The hunt no longer satisfied them. They wanted more.
Nikolas has sheathed his claws. After centuries of hunting and exterminating his own people—wolf shifters cursed with Madness—all he wants is oblivion. Fortunately, a relentless huntress has targeted him, and he gladly welcomes his end by her hand.
In truth, death has never looked so lovely.
Oliviana wants her revenge, yet immortal beings who know her deadly secret have waylaid her hunt. Forced to follow Nikolas into dangerous territory, she hears whispers about an end to Madness. A ‘too-little-too-late’ cure that hinges on Nikolas being alive and well—and mated.
The gods must find endless amusement in her misery.
As their anger and grief are replaced by understanding and passion, Nikolas and Oliviana are still parted by their duty. Will sacrificing their hearts’ desire be enough to save their people?
Rein is a paranormal fantasy adventure set in the 1700s with action, humor, tender moments, and steamy entanglements. Contains mature themes and is intended for adults only.
Bex loves to read all kinds of romance: science fiction, shifter, fantasy, regency, contemporary...(Seriously, all of it!) Currently she writes SFR and Fantasy/PNR. Her writing style—a mixture of action, humor, tenderness, and heat—features worlds and characters that captivate her readers.
Oliviana feels cursed. A foundling, with hated powers, her father a decade slain, mother long since dead, and the bane of her existence unbelievably hard to kill. Nikolas has spent a decade trying to die. He has done his job to his people but lost a part of his soul every time. When Oliviana comes after him, calling for his death, he has hope again. But, every attempt goes wrong. And, gods, why does each attack feel like it's caressing his soul? Has he finally fallen to the madness plaguing his people?
Spoilers ahead! Cursed Madness, moons spent in cages, an ancient battle, evil and thoughtless deities, an odd set of social castes, riddles, revealed secrets, and so much more lurk. Each sentence is a step in revealing something big, and yet another chance to trip up the readers. I loved Thanemonger. I didn't think it could be topped. I was right. But then, my heart lies equally with sci-fi and fantasy. So, therefore they are equal to me, Thanemonger and Tidefall. When we start with Nikolas, staggering in his despair and drunkenness, Bex starts us with a gut punch. A hilarious one, it turns out. Because this isn't a slow build up. You're dropped right into everything. Nikolas fails his own drunk attempt at death, is snatched by an angry being who tries to kill him as his efforts were fruitless. Then, he's rescued from the Eye, only to be tossed to Oliviana, who has sought his death for a decade now. Only the bumbling of his pack saves him from himself and 2 vengeful females. And then the story is off. Through various countries and wars, his pack chases Madness and Oliviana chases him. Until a prophecy is laid at his feet. He has to go home. Back to the Wolfkind kingdom. Word has spread that the indifferent goddess has become benevolent and will grant True Mates again ending the curse of Madness. He has to go back to make his Call and will be guaranteed an Answer. Unwillingly retired, since Reiners can't Call, upset because Oliviana hasn't shown herself in several weeks, he is sent packing. Why would a goddess attempt to play matchmaker with a man determined to End himself? Worse, when he finds out who his would be mate is. Let the games begin! Because now he has to contend with dandy suitors chasing her, a Mad One loose in the city where Reiners are forbidden, faulty cages, devious deities meddling, trials to compete in, costumes that bare too much of his skin, useless allies, a doomed romance, a vengeful sidekick, and an upper Wolfkind caste determined to give him the boot. Oh, there's a lot more going on, but I can't give away all the surprises! Just make it through the first couple of pages. Bex throws a lot of terminology at you, like in Thanemonger, and once you start wading in it gets easier. As before, some you pick up easy, some you figure out in context, some you just have to go on past because it (hopefully) will be figured out eventually lol. This was a fun read and I was up all night because once I started it I couldn't put it down.
I read the blurb... paranormal fantasy adventure set in the 1700's and knew I had to read this story!
As a lover of all genres.. fantasy rates high up in my featured reads, and this book is an example of a truly fantastic fantasy read. There is a whole lotta original story in this book and let me tell you... this ain't no novella! It's a big meaty beast of a story.
It's a artistically and painstaking developed and created world within the human world, that features all manner of creatures, shifters and gods.
Filled with flashes of action that were fast paced and exciting. The story itself is a wonderful almost mystery that left me questioning every characters actions and made it very hard to put the book down. It's an intriguing read filled with pure blinding flashes of comedy and 'feels' that left a big happy smile on my face and a book hangover in my brain because I just enjoyed it that much 💯🙌🏻♥️
The level of world building that Bex Mclynn goes into is both breathtaking and vivid...this was a book that I literally got my teeth into... i chomped it up and practically swallowed it whole... it had my full attention.
I'm left hoping that there will be more books ( in this series?? ) because there are a number of characters I am dying to know more about!! #NoSpoilers
Bex McLynn is a fabulous writer, and as much as I love her hilarious sci-fi Ladyships series—House Borac will forever be my space fam—I might equally prefer her fantasy writings. Even though Rein isn't overly long (under 400 pages), it packs a lot of punch and world in the space it has. It's a bit confusing at the beginning as you're plunged into the world without explanations, but keep with it: pieces will come throughout the story and finally lock into place about 80% in so you can see the full picture. Rein is full of shifters, gods, monsters, deception, desperation, sacrifice, heart break, and romance.
Very original and well-written story, a page turner right from the start. Amazing main characters with great chemistry and fascinating secondary characters that make this book even more wonderful. The story line is creative and interesting, it has just the right amount of action, suspense and romance and I can't wait for the next book.
it had a historical read vibe to it (1971) this was out of my comfort zone to be honest but once i got used to it, it kept me intrigued. The best parts were obviously Nic & Olive together! The bickering and chemistry was 👌. Past and present and different Povs on on alternating chapters. Overall i enjoyed it! Read this with my kindle unlimited. 🐺
Sublime..rich characters , if you like C.L.Wilsons' fading lands read this
This story has deep layers , every single personality so distinct, from the drunken midwife to the hidden goddess , so easily pictured, like watching a good movie, I will read it again, and again...
This book has great characters and great world building! A solid plot with a twists and reveals that I didn't anticipate. Binge read this in 24 hours, first book I've read in a long time that cost me sleep.
This is a more complex read than I’m used to with less smut than I’m used to but I thoroughly enjoyed it all. At times I felt lost but by the end it all came together and made so much sense. Would definitely recommend if you’re into historical paranormal romance
Utterly superb! I loved this book, the story, the characters, their beautifully rendered world. If you adore Ilona Andrews and Nalini Singh, then you will love this. Enjoy 😊
This book was astonishingly beautiful, creating an epic historical feel. I know it is a paranormal fantasy romance but it read so much like a historical fiction book, with the paranormal wolf-shifter and fantasy elements. I took a while to get into it because there was much world building where we were getting glimpses into the past and present. We were not spoon-fed anything and had to make the connections ourselves. It was challenging in that it wasn't a straightforward fated mates story, the hero and heroine (Nikolas and Oliviana) go on a decade long journey of hunting and being hunted by each other. Their initial chemistry is not passionate love, rather vengeance and remorse. They experience obstacles and constant interventions to draw them apart but they seem to always find a way to each other. The entire book is beautiful weaving elements of shifter PNR, mythical beings, and historical epic fantasy. There's magic and supernatural immortal beings, but at the heart of it all there is a love story that was predestined to create a new world order. I highly recommend it for readers of PNR that want more meat to their easy fast reads.
Wow! Loved this book! Although the story is set in 18th century Europe, it didn't feel like purely historical fiction to me. The author created a world of her own and masterfully fit it into the historical background. To me, the book had the feel of a fantasy romance with adventure and a bit of mystery. If you like Elizabeth Hunter and Grace Draven, I would absolutely recommend you give this book a try. The writing is excellent, some parts are simply brilliant. The characters were what definitely made this story for me. Nikolas is simply wonderful: sometimes devastatingly sad, other times subtly funny, but always strong and handsome—a perfect romantic hero, impossible not to love. I had no problems connecting with Oliviana and understood her perfectly. It was easy to route for them both. The times when they were together were my favourite parts, and I'm not just talking about the intimate scenes. These two are just so good together. A beautifully told story, definitely one of my favourites now.
I've been waiting for a book like this all this year.
This is my third Bex McLynn book and I thought it would be hard to top "Thanemonger" but it certainly wasn't. REIN is full on plot, character development and is brilliant in every way. The secondary characters are as three dimensional as the main and I loved each and every single one of them.
Both Nikolas and Oliviana are powerful on their own right but together they become a force to be reckoned with. I craved for every scene to be about them, their chemistry was undeniable and their love is a palpable as the kindle in my hands.
As in Thanemonger, I am left feeling empty once again, wanting more of these amazing characters and I just can't stop thinking about this book becoming a series because......well, because I wishfully want it to be.

First off I have to say......I savored this story. I usually read so quickly that I sometimes have to go back and see what I missed! This one, was so emotional, complex and really got me involved! It took me two days after work to read it all! Oliviania, probably spelled wrong sorry, and Nikolas have a complicated past. I love how this story is revealed and builds through each page, because honestly this is only my second book by this author. If this is the quality of her writing she's just gotten herself a fan, big time! I loved her cowrite with Honey Phillip's but you never know what each author brings to the story......this one was all her and I loved it. I'm really hoping for more, this could be an epic series......we have questions that still need answers and other people who need to find their Mate. Guess I'll have to stalk her online Amazon profile to see what's coming next!!
Thrilling new story by Bex McLynn! The book begins with some riveting scenes, and the action seldom slows down. The story is complex: bit by bit, it unfolds, revealing truths, motivations, aspirations, giving us an epic tale of love. The H/h are drawn to each other, but she’s seeking revenge, not love. As for our Hero, he’s looking for escape from a job he’s grown to hate. A permanent one. It’s a wonderful ‘slow burn’ love story, but it also challenges us to examine what we ‘know.’ Sometimes we take our world, our beliefs, for granted. Until something happens to make us question it. A superb mystery, a delicious romance, beautifully executed!
Now, to be fair, I am not a fan of romance or paranormal. But! This story is just so well told. The characters are well defined and you see their growth as the plot unfolds. A few well placed twists keep things interesting, but still fit the story. Nothing seems forced, if that makes any sense. The sexy fun times, while there, are not the main focal point here. The characters are. Which I really appreciated. (That's the not liking most romance part of my first sentence) Werewolves are my jam and they are well served with this novel. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
This was an amazing read, with strong characters, a complex storyline, and wonderful worldbuilding. I didn't want it to end!
Nikolas is a strong alpha male who also can laugh at himself, a trait that I absolutely loved. Oliviana is brash, headstrong, can survive on her own, and yet also knows how to compromise. These two characters are absolutely firecrackers on the page, and the slow burn read was a intense slow build that wove strongly through the story. I can't wait to read the next in the series!

This had me on a rollercoaster. Liked the characters, then I disliked them, then I liked them again. Well the Reiner is supposed to hunt Hands & Eyes. She is a Hand with an Eye so complication in their relationship. They don’t get together until the end which I didn’t like but while their story ended, the plot continues in the world building which was interesting if at times frustrating. All in all an enjoyable read but something I’d put on my favorites shelf.
I have to say that this blew me away, it's orginal and complex with equally complex characters, a mystery that is wrapped in a paranormal with a historical twist. As the tale evolves, flash backs to Oliviana's childhood bring understanding and clarification to events and ideas that are happen in the 'present time'. Rein is a well written page turner. Enjoy!
I loved this book though it did start off a bit slow. The characters were well thought out and you really got into their mind set. I cant wait for the next book!!

This story took me on a magical ride I wasn't expecting. It was fun and suspenseful and interesting. It had all kinds of mystical creatures with problems and solutions. It was damned good.
I really enjoyed this book! It was an interesting twist on the shifters trope. The world that was built was pretty cool and nothing like what I have read before.
