Michael John Grist is a British/American author and ruins photographer who lives in London, UK. He writes dark and weird science fiction and fantasy books, such as the fantasy novel Ignifer’s Rise and the SF series The Ruins Sonata.
For 11 years he lived in Tokyo exploring Japan’s modern ruins, such as abandoned theme parks, military bases, and ghost towns, gaining millions of hits on this website with his photographs and stories.
The best of these adventures are now collected in his unique travel book Into the Ruins, which thriller bestseller Barry Eisler calls, “gorgeous, haunting, stunning.”
Now Michael enjoys working out in the gym, watching TV and movies, and of course writing stories and novels. He lives in London with his wife, and works as an academic English lecturer at university.
I started and stopped reading this book so often it was ridiculous..
It started off pretty good, but I wasn’t a big fan of the way it was written. It is basically the story of survivors , every book covering a different person and the same period of time, and their meeting after the plague.
Then the bad guys. 🤮
I originally gave it 3 stars but changed my mind. Surprised I made it through all nine.
I just stumbled upon this series thanks to an ad on my Facebook feed, along with ads for a dozen other cheap post-apocalyptic pulp novels (apparently some algorithm knows my literary taste well).
I'm only about 40 pages in to the first book, and I must say that your use of the first person present tense is really starting to grate on me. It just sounds awkward and stilted. There was a flashback scene that switched to past tense and it was such welcome relief until you switched back to present tense again. Ugh. Here's what I mean: I read on. I'm liking the fast-paced action. I find the dialogue a bit contrived, but I plod along. I see lazy similies: "the glass window shattered like ice". I think, why? It's glass. It just shatters like glass. But still, I read on. I hope it gets better. I'm intrigued. "What caused them to change?" I think to myself. I want to find out. But the incessant use of present tense pecks away at my psyche like a bird pecking at a tree. I stop.
Loved this story. Didn't much care for all the science fiction stuff. Didn't much care for Anna dying. Still yet, this book wouldn't let me go till I finished. In his future books he needs to bring Anna and her boyfriend back. I gave it a 5 star rating because there wasn't a 6 star rating.
If you chose to read any box set you must read this one.
Amo Anna Cerulean what an amazing mix of lead characters to fall for. So atmospheric and characters that I laughed and cried with throughout their journey. Books rarely make me cry. But also laugh out loud moments too. So very well written and lovingly crafted.
You will never look at zombies in quite the same way after reading the Last Mayor of America books 1-9
I would love to know how they are all doing now.
There are a lot of books in this category but this is by far the best I have read yet.
I would highly recommend the LMA box set to anyone who enjoys or wants to delve into the apocalypse genre.
I really enjoyed reading the Last Mayor books . There was intrigue, romance, scientific information and a wicked roller coaster of a story. I laughed and cried, and would do it all again.
This entire series blew my mind! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The character were real and raw and easy to feel for...wether you feel love or pity or hatred. The plots twists and turns and shocks constantly! I've never read a zombie series like this and I've read my fair share of zombie stuff!! 😬😬😬Spoilers!!!!!😬😬😬 Grist creates a universe of real and unspeakable horrors. A world where the rich take what they want at the cost of 7 billion innocent lives. I can see that happening, no question! The main villian, Olan, is rich beyond belief and spends decades preparing the apocalyspe in the form of the T4 virus. He wants nothing more than to be top dog. He believes himself bwtter than everyone and so he creates a virus that wipes our humanity but for his chosen few and those poor souls he plucks from heaven to enslave. Whats more is that it takes 9 books and constant trauma and adventure over 14 years to find this out! Every single book led to this seamlessly but left you guessing and forming your own opinions all the way thru. Absolutely phenomenal!!! Fantastic! Heartbreaking!!! #anna 😭😭😭 Seriously, of you've read this far you should read the series...even though I've already told you what happens. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!?!?!?
I read the whole nine books and still wonder why. I found the original idea exciting...good zombies, but the writing seems a little laboured and longwinded. I was waiting for a good denouement but after the first three books, the writer starts to get lost become far too philosophical. A good zombie book can question why humans need to be saved or why zombies are made, but not 6 books of over grandiose soul searching. The characters became a blur and a little unreal, which is a strange thing to say about a fantasy book, but sometimes you need to with-hold belief and immerse yourself in the characters. Unfortunately this is one set of books that I found somewhat unsympathetic. A good promise at the start, of something different, but soon gets bogged down .
As I have read my way through this 9 book series I have had differing opinions on each books ending , some books I enjoyed and one I didn’t really care about. A couple of these books were slow while others were so fast I could barely keep up. But I have a rule that I try to keep and that is to finish a series because you never know how it is going to end. So if you start this journey be prepared to stick it out to the end and you will enjoy the ride .. don’t give up when it slows down as the author is just taking you up the hill so that you can drop off the next cliff..
You will seldom get a great series like this one. The writing is superb. The plot stays the same throughout the 9 books. This series has it all, Love, suspense, mystery, twist, revolution, you name it and it is in this series. Because of the series you get a real feeling for the characters as the series moves along. It does not get any better than this. Do yourself a favor and give it a try, you will not be sorry. One last thing and that is the ending, but you have to decide that on your own.
I wasn't sure if I liked the last mayor as it didn't seem to make much sense to me. I picked it up again and persevered through the first half of book 1. So glad I did because it picked up and I really wanted to see what happened next with Amo, Lara, Cerulean and Anna. A few shock twists and turns. Different to the usual apocalypse stories. Read the whole series in a week.
I read all 9 books without a break ...we watch the world die .. and the survivors gather together.. we see the power struggle.. and just when everything is at it's worst ... there shines a glimmer of hope 5his was a fantastic story There's survival and love and destruction.. and rebuilding .. and zombies.. demons .. angels ..magic and mad scientists
First book was the best. It was a little gorey and detailed at first but improved and was readable. Storyline somewhat decent and different in the beginning but as progressed into further books story became uninteresting in places and totally impossible and far fetched. It felt rushed and jumbled esp introducing new characters and switching between perspectives. It was full of grammatical errors.
I have never enjoyed a series so much… as a walking Dead Rick Grimes Fan I had not read anything or seen anything to equal apart from this !!! Amazing 9 books of The Last Mayor has changed my mind… this was an epic series and I read all 9 books without a break… what a genius story teller and I am in awe of the authors mind… I take my hat off to you Mr Grist … ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This really shouldn't work but it does an excellent story That kept me interested from page one book one to the last page of book nine well done Mr Grist
Couldn't put the story down, and before I knew it I had read every book! Loved the story line and the characters were outstanding! Thanks again for the story.
Were do I start. I liked the premise of this story. A little different but sounded good and the story did start out good. A little confusing and then it went to hell in a hand basket. But I continued to read because I thought and hoped it would get back on track and get better. It didn't it was a hot mess of dysfunction. I can't believe i read all 9 books. They do NOT get better in the end I would have liked everyone to die and the world blow up. it was that bad. there was no character to root for.
In a instant most of the people turn into zombies and began a journey to the sea. Survivors are few and most suffered a coma just before the incident. The story takes place over a fifteen year period until the reason for the apocalypse is discovered. People have been secreted in bunkers and protected from the reason for the apocalypse by a shield with the intention to restart the world when a cure could be found. It is a long journey culminating in an epic battle between the hero and the bad guy.
I love Zombie books, but this one was kind of a surprise. It didn’t disappoint, but there were so many other stories to it that the Zombies weren’t important except for the beginning and the end. The middle seemed like a series of different connected tales to tie it all together. Most excellent read!!
Well although I learned A LOT about the world And it was most certainly a different outlook on zombies chapter after chapter was basically telling you what each character seen as they traveled ........ alone....... cross country.
