A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies

Rate this book
The last thing Emerson Rose expects is to fall for his best friend, Rhys, especially since he’s never been attracted to a man before. Everything in his life is already complicated enough. He’s put his own future on hold to raise his two younger siblings, and confusing feelings for the guy who always has his back muddy the waters even more. But then something astonishing happens. For one perfect moment, he thinks Rhys might feel the same—only to have his world come crashing down around him a second time.

Rhys Lancaster has always known he’s gay and that Emerson isn’t. Best friends since childhood, their easy companionship has usually been enough. Between his job, his adrenaline-filled adventures, and hanging out with Emerson and his siblings, he has it good…until he wakes up in the hospital with no memories of the last year of his life.

Like they normally do when things go horribly wrong, Rhys and Emerson support each other. Frustrated by all he’s lost, Rhys stays with Emerson during his recovery, and Emerson helps Rhys through the fog, while pushing those other feelings aside. To make matters worse, Rhys knows Emerson’s keeping something from him. Everything feels different now when he looks at Emerson, and as they fall into a comfortable routine, that aching desire doesn’t stay buried for long.

But Emerson has a family to raise, and Rhys is struggling to figure out what’s going on inside his head. Unless they can push past the doubts and fears to seal that connection between them again, this tragedy might become the one each has to weather alone.

A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies by Christina Lee is the beautifully written story of two best friends that just when their friendship is about to develop into more is derailed by an accident.

There was so much to love about this book. The feelings of longing and love are captured beautifully. The flow of the story is seamless, and it is impossible not to fall in love with all the characters.

It had:

-Dual POVs
-Bi awakening
-Demi rep
-Found family
-Memory loss
-Best friends to lovers
-UST

And the ending was heartfelt.

A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies may be my favorite book of Lee's to date.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

The writing style is not working for me at all. There's too much telling and explaining instead of showing. Too many internal monologues. Too many cases when characters think about things in retrospect, instead of at the time when they happened. All of this is taking me out of the story and preventing me to connect to the characters. The story just feels disjointed to me.

This author's books are usually a hit or miss for me. I was really hoping this one would be among those I love.

Overall, this was a nice, feel good read.

No unnecessary drama.

Likable characters.

Relationship development felt believable, but it was definitely a sloooooooow build. The pacing was definitely a bit slow for my liking.

It wasn't a long book but it took me longer to read.

I'd recommend this one.

Here I am, loving another amnesia romance. Surprise, surprise!

This was sweet, quiet, slow. It was about friendship and family. About losing parts of yourself and starting over. Falling in love with your best friend.

“Tell me again how we fell in love?” His heart stuttered. “We?” “Uh-huh. You and me falling in love.” “Slowly…” he replied in a hoarse voice. “During the bigger and smaller moments in our lives…” “And all the spaces in between,” Emerson murmured.

A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies was such a heartwarming love story. It's a story of best friends who have always been there for each other, through all the ups and downs of their young lives, through the tragedies and triumphs, discovering and creating a family of their own. While this could have been a very heavy, emotional book due to the hand Emerson had been dealt in life and everything Rhys was going through, Ms. Lee instead gave us a truly endearing friends-to-lovers story.
Emerson is such a wonderful character- so caring and loving with his younger sister and brother. I adored the little family they created, along with Rhys. And Rhys is such an incredible friend, not only to Emerson, but to his sister and brother as well.
I really enjoyed being along for the journey as Rhys and Emerson's friendship turned to love. They truly are the sweetest and were so lucky to have each other. A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies left me with a smile on my face and a happy heart.

Gorgeous read.

A delightful tear jerker of a story. Typical Christina Lee, full of emotion and heartfelt characters. The story is one of friendship and loss told through the eyes of Emerson and Rhys. Ms Lee did a sterling job, she really did. Her character building meant that I fell
quickly in love with both Rhys and Emerson, and with the supporting characters too.

The story is both heartbreaking and beautiful. It was also very well written, I felt all the MCs emotions and uncertainty, right alongside them. The writing is beautifully done, and exceptionally vivid, I totally found myself immersed in the lives of Rhys, Emerson and his brother and sister.

Overall, it's just a beautiful romance, which totally pulled at my heartstrings, and one I'll definitely read again. I loved it all, but my favourite part was the ending 😍 And that cover, totally swoon worthy, and lovely. Definitely one of my favourite book covers ever. ❤️

I wish I could say that I loved this book fully. but, I can’t.

It was extremely slow for me. It took me so long to read to 41%!!! I kept putting it down to do other things. One of the main reason was the way the book was written. I like books to flow naturally. Let the characters interact with each other... like a conversation.
This book tells you how everything went down. Books written in third person hardly click with me. That’s why I try to stay away from them.

I had a really hard time connecting with the main characters. Only one thing happens between Rhys and Emerson before the accident happened.
Then... it really does go at a snails pace for things to start moving along.

I’m sorry! I feel bad... But, I tried. I’ll try picking this book back up later. But for now... I’m moving on.

Sweet but I thought the writing style was basic and lackluster at times. I found myself pushing to finish this, even though I was interested in what was going on, which mainly stemmed from not feeling as connected to the characters as I wished. It wasn't as angsty or emotional as I expected, considering the plot, which may be more on me than the author. I enjoyed Emerson's relationship with his siblings, who he was raising, and the heartfelt friendship between Emerson and Rhys.

I liked it a lot but didn't love it as my friends did. It was beautiful, it was sweet and tender, but for me it was slower than I'd like and with many back and forths. Emerson was also a bit too cautious, too playing it safe for me to actually like as a hero, even if I could see where he was coming from. Anyway: beautiful but not up to the hype it has built IMHO.

What a beautiful story of friends to more. It’s the ones who stick by you even through the hard times. I really enjoyed watching these two get here. What can I say besides the obvious - I LOVED LOVED LOVED this book. Loved Emerson and Rhys, the interaction between the two, the family connection. The tenderness, the love. Best Friends to Lovers is one of my absolute favorite tropes and there is also something to be said about dealing with amnesia that always appealed to me in these kind of romance novels. It's the chance to re-get to know yourself, the people around you and make different decisions than you did before.

Emerson and Rhys have known each other their entire lives, besides being neighbors the two families completed one another for years and though as teenagers they slightly pulled apart from each having different interests - Emerson being the quiet reserved guy and Rhys outgoing and adventurous - the connection never failed. When a devastating car accident take the lives of Emerson and his two siblings parents the heart broken Emerson takes charge of the younger kids, putting aside his own dreams and aspirations. Rhys feels like he has lost a set of parents himself and he tries his best to be by Emerson's side to comfort and reassure he is there for him and always will be.

4 years have past by and though not a lot of changed something sort of did in the last year, at least for Emerson Rose. He has started questioning his sexuality. Not only because he has NO time to date these past few years but because his feeling towards Rhys confuse him. Can he be attracted to his best friend? When did THAT happen? His search leads him to the realization he is Demisexual. It's not about the sexual identity of the person it's about the connection they share. With everything Rhys and him went through together it's only natural that at a certain point Emerson would realize THIS is the person he wants on his side. The guy who has always been there.

While still confused yet wanting to maybe try? Emerson and Rhys share a kiss. But after getting "caught" by Audrey (Emerson's sister), Rhys leaves without a word and the next time they meet Rhys is missing the memories of the past year due to a rock climbing accident. Emerson is devastated. Losing his parents broke him, he CANNOT lose Rhys as well. Putting what happened between them that night aside he brings Rhys into their home to care for him until he regains his independence. With a head injury, broken ribs and a lot of bruises all over he needs the Rose family now and all three of them are definitely on board.

Rhys Lancaster feels lost and confused. He hurts, he is frustrated. The world around him is not how it used to be. Even the couch in his house is not the one he remembers. He doesn't want to be a burden on the Rose family but truth being told, for him, it's like staying with family. He enjoys his time with Audrey and Sam, but he is a bit confused about what's going on between him and Emerson. He feels like the last year something HAPPENED. Something he should have remembered. Emerson is hiding something from him, but what? The shared looks between Emerson and Audrey is making it even worse but as the doctors made it clear it's better to not overwhelm Rhys with the details of his life he has missed Emerson has his excuse right there.

The time Rhys stays with the Rose family can almost be called the happiest of his life. His mother might be miles away in Florida with her boyfriend (he dislikes) but he is surrounded by the people he loves, his OWN family even if not by name. Spending meals together, laughing about Emerson's inability to cook (but also helping him get better), watching TV together, going on walks. It's the domestic life he didn't have in the empty house he lived in right across the street.

I won't say when and how but somehow the cat is out of the bag. But though it feels natural for them to be together, there are still somethings left unspoken and there are too many fears on both their ends about truly taking a chance on their friendship. Losing each other is NOT an option so they thread very carefully. It was heart breakingly beautiful seeing these two re-discover each other this way. Wanting so much more but being afraid of the consequences. They lost too much and though they can gain a lot by being together, the other possibility is heart wreaking to even consider.

This book was impossible to put down, with the alternating POVs of both guys every page turned (or rather pressed ;)) brought us deeper into the story, into their hearts and the wish of seeing them happy - happier - together was getting stronger and stronger. As I started this review I loved everything about this book, about this couple about the two families and how they entwined together. I also loved Emerson as Demisexul. It's not something we see a lot in romance novel and I wish we'd see more often.

These are complicated frightening times with the COVID-19 all around us. Being quarantined, not knowing what's going to happen, how tomorrow is going to be. Which also means it's the EXACT time to read this book as the perfect comfort.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I kindly received this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was an emotional and beautiful story of two friends who discover their feelings for each other. Unfortunately Rhys suffers amnesia and cannot remember their first kiss and Emerson doesn’t want to bombard him with something that he isn’t even sure was real in the first place. But Emerson’s feelings continue to grow as he looks after Rhys after his accident and Rhys knows there’s something he isn’t being told. He’s always been attracted to Emerson but thought Emerson was straight.

I loved the family aspect of this book. Emerson is raising his younger brother and sister and the relationship between all of them and Rhys was lovely! The family plays a huge part in the story and it works perfectly. Rhys and Emerson don’t have a lot in common but their friendship works. When they do realize they both have feelings for each other it isn’t rushed and it is just so touching and beautiful.

This was a wonderful story that really packed an emotional punch. I loved it!

This was an enjoyable read for me. I was excited after reading the blurb and the best friends to lovers trope is my hands down fave. I liked the concept, loved Em and Rhys, but despite some very beautiful and tender moments, their story never quite took flight for me. That being said, it was enjoyable and definitely worth a look. 3.5 stars.

"To anyone else, it would look like complete destruction, but really, it’s all about transformation and becoming something else entirely. And the wings they create from almost nothing are incredible.”

Emerson and Rhys have been best friends since early childhood, and they've been there at every turn.

When Emerson loses his parents, and has to step up and be the parent for his younger siblings, Rhys is there for all of them as best he can. As the boys grow, and age into young men, Em is more and more aware that he's attracted to Rhys. Rhys is the first one to reach out and kiss Em, but then he bolts.

Emerson is confused by why Rhys left, and thinking about talking to him, but then Rhys is injured in a rock climbing accident and left with a traumatic brain injury. Emerson can't risk losing him by pushing a conversation about a kiss he doesn't remember, so he just hunkers down and tries to move on.

What follows is one of the sweetest, most heartwrenching love story I've ever read, and the sex is pretty off the charts too! 6 beautiful ⭐s for this phenomenal book by Christina Lee!

Transformation❣️

The crux of this romantic tale between Rhys & Emerson is traumatic incidents and finally, Love. A likable, if a bit emotional read, with sexy MCs. OTOH, the flashback years was not my favorite read. I understand the purpose of the flashbacks to demonstrate the intense friendship between the MCs, but it did nothing to capture my attention. Also, the prolonged angst between and surrounding the MC’s was a bit tedious.
An aside: I think I’ve read too many of these angst-riddled, halted dialogue, non-communicating, stuck in their heads, romantic tales.
Overall, a good but angsty read. BTW, I think Neil needs his story told!

Wow, Christina Lee's A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies is a stunning read. This character driven romance is an absolute must read.

Emerson and Rhys are best friends and neighbors. They have both suffered too much loss in their lives. And now Rhys losses a year of his life, and a large part of himself to his accident. His story is one of trying to figure out who he is now and it's absolutely riveting.

This is a story of trying to preserve the strength of one's friendship. This is a story about trying to protect one's heart. It's a story about the fear of going from friends to lovers. It's a story of losing one's best friend. And every single second is amazing.

The author illustrates in a spectacular manner, that sometimes it takes a loss to face one's fears. These are characters for whom accidents have shaped their lives. The author excels in demonstrating that in loss, we gain other things, as with Emerson and Rhys, they may gain a new kind of family.

The author's character development is extraordinary. She has brought to life some spectacular people, including young Sam, who is a wise, old soul.

Then there's the emotional rollercoaster. Damn, just damn. I felt every single second of this book as if it was happening to me. The ups, the downs, the hope, the despair, the longing, the fear. All of it.

Then there's the title. Wow, I just love the title and it's meaning in this story. It's impressive in both it's symbolism and importance.

As for quotes, this one perfectly sums up Emerson's demisexuality perfectly.
"I was slowly falling in love with you...during all the bigger and smaller moments in our lives...and all the spaces in between." Honestly, I don't think the author could have done any better with exploring this type of sexuality.

A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies is impressive and absolutely beautiful. Set time aside for this Christina Lee book, as you'll want to read it in one sitting. It is exquisite!

Are you looking for that one book that grabs you from the start and wraps you up in a warm hug by the end, if so then this book is for you. Christina Lee has an innate ability to bring her characters to life. She is very good at character building, story telling and scene setting. I could picture the characters in my minds eye, hear their voices, feel their pain and envision the scenes depicted. Books like this are why I love to read, especially this genre. I couldn't put it down.

Kaleidoscope of Butterflies is about friendship, grief, heartache, love and how two young men cope with it all and come out the other side transformed. I was teary eyed throughout this book and fell in love with Rhys and Emerson. They are now my favourite couple.

There are two other characters in this book that stood out for me, Sam and Audrey. Audrey for her maturity for such a young girl and Sam for his nerdy sweetness.

There is always a point in a book where the title makes sense and in this book it was very apropos. It could have been titled Kaleidoscope of Emotions because I went through so many while reading.

5 stars doesn't do this book justice. .

I loved the blurb for this book and I couldn’t wait to dig in. While the story was good, it wasn’t one of my favorites by this author.

Rhys and Emerson were likable guys and I loved the premise of their story, but I was frustrated throughout most of it. The story moved so slow, it gave new meaning to the slow burn, and I found myself wanting to skim/rush ahead to get to the meat of the story.

I never felt like I got to really see or enjoy Rhys and Emerson as a couple. They spent the majority of the story as just friends, unknowingly mooning over one another and I was left wanting more. I wanted to see them together as a couple, and I wanted more romance and I just never felt like that happened.

What I did love was Emerson’s siblings, Sam and Audrey. They were great secondary characters and I loved the relationship between them the four of them. I also loved Rhys’ mom.

Overall, I’m sorry to have to say, I just wanted more from this story, but I love Ms. Lee, and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s coming next from her, *cough* Neil’s story *cough*.

I absolutely loved this book! It is totally my jam.

Friends to lovers books are my favourite and this one was written so, so well! I adored Rhys and Emerson.

Emerson the gorgeous red head who becomes the guardian of his younger sister and brother after a tragic accident is everything! He has the biggest heart. He gives up on his dreams to take care of his siblings. His life goes on hold but he has the friendship of Rhys to keep his spirits up.

Rhys is the openly gay man who worships his straight best friend. An accident has Rhys reeling but Em will be strong enough for both of them. See! Adorbs!

Damn those boys they have my total and utter devotion. Christina Lee take a bow - this book is bloody brilliant!

The storyline is good. I really enjoy the friends to lovers theme and the relationship development was good. The problem I had here revolves around the writing style, it just didn’t work for me and stunted my ability to enjoy it. If I’m being objective this book would probably rate a lot higher with most people.
