The eyes of the great door found me and looked upon me. And when they did, I was no longer one man. I was, instead, multiplied. There were as many variations of me as the door had eyes. And I was suddenly everywhere, and all at once. Scattered in space and in time. A thousand Johns. A thousand histories. And the eyes read my histories as if my body was made of words. And as they read, the words seemed to shift and change. And I too was changed, no version of me ever gaining permanence. I struggled against the eyes, fighting what they would do. Yet in the end, they triumphed. For when the eyes of the great door blinked, I disappeared.
