Prosper Mérimée
1,245 books168 followersProsper Mérimée was a French dramatist, historian, archaeologist, and short story writer. He is perhaps best known for his novella Carmen, which became the basis of Bizet's opera Carmen.
Mérimée loved mysticism, history, and the unusual, and may have been influenced by Charles Nodier (though he did not appreciate his works), the historical fiction popularised by Sir Walter Scott and the cruelty and psychological drama of Aleksandr Pushkin. Many of his stories are mysteries set in foreign places, Spain and Russia being popular sources of inspiration.
In 1834, Mérimée was appointed to the post of inspector-general of historical monuments. He was a born archaeologist, combining linguistic faculty of a very unusual kind with accurate scholarship, with remarkable historical appreciation, and with a sincere love for the arts of design and construction, in the former of which he had some practical skill. In his official capacity he published numerous reports, some of which, with other similar pieces, have been republished in his works.
He was also responsible for several translations of Pushkin and Gogol, when they weren't known in Europe yet.

Kui ma noor olin, meeldis mulle hirmsasti "Colomba". "Õnnelik" lõpp, kõik need ilusad tõmmud noored mehed, Orlanduccio ja Vincentello. Nüüd mõtlen, et Colomba tegelasena on peamiselt tüütu. Kinnisideeline ja TÜÜTU. Et ilus noor kirglik naine, on lahe, aga et tema huvi on aint "kättemaks, sest meil on selline tava ja ma võtan seda üdini hinge", näitab tema piiratust.
"Carmen" mulle lapsena-nooore naisena ka meeldis, aga kuna sel oli õnnetu lõpp ja ma kogu aeg lugedes ka teadsin, et see tuleb, tekstis aina öeldi ja rõhutati, oli seda raske lugeda. Emotsionaalselt raske. Ja meeldiski oluliselt vähem kui "Colomba".
Nüüd mõtlen, et Carmen tegelasekujuna, iseloomu ja käitumise kokkusobimine, on väga hea. Carmenist ma saan aru, Carmeni suhtumine ellu on mulle mõistetav ja samas on ka patriarhaadi pilk lugu lugedes tunda, "nii lähebki naistel, kes ei alistu". Väga hea lugu.

me da bastante paja terminar este libro y como no es mío bailamo sin culpa💃💃leí nomas el de Carmen así que la reseña debería ir en Carmen pero se me canto el orto escribirla acá. No leí el de Colomba pero dicen que son parecidas Y BO QUIERO VOLVER A LEER ALGO ASI ENCIMA QUE ME CUESTA DEJAR UN LIBRO.

encima yo le trato siempre de buscar la vuelta a la bueno, digo fue una mierda peeero...
bueno, no pasó eso esta vez es una mierda y punto.
Empezó bastante bien pero después el protagonista conoce a un chabon y en vez de ser la historia del protagonista que es lo que cualquier persona con 2 neuronas pensaría, ES LA HISTORIA CONTADA POR EL CHABON QUE CONOCIO EL PROTAGONISTA EN EL PRIMER CAPITULO😐

encima la historia la odie, le reconozco que me engancho un toque al comienzo pero la padecí no me gusto para nada. ni la forma en la que está contada, ni se desarrollan los personajes, ni el lugar, ni siquiera la cultura gitana.
Y LO PEOR
aparte de tener un final de mierda es abierto, y el último capítulo es del escritor HABLANDONOS DE LA LENGUA GITANA QUE NO TIENE NADA QUE VER

Two novellas that show Mérimée was fascinated by the "exotic" customs & lifestyles of other people & places (vendettas of the Corsicans in Colomba & gypsies in Spain in Carmen). Entrancing & tragic, if stereotypical, tales from the 1840s. Recommended for fans of classical literature.

Colomba : 4⭐/5
- Contre toute attente, j’ai beaucoup aimé cette lecture, bien que ce soit une histoire de vengeance sanguinaire et d’amour !
- J’ai beaucoup aimé Colomba, personnage déterminée et prête à tout pour arriver à ses fins, forte, affirmée, et bien loin d’être parfaite, et pourtant toujours cohérente et passionnante à suivre.
- J’ai aussi apprécié le personnge d’Orso, tiraillé entre son identité corse/française, son désir de vengeance/justice, sa sœur/son amoureuse
- J’ai apprécié la relation qui se construit entre Orso et Lydia qui évolue avec douceur, naturel et maladresse, sans épanchement de sentiments interminable ou disputes mélodramatiques.
- L’écriture tout en retenue, le ton, les apartés du narrateur, le rythme ; tout m'a semblé maîtrisé pour créer une intrigue prenante et dynamique avec des thèmes grandement intéressants et une petite touche d'ironie rafraichissante.
Carmen : 2⭐/5
- J’ai beaucoup moins aimé cette nouvelle.
- La romance m’a parue irréelle, basée sur rien d’autre que de la jalousie et des menaces, bref le genre de relation que je honnis.
- Je n’ai pas réussi à saisir le personnage de Carmen qui m'a semblé très caricatural dans le genre femme fatale. En plus, elle fait preuve d'une telle intelligence pour organiser sa contrebande, je ne comprends pas pourquoi elle ne s’en sert pas pour se débarrasser de ce mec toxique.
- En parlant de ce mec toxique, je l'ai trouvé très fade, ses seules motivations d’action étant “l’amour” (ou dirons-nous plutôt le fantasme, la vision possessive et objectivante de Carmen, l’obsession ?) pour une fille qu’il a croisé 2 pauvres fois sans échanger un mot.
- Ensuite, l'introduction de ce récit par le narrateur n’a pour moi aucun réel intérêt, puisque on ne revient jamais ensuite sur lui...
- La fin était la pire option possible selon moi, je n'ai ni compris, ni accroché.
- Enfin, le dernier chapitre “explicatif” sur “la race” des bohémiens, je m’en serais bien passé de part sa longueur, son inutilité, sa lourdeur et son côté carrément problématique.

Men begint aan deze twee novellen meestal vanuit nieuwsgierigheid naar het verhaal van Carmen, omdat men de opera van Bizet goed vindt. Achteraf is het verhaal van de Corsicaanse broer en zus della Rebbia veel interessanter dan het verhaal van Carmen. Colomba is een spannende. goed geschreven, novelle die een verhelderende inkijk geeft op de tradities van het eiland. Wat ik vooral interessant vond was de strijd die Orso met zichzelf moet voeren om te proberen zich te ontworstelen aan de ongeschreven wetten van het eiland waar hij geboren is en na een aantal jaren in het Franse leger weer terugkeert. Ook de romantiek komt nog om de hoek kijken en dat wordt dan weer gekoppeld aan de tradities van een ander, groter, eiland. Carmen viel tegen, Colomba was een verademing om te lezen.

Carmen to dobry materiał na operę, nie wątpię, ale tak mnie to babsko irytowało jak to czytałam, że no niekoniecznie ta forma do mnie przemawia. Drugie opowiadanko całkiem przyjemne, a trzecie to jakiś losowy dodatek, totalnie niepotrzebny

Both of the novels were good. Comfortable for reading. Full of emotions.
