She's over fifty, overweight, and in way over her head!
It’s well known that working in movies can be cutthroat, but no one expected that to be taken literally.
It’s party time on board the Aurelia! On the LA to Hawaii leg, a Hollywood film crew are shooting scenes for a new action movie and Barbie has been given a bit-part role. It’s all great fun and Patricia isn’t surprised when her cute, blonde friend attracts the attention of the handsome A-lister male lead.
But when he is found murdered in the upper deck pool and the killer leaves a message saying Barbie is next, it falls to Patricia to work out who the killer is.
With her trusted butler, Jermaine, good friend, Barbie, and lame-duck Shane Sussmann, an odd-looking film extra she befriended, Patricia will have plenty of help as she unravels the truth. The prime suspect has an ironclad alibi though and there is definitely something going on with the film’s beautiful female lead.
Will there be more bodies? Will the new deputy captain be of assistance this time? Will Jermaine be able to serve tea at four o’clock?
It’s going to take more than luck to solve this one. Can she survive The Director’s Cut?
Praise for Steve Higgs: 'Be prepared to struggle with getting anything else done, as you will want to keep reading.' 'Truly delightful tales of mystery and misadventure.' 'Higgs is a wonderful author with great character development which includes an enticing cast of misfits.' 'A great crime comedy with a group of zany characters. I really enjoyed the book and look forward to the next one. Highly recommended!' 'Higgs makes everything and everyone come alive.'
Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.
When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.
Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.
The Director's Cut by Steve Higgs was another fun cozy read with Patty, Barbie and Jermaine. This time they have a Hollywood film crew on board as they cruise to Hawaii. Murder, mayhem and a twist at the end that I did not see coming.
Patricia Fisher is off on another cruise on the Aurelia. Her friend, Barbie, has a role in an action movie being filmed on the ship. Barbie is highly attractive, so it’s no surprise when the leading man takes an interest. What is a shock is when he’s discovered dead and a note threatening Barbie is found. What’s Patricia to do? With bodyguards set to protect Barbie, Patricia gets to work to find the killer.
As always, uproarious events ensue in this third book in the Patricia Fisher mystery series. It’s filled with surprises. As with the others in this series, it’s easily read as a stand-alone book. It has enough twists and turns to keep you involved, interested, and laughing out loud.
I received a free copy of this book from the author through Audible. I thank all involved for their generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.
I've now read three of these little mysteries and I am glad they were free. They are clearly written by a man, and I find them fairly awful. The portrayal of female characters is so flat that it is distracting to the tangled plotlines. I'm abandoning the series at this point, just an utter waste of time. These are pale knockoffs of Stephanie Plum with less interesting characters and absurd mafia driven battle scenes. I can. It reconcile the same character who blushes at a public kiss also informs multiple coworkers about her period and tampon needs-- none of rings even slightly true. It all just feels like a male author pretending badly to write about female things. I would highly recommend Agatha Raisin for a middle aged badass female who tumbles into detection.
I enjoyed the first two books in this series, but this one was just a bit too ridiculous, and the character of Shane Sussman was unbelievably irritating. The book would also have benefited from a more thorough proof reading for small editorial errors. However I will stick with the series and try the next book in the hopes that the standard goes back up.
The Director's Cut by Steve Higgs is the 3rd book in the Patricia Fisher Cruise Ship Mysteries series. The Aurelia is the stage for scenes in a Hollywood action movie when the male lead is murdered and Barbie finds herself targetted, leading Patricia Fisher on the hunt for the killer. An excellent short and quick cozy mystery. Patricia hasn't had much luck with the body count on her cruise so far, but it is nice to see her become more confident and stronger. Lots of fun, although the culprit was rather obvious.
The Aurelia docked in Los Angeles just long enough to pick up a film crew, but Patricia Fisher is already missing her bibulous friend, Lady Mary, as she and Jermaine, her devoted butler, watch superstar Tarquin Trebeck in action on deck. He dodges bullets and bombs while filming a scene with their friend Barbie, the gym instructor who’s helped Patricia transform her body and spirit. She’s picked up a small role in his latest film because the actress hired for the role broke her ankle when she slipped poolside after having a few too many glasses of champagne.
At dinner that night, the film’s producer, Ian Kenyon, makes a rude remark about Barbie, which results in Tarquin exacting humiliating revenge. Kenyon vows ruin, so when Trebeck is found floating in the very pool he was dashing around earlier, his throat slit, the producer is the natural suspect. A gnome-like film crew member, Shane Sussman, insists Kenyon is the killer and drags Patricia into another amateur investigation.
However, Mr. Ikari, the deputy captain and security head, clears Kenyon of suspicion, which enrages Sussman and baffles Patricia and Jermaine. The latter have their hands full helping Barbie, though, as her gym locker was booby-trapped with a knife and her photo in the gym smeared with a threat in red paint, all while she’s mourning the loss of her co-star.
While Barbie stays in Patricia’s suite for her safety, along with a pair of bodyguards— Lieutenants Pippin, an eager young officer barely out of his teens and Charpentier, an boorish former French Foreign Legionnaire — Patricia continues investigating Trebeck’s murder, relentlessly pushed by Shane, who’s unable to let go of his belief in Kenyon’s guilt, even when Patricia and Jermaine learn the top-secret reason he’s not a suspect. Despite Barbie’s bodyguards, life for the trio grows more dangerous until Patricia and Jermaine accidentally discover the source.
The world-traveling amateur sleuth’s third adventure is her most exciting so far, with fast-paced cinematic thrills, intriguing drop-ins by the captain, and a momentary hint of the future. Steve Higgs has produced yet another superb adventure for Patricia, Jermaine, and Barbie aboard the Aurelia.
Leaving Los Angeles for Hawaii the cruise liner has taken on board a group of actors and other assorted film crew who are filming the last in a series of action thriller films. Due to an accident Barbie, one of the gym instructors/personal trainers has been recruited to take the part which was to have been fulfilled by the woman who had the accident. It didn't matter too much as the character was killed part way through the film so Barbie only had around a weeks worth of filming to do. All was going well and the filming finished when the first dead body arrived. The main male lead in the series was dead and there were a number of people who had disagreed with him in the course of the day. But one member of the film crew is certain he knows who did it, and continues to assert this even after the person in question has been proved to have a rock solid alibi. Things accelerate when it appears that the killer is also targeting Barbie for reasons no one can work out. Despite promising not to investigate Patricia Fisher becomes involved when further attacks on Barbie are made and she insists Barbie moves into her suite of rooms for protection, accompanied by two security guards. Then one is taken out of commission, being the victim of an attack intended to kill Barbie. Despite promising not to get involved Patricia gets dragged into the investigation, has to sign a non disclosure agreement as part of a secondary investigation occurring into other members of the film crew - over a totally different crime - and only discovers the truth when she and Barbie, plus a security guard, are attacked in her suite. Just as they arrive in Hawaii everything is solved, both the murder(s), the attacks on Barbie and members of the security team as well as the parallel investigation and Patricia is left wondering whether her estranged husband will indeed be waiting for her in Hawaii as he had threatened. A brilliant book which was impossible to put down once I had started reading. I will be beginning the next book in the series as soon as possible. A riveting series indeed.

This is another great adventure with Patricia. I just love her character so much as she is so funny and vivacious. This is another great little mystery for her to solve. Great plot and story line and love all the supporting characters. Very well written and enjoyable. Recommend reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
After the Aurelia docks in Los Angeles Patricia has to say goodbye to her friend Lady Mary.. There are a group of actors and all of the people it takes to make a movie coming aboard at this stop. The star is Tarquinius Trebeck. Barbie, one of the gym in structures and a friend of Patricia is picked for a small role by Tarquinius himself when the orgininal actress breaks her ankle. At dinner Ian Kenyon, the film’s producer makes a rude remark about Barbie which results I Tarquinius exacting a humorous revenge. So when Tarquinius Trebeck is found floating in the pool with a cut throat. Ian goes to the top of several peoples list including Patricia’s. But the Deputy Captain and the Security Head both clear Ian saying he has an iron clad alibi. Then Barbie’s locker is booby trapped and if she had been in front of it when she opened it, rather than more to the side the knife that stuck in the wall across from her locker would have struck her in the chest Barbie moves into Patricia’s suite along with two of the ships Security. Of course many more things happen and the action doesn’t stop until the end but I do not want to give away any spoilers. Steve Higgs makes his Patricia Fisher books so much fun, I will continue to read.

The cruise ship has left LA and enroute to Hawaii. There is now a film crew onboard. The opening segment is shooting of a film scene. Barbie has been asked to join the cast as the person she is replacing injured her ankle. Sparks fly between her and the leading man, Tarquin. After dining at the Captain's table, Tarquin is found dead in the pool the next morning. And someone booby trapped Barbie's locker. Patty, of course, steps in and invites Barbie to live in her suite where she will be safer. And Patty can not keep out of solving this mystery. This book has lots of twists and turns. Although, I had a hunch who the killer was, it was a fun read getting to that final point.
This is the third book in the A Patricia Fisher Mystery. This is a fun cozy murder mystery. I liked to follow Patricia's sleuthing! She is a wonderful character! No dull moments with her! The mystery unfolds at a great pace, and is filled with action, and twists and turns. The cast of supporting characters is impressive. This is a great addition to the Series. Katherine Anderson did a great job with the narration. I enjoyed it. I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
On this leg of Patricia Fisher's cruise covering LA to Hawaii a film company is filming an action movie. Patricia's friend personal trainer Barbie was hired to replace an actress who broke her ankle. But production comes to a halt when the lead is found in the pool with his throat cut. At the same time Barbie has a near fatal attempt on her life. Patricia starts sleuthing to save her friend. Lots of guns and other weapons used all over the ship with seemingly little awareness by any of the other passengers. Suspend belief on cruise procedure and security and have fun with this.
I don't mind a wild plot or inconsistencies or just plain nutty things happening but there is a limit. In the rare instance where a book is too over-the-top for me, you can bet it really is over-the-top. I've found the books written by Steve Higgs to be entertaining and, for the most part, enjoyable reading. This one simply had too much unnecessary violence and too much that didn't make sense. I still like the series concept and the characters so I'm hoping the next one will be better.
Not really being a fan of mystery books, or movies for that matter, I did read this one based on a write up about the series authored by Steve Higgs. This particular book is one of ten in the series and is actually third in the order as written. A lot of action takes place, much of it unrealistic in my opinion. However, I am going to read at least a couple more of the series since they are relatively light reading allowing one to not havjng to be deeply immersed in plot details.
This book is the third in a new series and it did not disappoint! I have read everything this author has written and can't wait for more. More crazy characters, more crazy situations and more laughs make this book another in the category of don't plan to do anything else until you have read the last page.
This is a fun and entertaining storyline. Patricia and her friends are well developed and likeable. The plot and subplots move quickly making it hard to put the book down. I'm looking forward to Patricia moving on in her personal life in future installments.
I think these books are so great! I feel as if I have made a new friend in Patricia Fisher. Her life aboard the cruise ship and her new friend Barbie, her butler Jermaine and the Captain. The plots are so suspenseful and exciting. I'm ready for the next. Thanks so much for writing these for your adoring fans!!!
The Director's Cut (Patricia Fisher Mystery Cruise Mysteries #3), my third read/listen from author Steve Higgs. Well written & enjoyable. Narrator Katherine Anderson’s added to the book's listening enjoyment. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Barbie is selected for a bit part in a movie being filmed onboard. When the leading man is found dead, Patricia tries to stay out of it until Barbie is targeted. Her #1 suspect has an ironclad alibi, but she doesn't believe it. Captain Huntley shows more interest in her and she informs her husband that she wants a divorce. He says he will meet her in Hawaii, she is hoping to avoid him.
I love Patricia’s series. There are enough mysteries to be intriguing and enough personal drama to keep you coming back for more. The Director’s Cut didn’t disappoint. I am loving the way Patricia is emerging from her old dowdy self into a vibrant woman.
This one kept me guessing. Barbie gets to be an actress and then the star, handsome and attracted to her, is murdered. And someone is trying to kill her, too. Mrs. Fisher is again recruited to investigate, despite the obstruction of the latest security head. Of course, she comes out of it in the end. And what's with that good-looking captain? Recommended.
I miss traveling-Thank you, Covid! - and I just love good, and humorous mysteries! This Steve Higgs series is fulfilling both needs. Patricia Fisher is so human, bright and is becoming a whole person. I'm in for total series. I hope Mr. Higgs' other subjects/lead characters are atleast parallel!
This is book 3 of Patricia Fisher Mystery in which she continues to reside in the finest suites on the ship with her own Butler/bodyguard as stumbles around solving crimes with her friend and personal trainer, Barbie. Lots of good food, laughs, friendship and growth.
I’m halfway through this first series of the Patricia Fisher books and it’s a joy to see our heroine transform from downtrodden housewife to an increasingly confident woman (though she’s not quite there yet). Thrills, humour and a touch of glamour. I can’t wait to see more of her story unfold.
Patricia's friend Barbie is performing in a movie being made on the ship, and the main actor is killed. Then threats are happening to Barbie. Who killed the actor and who's threatening Barbie. Join Patricia Fisher and her butler Jermaine and fitness guru Barbie solve this adventure on this Cruise ship sailing for Hawaii.
