Jason Sterling had a simple life by all accounts. He had worked the same job his entire adult life, he had never married and he had no children. He was used to doing things on his own. His comfortable life was shaken to the core the day he learned of his fathers death. It was a mysterious meeting that set life altering events in motion and the allure of a new life was too great to walk away from. When an Electromagnetic Pulse brings the modern world to its knees, Jason's choice proves to be the right one.
EXCERPT “I’d tell you boy’s good luck but you’re going to need a whole lot more than that. Divine intervention maybe. Stack your magazines deep, keep your powder dry and be ready to fight the devil himself,” It abruptly ended there. “What the hell?” I said looking up at my brother. That's what my father wrote in his journal. It was ominous, sinister, menacing..... All the words that raced through my mind when I read it. No matter which word I chose to use, they all meant the same thing. Something bad was on the horizon.
This one was a bit more violent than book one, I kept wishing we were back at the ranch prepping for the coming apocalypse instead of tromping all over the country trying to figure out who the bad guys were. Still, I really enjoyed the storytelling here.
Braden and family finally makes it to the ranch, and Jason and Jill are now married. There are more secrets uncovered in their father’s journals. And then… who exactly are the Ghost Crew?? That cliffhanger ending was amazing.
Tropes/themes: EMP apocalypse Collapse of modern society Found family Military strategy Badass women Overwhelming odds So many side characters Tiny side romances Cliffhanger ending!
The women characters were surprisingly strong (which you don’t often see from a male author) especially in this genre, I loved that.
I liked the story well enough to try the second book of this series. But alas, the problems with the first book only multiplied, as this author has a serious dislike of having his work edited. And as in the first book, Mr. Liscom feels the need to tell us numerous times about the main character's shower habits and their love of coffee. I do enjoy a sense of realism in my fiction, but any sense of that realism is quickly bashed and discarded from the start. To think anyone at all can just hop in an M1A2 Abrams Tank and not only drive it effectively, but also shoot its main gun accurately just obliterates any sense of realism as a single example. It gets worse, unfortunately. A Google resume of miliary hardware knowledge becomes painfully obvious and I found it nearly impossible to finish this book. On top of that, there was absolutely no editing in any way, shape or form, and the inability to understand the usage of the apostrophe gets so aggravating, I closed this book many times and swore to myself that I would never open it again. As my own example, "They drove Chevys" is not written as "They drove Chevy's" for goodness sakes. I would highly recommend you take an English Lit college level course, Mr. Liscom. You seriously need something to walk you through how to write the English language. I am a glutton for punishment, I suppose, as I did finish this horrible book. There is absolutely no way this literary mess is worth 5 stars, and I seriously question those who awarded it such. One single star is far too generous.
Mistakes: the choppy sentences really drove me nuts. Fix this problem for a better rating. Plot: Not as good as the first book. This was just running from one fight right to another. I really missed the planning and building from the first book. The cartels doing a giant 180 from their normal line of "work" and way of doing things was hard to swallow. Characters: there are some interesting New additions to the story. 4.5/10
FUN READ but in this day the millennial authors just have to make strong female characters with power and males bumbling oafs who blush. Jill the strong female head of security has no idea what security is or how it performs she even gets stabed with her own knife cause she wants to punch out a guy 100 over her weight. Has a flashlight with only a clear lense for night reading. They hide laws rockets when helicopters are approaching even stick a guy in a tower w/o one only a radio? Sne and her counterpart have no clue but insist on being head boss. How many times must they run to security office before they figure that one out. One thing that really ticks me off. He turns insultingly down a offer to sleep with a woman sheriff who disrobed, who saved his life and cared protected him and when embarrassed th next morning not looking him in the eyes. HE ALMOST FELT SORRY FOR HER. Tney had enough weapons to stop an army.. Afghan people stopped two nations with less...They time after time fail in n eir leadership run off cause they want to... Then they're bought off with 200 lbs of coffee beans cause the drug cartel told them they were now nice people..
Might want to invest in an editor. Also do some research into military equipment, weapons, and basic leadership. No way in hell a Major is going to cow down to a civilian. Plus it's Colombia not Columbia! If any of those "veterans" were actually in Iraq or Afghanistan then they would know about Improvised Explosive Devices "IEDs" and would know about explosively formed penetrator (EFP). Those things will cut through a Humvee (not called Hummers). Not to mention who calls military vehicles rigs? In my 10 yrs on active duty in the Army, I never heard 1 of our vehicles called that. I guess the author never heard of Black Hawk Down either! An RPG can take down a Blackhawk. The nonsense of this Ray Judge is just that complete nonsense. Oh and then his dad is some sort of super spook who just happens to go on a jason Bourne vigilante killing spree all over the world! Please.
the first book was excellent and this one is pretty good but i could not give it 5 stars as AI did the first book because i did not like the promotion of queer women. It added nothing to the book but took away. It has nothing to do for an EMP and it only took away from the theme of this book. I think it time to stick with a good story and leave out the depraved life styles of sosme human beings. It is not acceptable by me. I finished book and was SHOCKED at the very last 4 ot 5 words and it sort of made me want to buy the 3rd, but i am reading the sample and as of now-the two books will be enough. It is very interesting to see how this author can continue a story like this and keep the reader enthralled because you never know what is going to happen around the next bend.
As far as I am concerned, this is a very good storyline. I read some of the comments on the first book, the problem with some of the people is that they live in a dream world. They are in the same boat as the nuts in the yellow VW van. Man is a savage, take away the threat of law and some will not need any qualms to do with they want, some good, but the bad ones will be worse. Meet forces with force or die. Sorry about the soapbox but I just had to get it off my chest. As for the story, I found it interesting and fun to read. Loved that plot twists and down right humor in the face of danger. I expected the ending to happen, but not so soon, this should be very interesting. More fun on the way.
This book is part of a multi-book collection that requires you to read the books in order to make sense of them. I have serious doubts I will read more of this series.
This book has poor editing, a few misspelled words, and a character mix-up that makes you stop and think what did I just read. This book turned the series into a soap opera with unbelievable plots and no knowledge of what modern explosives can do to a concrete structure when it undergoes bombardment. It is a shame that this series has become a disappointment.
If you enjoy this genre of reading, this book was a very quick read. Not quite the page turner of the first installment, but still an enjoyable read despite it's problems.
I have enjoyed reading this book and the first of the series as we!!. I look forward to following the story to it's conclusion. Hopefully it ends well. I have an addiction to series stories and have been pleased with beginnings but disappointed with endings. In alot of cases it seems the author has lost interest in the story line and just rushes to get on to something else. Hopefully this series won't succumb to the same ailment. Please, please keep the story lime on point to it's end. The ranch is one of the better, far better stories I have encountered available to kindle.
Enjoyed this Sean, storytelling is a wonderful gift. Not a criticism but the past tense of "drag" is "dragged", not drug which is only used for pharmaceuticals. I only mention it because it distracted me from the great story you were telling. The other major distractor is the use of "sooner rather later", which is only rarely the best word choice, in your case the wording worked. It is wordy and overworked by many authors. Have added you to list of authors I'm following.
I am still enjoying this series. The Legacy Series Book 2 was even better than Book 1. These are not standalone books. If you haven't read Book 1, you should do that first. I am really glad I found this after the series was finished! On to Book 3!
My favorite things about this series is regular people doing impossibly believable things, the fact that the goodness prevails and the focus on building community and the future.
I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone 16ish or older due to mature content.
Good action. Part mystery story. Liscom writes very well. Has a good grasp on tactics. The storyline got a little bit ‘out there’ for the final fight, but still a good yarn.
(Would suggest that Liscom poke his editor, however. “Shown”, where the correct word is ‘shone’ and a couple other word mistakes should have been caught. DID NOT affect my enjoyment of the story, just constructive hint for the author.)
This is still a 5 star book although I felt that there was too many unexplained things going on at the same time. I really enjoyed this book but like I said I felt as if the author tried to do too much and left a lot of stuff up in the air, and the book suffered a lot because of that. Hopefully book 3 makes up for that.
Great follow up to the first book wish I could say that I did not see the ending coming but there where to many clues. It’s not bad matter of fact I’m glad it came together the way it did. Keep writing and I’ll keep reading thank you for the quarantine read.
This book is as good as the 1st. I can’t stop reading once I start. Fantastic story lines with just as much confusion as there is chaos. Recommend it to anyone who enjoys the Jack Ryan or Pike Logan series’. Even the Reacher followers will like the paladin like attitude.
The fighting… the Enemies… the Friends that they encountered… This story starts off very normal but soon everything goes ballistic and the ending is totally insane after Jason and Jill take out their major enemy; Ray Judge… If you liked book 1 you’re going to really like book 2 and the way this ends you will be in a hurry to read book 3!
Great storylines and suspense. Keeps you on the edge I'd your seat wondering what comes next. Action scenes are well thought out. All in all a great read. Can't wait for the next one.
The story lines and people were very lifelike and the plots were very well thought out. I was somewhat surprised by the ending, but it made the read more enjoyable.
I liked it too much to put down..isn't there always a "but"? That "f-bomb".... normally I wouldn't have read much, but once reeled into the story I tried to move past them. Really great - wish you were a Christian writer.
Amazing follow up to the first book. The continued story transitioned so well. The ending stunned me. So, when can we expect the third book?! The Ranch is where I want to be when the SHTF. Volkswagen sound to be the opposite of Deadwood, is love to visit.
A great story and characters that pull you in the action while revealing themselves. Hopefully there will another book coming as there are a couple of questions to be answered.
Yet again Sean Liscom has produced a great well written follow on to book one. I was captivated from the first word, and at the end enjoyed the conclusion but still want more, hopefully a third book is coming.
Very enjoyable story with lots of action and compiling story line. You will not what to put this book down till you finish it. Characters need to be a little more explain about but impossible to figure out as story goes along.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a very entertaining series. Hard to lay either book down to do my chores. Characters were believable as was the action. Physical description s of the ranch were fascinating. I think teens through adults would enjoy this series.
Sure, the plot is a wee bit streamlined when it’s not overly detailed. But, the good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, and the uniforms and gear are cool. Ricky likes!
Wow!! If you are into this type of fiction (survivalist) then you will enjoy this book. I've read the first and now I'm looking to read the third. Mom stop action with some surprises. A big 5 out of 5.
Excellent series captivating 5 stars couldn't put it down.
Excellent series, captivating 5 stars couldn't put it down.Read book 3 first by mistake,Then went back and read 1and 2.All I can say is that I wish there was a book 4.
