Gettin' (Un)Busy: 5 Steps to Kill Busyness and Live with Purpose, Productivity, and Peace

Rate this book

Forbes - "One of the books everyone on your team should read."

Everyone is busy. And it’s killing us all.

Hurry is the new normal. When someone asks us how we’re doing, we tell them that we’re “good… but busy.” We want to achieve our dreams and live a significant life, so we cram our calendars with nonstop activities.

Instead of feeling fulfilled, we’re distracted, exhausted, and overwhelmed. We have too much to do and not enough time.

But it doesn’t have to be this way!

Garland Vance knows how you feel. In Gettin’ (un)Busy, he shares how he nearly burned out while leading a nonprofit, having a family, and working on his doctorate in leadership and spiritual formation. He discovered a powerful, proven, and research-driven system that will help you shed stress, accomplish your dreams, and love life. You will

•the inhibiting beliefs that keep you trapped in busyness

•why time management isn’t the solution

•how to attain your biggest goals

•the unwanted commitments that keep you from your priorities

•how to take control of your life so that you don’t burn out

•and much more….

If you’re ready to do less, get more done, and enjoy life, it’s time to get (un)busy!

This book did tend to repeat itself, could have been shorter, and there were parts that gave me anxiety with all his “scheduling” tactics, BUT definitely had some 5 star ideas that I need to implement in my life, give myself margin between commitments, use the mom card and limit how many things my kids can do (I struggle with this, I have a few kids that want to do everything!😂) I need more sleep, personal morning time/rituals including meditation, creating “white space” on my calendar. I need to get Un-Busy!

I had really low expectations for this book because I thought the name was dumb. It turned out having great insight for improving life by cutting busyness in a meaningful way. It convinced me I need to focus more on the truly important things and let go of some stuff.

It’s so true how we get so busy with good commitments. But really, having more space in our transitions and fewer things on our calendar allows us to live more presently with more peace.

Probably could have been 25% shorter. Mostly stuff that was pretty obvious. There are probably people who need this book, but I admit, I don't think I know of any of them.

Q: When did busy become a Status Symbol?

The 3 Myths:
Identity- I need to BE more
Activity- I need to DO more
Quantity- I need to GET more

Seven Hypothesis. 1) We Glorify Busy 2) Job Security
3) FOMO 4) Digital Intrusion 5) Filling Time 6) Necessity
7) Escapism
