dangerous, it's not inherently dangerous by virtue of being.

The most important things that both birthing parents and birth workers should know are that no two pregnancies or births are the same (Even the birth of one twin and then the other twin can be vastly different!) and we don't need to rush to induce labor or have emergency C-sections just because things aren't going exactly the way we expect. It's birth. It's life. Expect the unexpected.

Holy cow, loved this book. It's message is one that really jived with my heart. There are some typos and editorial errors, noticeable but not distracting from the message. The book has a really nice balance of how to/practicality with stories that stick with you. Also the transparency... Wow, just wow. Really contributed to me not being able to put the book down. A book about a movement, that really summarizes an idea.
